Abstract

This research study aims at describing: the forms of the violation of cooperative maxims; the violation of politeness maxims used in Archie speech situation, and the way to understand maxim violations that makes the reading of the comic easier. This study used two data collection methods, namely reading comprehension and note-taking. The result of this study reveals that there is a violation of maxims both co-operative and politeness maxims. The forms of the violation of co-operative maxims are quantity, quality, relevance, and manner. The forms of the violation of politeness maxims are tact, approbation, modesty, agreement, and sympathy. The easier way to understand comics is reading verbal and nonverbal forms.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of the learning facilities, instructional activities, and teacher assessments on students’ English achievement of SMPs/MTs in Ende. This research was ex-post facto, involving three independent variables and one dependent variable. This research was conducted at 10 SMP/MTs in Ende. The population of this study was eight graders of the schools i.e., 1146 students. The sample consisted of 278 students which established by using proportional random sampling technique. The research instruments were three questionnaires and tests. The data were analyzed by using partial correlations and multiple regressions. The result showed that r1(2,3) = -0.026, sig 0.670), r2(1,3) = -0.050, sig 0.41), r3(1,2) = 0.322, sig 0.000) and R1,2,3 = 0.425, sig 0.000.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh: (1) motivasi; (2) keyakinan diri; (3) persepsi siswa terhadap apresiasi karya sastra siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian survey yang mengandung tiga variabel bebas dan satu variabel terikat. Populasi penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa SMP di Kabupaten Lombok Timur. Sampel sejumlah 383 siswa ditentukan menggunakan teknik proportional stratified sampling. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan angket motivasi, keyakinan diri, persepsi siswa, dan apresiasi karya sastra. Analisis data menggunakan statistik deskriptif dan analisis regresi ganda. Hasil penelitian ini ada empat. Pertama, motivasi berpengaruh terhadap apresiasi karya sastra. Kedua, keyakinan diri berpengaruh terhadap apresiasi karya sastra. Ketiga, persepsi siswa berpengaruh terhadap apresiasi karya sastra, dan Keempat, motivasi, keyakinan diri, dan persepsi siswa berpengaruh secara bersama-sama terhadap apresiasi karya sastra.Kata Kunci: motivasi, keyakinan diri, persepsi, dan apresiasi karya sastra  The effect of motivation, self-efficacy, and perception on the literature appreciation of the students of junior high schools AbstractThis study aims to determine the effect of: (1) students’ motivation; (2) students’ self-efficacy; (3) students’ perception on the literature appreciation of the students of junior high schools in Kabupaten Lombok Timur. This study used the quantitative approach. This research was a survey containing three independent variables and one dependent variable. The population was all students of junior high schools in Kabupaten Lombok Timur. A sample of 383 students was established using proportional stratified sampling technique. The data were collected using the motivation questionnaire, self-efficacy questionnaire, students’ perception questionnaire, and students’ literature appreciation questionnaire. To determine the effect, the researchers used descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. The results of this study are as follows. First, motivation affects students’ literature appreciation. Second, the self-efficacy affects students’ literature appreciation. Third, the perception affects students’ literature appreciation. Fourth, motivation, self-efficacy, and perceptions simultaneously affect students’ literature appreciation.Keywords: motivation, self-efficacy, perception, students literature appreciation

Abstract

This study aimed to develop appropriate English learning materials for nursing students of Borneo University of Tarakan in learning English. This study was a Research and Development (R D) study. The steps of the study were conducting needs analysis, writing the course grid, developing the materials, getting validation and revising the materials, trying out the materials, evaluating the materials, and writing the final draft of the materials. In this study, the data were collected by using needs analysis questionnaire, materials evaluation questionnaire and an interview guideline.  Four units were developed in this study. Each unit consisted of 12 until 15 tasks that were organized into Lead-in, Lesson Proper, Homework, Evaluation, Reflection and Word Bank. The data analysis showed that the developed materials were appropriate. The range of the mean value was 3.12 to 3.64. Referring to the quantitative data conversion, the range was in the good category. The data also suggested that the appropriate learning materials for nursing students had some components: goals, input, procedures, setting, teacher roles and learners roles.

