Abstract

The study was conducted to examine the farmers’ choice on the technology of the paddy and cattle integration farming and determine factors that affected the integrated adoption. Primary data were collected through personal interview from 198 respondents divided into three categories (‘no integration’, ‘partial integration’, and ‘full integration’) based on the farmer’s utilization of manure and crop residues at Magelang Regency, Central Java Province, Indonesia. Then, the data were analyzed by multinomial logit by using ‘no integration’ as a baseline. The results revealed that 60.6% of farmers had applied ‘full integration’, although most farmers rarely adopt both fermentation and composting technology. In conclusion, formal education, frequency of training, and farming experience were found significant in affecting the integration of paddy and cattle farming practice.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the administration of Lactobacillus plantarum AKK-30 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae B-18 as probiotics in reducing cholesterol of blood, egg, and meat and also the production performance of laying quail (Coturnix coturnix Japonica). A number of 600 birds of the twenty one-day-old quails were distributed in a completely randomized design with 5 treatments and 6 replications (initial BW= 101.35 ± 1.64 g). Treatments were as follows: A = negative control (basal diet without probiotic), B = 1% of L. plantarum AKK-30 (107 cfu/g), C = 1% of S. cerevisiae B-18 (106 cfu/g), D = 1% of a probiotic consortium, E = positive control (commercial probiotic). Parameters observed were blood biochemistry profiles, product quality, and production performance. The results revealed that administration of 1% S. cerevisiae (C) resulted the lowest cholesterol in blood (101.75 mg/dL) and egg (9.44 mg/g) and while administration of 1% L. plantarum(B) increased meat protein and decreased fat content (P<0.05). Level of blood triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were not different among treatments. Probiotic treatments did not affect the growth performance, quail day production (QDP), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and egg uniformity. However, probiotic increased diameter of egg yolk (P<0.05). It was concluded that administration of single probiotic L. plantarum AKK-30 or S. cerevisiae B-18 improves the quality of laying quail products.

Abstract

Ongole Grade cattle is one of local cattle in Indonesia.This study was aimed to analyze the effect of bull age and season on semen quality of Ongole Grade cattles macroscopically (sperm motility, and sperm concentration) and microscopically (semen ejaculate volume) to support the policy and management on improvement of semen production. Data were collected from 533 ejaculates of 10 bulls aged 3, 4, and 5 yr at Singosari National Artificial Insemination Center(SNAIC). The 4-year-old bulls hadhighestsperm motiliy and semen ejaculate volume. The lowest ejaculate volume was reported in Ongole Gradecattlesaged 3 yr. Sperm motility and concentrationweresignificantly higher (P<0.01) in wet season than dry season. In conclusion, the bull age and season should be considered by Singosari National Artificial Insemination Centerwhen collecting the semen, especially on bulls aged 3 yr old and in dry season.

Abstract

Beef cattle fattening is raised by farmers in Central Java, but not yet profit oriented. The aims of this research were to analyze the farmer income of beef cattle fattening farm and its contribution to the total household income and to analyze the influence of production costs and farm size toward beef cattle farm income. Survey was used among 150 beef cattle farmers, while multi stage cluster quota sampling was used as sampling method. Income analysis, paired t test, and multiple linear regression were used for data analysis. Research result showed that the farmer’s income from beef cattle farm is IDR 6,736,824.21 per 6.32 month fattening period on an average farm scale was 2.31 heads (equal to IDR 1,065,953.20/month). While, average income of farm households from non-beef cattle farm was IDR 3,516,080.95/month. The contribution of beef cattle farm to household farmer’s income was 30.32%. Based on the paired t test, beef cattle farm income is significantly different and smaller than the income from non-beef cattle farm. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that variable cost and number of beef cattle had a significant effect on beef cattle farm income, while the fixed cost had no significant effect.

Abstract

The study aimed to evaluate effect of the used rice fermented using Chrysonillia crassa as a functional feed on biochemical and haematological parameters, microbial populations, internal organ weight and performance of broilers. The study used one hundred and fifty unsexed one-day-old chicks with average body weight of 48.30 ± 4.13g. At day 1 to 7, the chicks were given commercial feed.  On day 8 onward, the chickens were randomized distributed to one of three experimental diets of 50 chicks each. The chicks were given formulated diet containing fermented used rice based-functional feed (FF). Drinking water was provided ad libitum. The study used completely randomized design with three experimental diets : T0 (diet without FF), T1 (diet contained 5% FF), and T2 (diet contained 10% FF). The chicken fed the used rice fermented increased in cholesterol, high density lipoprotein status, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, lactic acid bacteria, heart weight. and decreased in mean corpuscular volume, E.coli, jejunum weight, but no affect on body weight gain, feed convertion ratio and feed comsumption. In conclusion that the fermented used rice improved the physiological conditions,intestinal bacterial population and had no detrimental effect on performance of broiler.

