Abstract

Patriarchal culture and the domestication of women's roles are still significant issues in the Indonesian context. This article reflects the thoughts of Friedrich Engels and Fatimah Mernissi regarding this issue. Friedrich Engels stated that in a patriarchal society, women are often suppressed and marginalized in all aspects of life, including in terms of work and politics, and this, according to Engels, cannot be separated from the values and norms of the past. Meanwhile, Fatimah Mernissi pointed out that patriarchal culture and the domestication of women's roles occur not only in Western society but also in Muslim societies, including Indonesia. Unlike what Engels said, Mernissi underlined that the true spirit of Islam is the spirit of elevating women. In this article, the authors reflect on Engeks and Mernissi's approach in highlighting the origins of the domestication of women's roles and how the historicity of patriarchal culture and the domestication of women's roles have affected the lives of Indonesian women, both in terms of work, politics and family life. Through the reflections of Friedrich Engels and Fatimah Mernissi, this article provides a deeper understanding of issues of patriarchal culture and the domestication of the role of women through the first origins of human civilization and also in the Indonesian context. The author hopes that this article can contribute to efforts to overcome the marginalization of women and create a more just and equitable society for all Indonesian citizens, especially women

Packed lunch for husbands was a viral thread on Twitter in 2020. The thread containing photos of food and the recipe went viral because of the many responses from netizens regarding packed lunch for husbands related to gender roles. This article questions how gender roles relate to packed lunch for husbands, which netizens disputed in this thread. This research uses descriptive analysis method. By collecting primary data in the form of phrases, words, sentences contained in the @rainydecember thread along with citizen comments. After the data was collected, it was analyzed using Betty Friedan's feminine mystique perspective, then described. The results showed that the owner of the thread was shackled to the mystical feminine who consciously or not helped to spread and perpetuate it by making packed lunch for her husband. The thread then received mixed responses, netizens who widely supported the thread indicated that they were constructed of a patriarchal ideology and considered the ideal woman who was good at taking care of the household as a mystical feminine. As for those who are against these threads, they have the potential to misogyny and build stereotypes on women, especially aimed at the thread owner

Abstract

Family law in some countries regulates guardianship in marriage as a pillar that applies absolutely, that a marriage is considered invalid and can be canceled if it is carried out without a guardian or with an unauthorized guardian. A handful of women activists consider guardianship over women to obstruct the realization of their rights and discriminate against women, including male guardianship over women in this marriage. Long before the issue of guardianship heated up again, the Supreme Court had actually faced cases of parents trying to cancel their child's marriage because it was done with an unauthorized guardian. The court of first instance and appellate level had annulled the marriage, but the Supreme Court at the cassation level actually viewed the marriage as legal according to Islamic law. The author in this article will analyze this decision using the method of explanative analysis and describe it with thematic content. Analysis of this decision leads us to discuss the problem of women marrying themselves off, women representing their marriages and women being guardians of marriage from a gender perspective. This finding shows the dynamics of guardianship law over women in marriage. Based on the principle of al-musāwah, the basic principle in marital guardianship is that men and women are equal; may not distinguish legal provisions between men and women based solely on their gender, except based on benefit.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the contribution of Rohana Kudus in empowering Minangkabau women through her voice and work, both in the fields of religion, education, journalism, economics, social life, politics, and other fields. This study uses the gender deconstruction method, namely nurture. Called nurture because social and cultural factors create gender attributes and form stereotypes of a certain gender in society from generation to generation (culture). The results showed that due to the encouragement and demands to promote Minangkabau women, Rohana Kudus established the "Kerajinan Amai Setia" (KAS) school which teaches various household crafts such as sewing, cooking and so on. In addition, she managed to publish a weekly newspaper for Minangkabau women known as “Soenting Melajoe”. It is because of her struggle that Rohana Kudus can be recorded as the first woman journalist in West Sumatra.

Abstract

Culture is never separated from the practice of power, as well as Tayub performances. Based on these problems, this article attempts to analyze Waranggana Tayub's bodily autonomy in the private and public spheres and describes how Waranggana Tayub uses power over his body. This research uses descriptive phenomenology method. Data obtained from observations, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study were analyzed using the theory of power relations put forward by Michael Foucault. The results of the study show that Waranggana is able to determine his body autonomy privately and publicly as evidenced by Waranggana determining the boundaries of his body that can be seen and not seen by the audience. In the Tayub performance, there is a game of tug-of-war between Waranggana and Penibing which places Waranggana as both object and subject.

Abstract

The historical aspect of the story contributes to the unhealed trauma and strong stereotypes in traditional society about the position of men and the demands placed on them. Puang Matoa Saidi, later called Calabai (in Bugis), is a man with the character of a woman. He was born into a different situation, and grew up under the harsh upbringing of his father (Puang Baso), who considered Saidi's physical condition a disgrace to the family. However, the female character in Saidi's male physique, rejects all treatment from Puang Baso (Saidi's father), that the activities of hoeing, gardening, lifting heavy things, being the head of the family are symbols that should be pinned to a man. By using the Content Analysis Approach-descriptive method. It leads us to understand that there are several main factors that build gender labeling itself, including the development of globalization which focuses on the argument that, labeling of men in the era of globalization has shifted meaning due to technological advances and behavioral changes. Differences in geographical conditions make people's choices very much determined by the conditions in which they live and patriarchal culture contributes more or less to the debate about the position of women before men. And the presence of religious normative interference looks more at aspects of behavior that are based on whether it is prohibited or not.

Abstract

This paper tries to see the relationship between women and the mosque. The mosque, which should be a place that is freely accessible to all Muslims regardless of gender, has so far been dominated by men, both in terms of daily activities (worship) and incidental ones. This paper uses a qualitative method. The data obtained were analyzed and interpreted using the perspective of gender and feminism. As a social space (besides the worship space) the mosque is in fact still gender biased. We can see this from mosque facilities that are less sensitive to the presence of women, for example, the absence of a place for ablution for women, places for women’s prayers that are less representative, and also the structure of mosque management or mosque takmir which is still dominated by men. Of course, this is due to several factors, such as misinterpretation of the role of women, and the lack of gender awareness in mosque management. In fact, we know that besides being a place of worship, mosques are the best space for building social relations, accessing information, and empowering the community.