Abstract

This research aims to: (1) identify and describe speech acts in the film of Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted that suit to the language functions in KTSP and 2013 Curriculum for junior high school and (2) explain ways to apply the speech acts in ELT. This study employed the qualitative approach. The research object consisted of the utterances in the film. The data were collected through an observation and they were classified based on the speech act classification. The research findings reveal that there are many speech acts functions in the film suiting to the language functions in the curriculums. Directive speech act includes commanding and ordering, requesting, inviting, suggesting, prohibiting, and begging. Expressive speech act includes parting, thanking, congratulating, liking and disliking, greeting, apologizing, complimenting and admiring, agreeing and disagreeing, doubting, and refusing. Representative speech act includes convincing, informing, and giving fact or opinion. Commissive speech act includes promising and offering. The application of the speech acts functions in ELT is done by making use of the utterances to express the language functions in the curriculums.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata siswa kelas VII B SMP Negeri 2 Labuhan Badas melalui teknik permainan. Penelitian ini terdiri dari tiga siklus dengan alur: penentuan masalah, perencanaan, tindakan dan observasi, dan refleksi. Data dikumpulkan melalui hasil tes kosakata, catatan lapangan, wawancara, dan foto. Data yang berupa nilai kosakata siswa dianalisis menggunakan program Excel. Data berupa catatan lapangan, wawancara dan foto dianalisis melalui tiga tahapan yakni: reduksi data, beberan (display) data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penguasaan kosakata siswa meningkat melalui teknik permainan. Siswa mampu mengetahui arti, bentuk dan penggunaan kata, serta termotivasi dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris. Penyusunan materi kosakata membuat siswa lebih mudah mempelajari kosakata. Pembagian LKS dapat membantu memfasilitasi pembelajaran kosakata siswa. Kegiatan yang bervariasi membuat pembelajaran bahasa Inggris menjadi lebih menyenangkan. Peningkatan interaksi dan penggunaan bahasa Inggris di kelas mampu meningkatkan kemampuan siswa menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Pengelolaan kelas secara optimal membuat proses pembelajaran berlangsung dengan baik.Kata Kunci: kosakata, permainan IMPROVING THE VOCABULARY MASTERY OF THE VII B CLASS OF SMP THROUGH GAMES AbstractThe aim of this study was to improve the vocabulary mastery of the VII B class of SMP Negeri 2 labuhan Badas through games. This study was conducted in three cycles following the steps: problem identification, planning, action and observation, and reflection. The data were collected through the students’ vocabulary test score, field notes, interviews, and photos. The data of students’ vocabulary score were analyzed using the Excel program. The field notes, interviews and photos were analyzed through three stages namely: data reduction, display data, and conclusion drawing. The results show that students' vocabulary improves through game techniques. The students are able to know the meaning, the form, the use of  the words, and are motivated to learn English. The organization of the vocabulary material makes the students more easily learn the vocabulary. The worksheets could help facilitate the students' vocabulary learning. Various activities make English learning more fun. The interaction improvement and use of English in the classroom are able to improve the students’ ability in using English. The optimalization of classroom management could make the learning process runs well.Keywords: vocabulary, games

Abstract

Penelitian ini  bertujuan untuk menganalisis penerjemahan aspek budaya dalam Para Priyayi ke Ein Hauch von Macht, serta ideologi dan teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian ini adalah satuan lingual yang mengandung unsur budaya. Dari hasil penelitian didapatkan 457 data yang diklasifikasikan dalam sembilan aspek budaya yaitu aspek material (122 data), agama (51 data), kekerabatan (109 data), ekonomi (28 data), gestur dan kebiasaan (61 data), estetik dan rekreasi (39 data), politik (28 data), ekologi (14 data), dan pendidikan (4 data). Ideologi yang digunakan adalah foreignisation dan domestication yang digunakan bersama-sama, sehingga TSa memiliki tingkat keterbacaan yang tinggi dan pembaca TSa dapat memahami makna teks serta mendapatkan pengalaman yang sama dengan pembaca TSu.Teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan adalah teknik borrowing (116 data), calque (1 data), literal (199 data) modulasi (3 data), ekuivalensi (7 data), adaptasi (4 data), deskripsi (36 data), reduksi (16 data), dan couplets (74 data). The translation of cultural aspects in Para Priyayi into ein Hauch von Macht AbstractThe aims of this study are to analyze the cultural aspects in Para Priyayi and its translation Ein Hauch von Macht, the ideologies of translation and the translation techniques used to translate the texts. This research was descriptive qualitative. The data were linguistic units containing cultural elements. There are 457 data found in this research, and they are classified into nine cultural aspects, namely material (122 data), religion (51 data), kinship (109 data), economy (28 data), gesture and custom (61 data), aesthetic dan recreation (39 data), politics (28 data), ecology (14 data), and education (4 data).The ideologies used are foreignization and domestication which were used simultaneously, so the TT has a high readability that readers can understand the meaning and get the same experience as the ST readers. The translation techniques used are borrowing (116 data), calque (1 data), literal (199 data), transposition (1 data), modulation (3 data), equivalency (7 data), adaptation (4 data), description (36 data), reduction (16 data), and couplets (74 data).