Abstract

Present study aimed to determine the effectivenessof dimethylformamide (DMF)as cryoprotective agent (CPA) by determining its optimum concentration inTris Eggyolk (TEY) extender on the quality of post-thaw swamp buffalo semen. Only ejaculates having > 60% sperm motility were divided into eight s tubes. Four tubes were diluted in TEY with 4, 5, 6, 7% of glycerol and four other tubes were diluted in TEY with 4, 5, 6, 7% of DMF. Diluted semen then packed into ministraw (0.25 mL), equilibrated at 4°C for 4 hours and freezed at 8 cm above liquid nitrogen vapour for 10 minutes and then stored at liquid nitrogencontainer. After 24 hours of storage, straws were thawed at 37°C for 30 seconds. The result showed that sperm motility after equilibration tend to be the same at all four glycerol concentrations, whereas the decrease in motility was highest in extenders with a DMF concentration of 7% (P <0.05). Post-thaw sperm motility and recovery rate in TEY extender containing 5% DMF or 7% glycerol were highest (P<0.05) than other glycerol or DMF concentration. Sperm viability and membrane integrity did not differ among TEY containing 6% or 7% glycerol, both  were higher (P<0.05) than 4% or 5% glycerol. Viability and membrane integrity of sperm in 5% DMF was superior (P<0.05) to 4%, 6% or 7%. This research concluded that 5% DMF or 7% glycerol was considered to be the most suitable CPAs for swamp buffalo semen cryopreservation.

Abstract

An experiment was performed to investigate the probiotic effect of Saccharomyces boulardii and Saccharomyces cerevisiae on yield, antioxidant activity, and expression of interleukin-6 gene in Holstein calves. Sixteen calves were divided into 4 dietary treatments with 4 calves/treatment. Experimental treatment diets include 1) control (without probiotic use), 2) milk soluble probiotics based on S. boulardii (1 g/kg), 3) milk soluble probiotics based on S. cerevisiae (1 g/kg) and 4) A mixture of yeast probiotics S. boulardii and S. cerevisiae as a solution in dairy milk (1 g/kg each). The completely randomized design was used in this experiment. The results showed that feeding S. boulardii and S. cerevisiae did not have a significant effect on performance traits compared with control. There was no significant difference between the different treatments for the number of antioxidant enzymes compared to the controls. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the treatments used probiotics were higher than the control. The expression of interleukin-6 gene expression was increased significantly (P<0.05) for treatments 3 and 4 on Days 10, 30 and 60 compared to the control. In conclusion, addition of probiotics did not alter performance traits of antioxidant activity, but the S. cerevisaetreatment did increase interleukin-6 gene expression which suggests an effect on the immune system.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to characterize spermatozoa motility of sexed semen (X and Y) using albumin by diluents and antioxidant treatments. The material used in this study was fresh semen of Ongole Crossbreed (OC) bull with progressive motility >70%. The sperm sexing methodology used albumin gradient of 5%, 10%, and 15%. The diluents used were CEP-2 and andromed with or without the addition of 1mM Glutathione as an antioxidant. The sexed semen was made into liquid semen and stored at 3-5°C. The motility was observed at day 0 (H0) and day 5 (H5). Motility was analyzed using SCA v.2.1. The parameters measured were total motility, progressive motility, VCL, VSL, VAP, LIN, STR, WOB, ALH, BCF and sperm hyperactive. The experimental applied was the factorial pattern 2 x 2. The first factor was the type of diluents (CEP-2 and Andromed), and the second factor was additional glutathione (with or without). Data was analyzed by general linear model of SPSS-IBM 24 program. Sexed semen with CEP-2 diluents showed better motility of spermatozoa than andromed in the upper layers (spermatozoa X) and lower layers (spermatozoa Y). The CEP-2 diluent had a big role to maintain motility, progressive motility and velocity spermatozoa during cold storage. The addition of Glutathione 1mM could support the motility of sexed spermatozoa at cold storage, especially for LIN, STR, and WOB values.