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan, menglasifikasi, dan mendeskripsikan, kesalahan kebahasaan pada surat dinas yang ditulis oleh peserta didik kelas VIII SMP Negeri 1 Kedawung Kabupaten Sragen tahun pelajaran 2013/2014. Kesalahan  meliputi (1) kesalahan penggunaan ejaan, (2) kesalahan penggunaan diksi, dan (3) kesalahan penggunaan kalimat.    Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah naskah surat dinas yang ditulis oleh peserta didik kelas VIII SMP Negeri 1 Kedawung Kabupaten Sragen tahun pelajaran 2013/2014, sebanyak 128 surat. Teknik untuk pengumpulan data menggunakan metode dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data dengan cara dibaca, diidentifikasi, digarisbawahi, dan dikelompokkan. Hasil penelitian adalah sebagai berikut: kesalahan penggunaan ejaan ada 751 yang yang meliputi kesalahan penulisan huruf ada 174, kesalahan penulisan  kata ada 417, dan kesalahan penulisan tanda baca ada 60. Kesalahan penggunaan diksi ada 33 yang meliputi ketidakbakuan diksi ada 3, ketidakkonsistenan diksi ada 11, ketidaktepatan diksi ada 12, dan kemubaziran diksi ada 7. Kesalahan penggunaan ada 20 terdiri atas: pemakaian kata penghubung ada 4, kekurangan unsur dalam kalimat ada 13, dan ketidaklogisan kalimat ada 3. An analysis of language errors in official letters by grade VIII of SMP 1 Kedawung, Sragen in the academic of 2013/2014 AbstractThis study aims to find out, classify, and describe, language errors in official letters written by Grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 Kedawung, Sragen Regency, in the academic year of 2013/2014. The errors are (1) those in spelling use, (2) those in diction use, and (3) those in sentence use. This was qualitative descriptive study. The research subjects were official letters written by Grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 Kedawung, Sragen Regency, in the academic year of 2013/2014, with a total of 128 letters. The data were collected by means of the documentation method. The data analysis techniques were reading identifying, underlining, and grouping. Based on the result of the study, the following conclusions are drawn. First, the spelling errors in official letters by Grade VIII  students of SMP Negeri 1 Kedawung, Sragen Regency, in the academic year of 2013/2014 are as many as 751. There is 33 error in diction use, consisting of 3 error in the non-standard use of diction, 11 errors in the diction use inconsistency, 72 errors in the use diction use inaccuracy, and 7 errors in the redundancy. There are 20 errors in sentence use, consisting of 4 errors in conjunction use, 13 error in sentences with missing words, and  3 errors in illogical sentences.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan dan menjelaskan wujud kesantunan imperatif dalam interaksi dan mendeskripsikan makna kalimat imperatif yang digunakan dalam interaksi santri putra Madrasah Aliyah kelas X Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. Objek penelitian ini adalah kalimat imperatif lisan dalam bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Jawa yang di dalamnya terkandung makna atau maksud pragmatik imperatif yang dituturkan oleh para guru, siswa dan pembina asrama pada waktu proses kegiatan/aktivitas. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode simak dan cakap, teknik yang digunakan adalah simak libat cakap. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah  human instrument yaitu peneliti dilengkapi dengan alat rekam dan kartu data. Analisis data dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode kontekstual, yaitu cara analisis yang diterapkan pada data dengan mengaitkan konteks ujaran. Hasil penelitian ini diketahui bahwa delapan jenis makna imperatif pragmatik interaksi santri putra Madrasah Aliyah kelas X Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta dilihat dari tingkat ilmu, bisa dikelompokkan menjadi (1) imperatif pragmatik yang mengandung makna dasar “perintah“, yaitu makna desakan, bujukan, larangan, perintah, dan “ngelulu”, (2) imperatif pragmatik yang mengandung makna dasar “permintaan“, yaitu makna permintaan, dan (3) imperatif pragmatik yang mengandung makna dasar “nasehat “, yaitu makna himbauan dan persilaan. Imperative Politeness in Inter-Male Student Interaction of Class X Madrasah Aliyah Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta AbstractThis research has two purposes. First, to describe and explain the forms of imperative politeness in inter-male student interaction of Class X Madrasah Aliyah of Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. Second, to describe imperative sentences used in inter-male student interaction of Class X Madrasah Aliyah of Mu’alliminMuhammadiyah Yogyakarta. The object of this study includes all verbal utterances in Bahasa Indonesia which contain imperative pragmatic meanings or intentions uttered by the teachers, students, and dormitory managers of Madrasah Aliyah class X of Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta during the process of activities. The data of this research comprise verbal utterances used by teachers, students, and dormitory managers of Madrasah Aliyah class X of Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta which contain imperative pragmatic meanings or intentions in Bahasa Indonesia and Javanese. This study uses the observation and interviewing method, with observation, involvement, and interviewing technique. Human instrument used in this study was supported by recording device and data card. Data analysis was conducted using contextual method, which is applied to the data by basing on, taking into account, and associating with contexts. The results of the research show that eight types of pragmatic imperative meanings in the inter-male student interaction of Madrasah Aliyah class X of Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta as seen from educational and institutional levels can be categorized into (1) pragmatic imperative containing the basic meaning of “order”, i.e. insistence, persuasion, prohibition, order, and sarcasm (Javanese: ngelulu); (2) pragmatic imperative containing the basic meaning of “request”, i.e. request; and (3) pragmatic imperative containing the basic meaning of “advice”, i.e. urge and invitation.
