Abstract

This research was aimed at developing English writing instructional materials that are appropriate for second-year students of English Department at Champasak University. This research was a Research and Development study using model proposed by Jolly and Bolitho (1998). The subjects of this research were 30 learners who are students of English Department at Champasak University. Data were collected using questionnaires and interviews. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of needs analysis showed that students need to learn about (1) writing process, (2) students need to know and learn more about types of text, (3) students need to learn more about types of letter and (4) students need to learn about the cultures around them. The findings revealed that the English writing instructional materials in terms of aims and approaches, design and organization, language contents, skills, topics, methodology and practical consideration were appropriate for second-year students of English Department.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan menemukan bentuk interferensi sintaksis yang terdapat pada prosiding International Conference on Banking, Accounting, Management, and Economics (ICOBAME) 2018. Peneli-tian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif. Desain yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah desain penelitian kualitatif dan jenis penelitian analisis isi. Terdapat 13 bentuk interferensi sintaksis yang terjadi dalam objek penelitian yang terdiri dari 8 bentuk interferensi dalam tataran frasa, 4 bentuk interferensi dalam tataran klausa, dan 7 bentuk interferensi dalam tataran kalimat. Wujud perbedaan paling mendasar antara bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris, yaitu kaidah DM-MD, terealisasi dalam objek penelitian. Ditemukan data yang menunjukkan interferensi kaidah DM terhadap perwujudan yang seharusnya MD. Selain itu perbedaan tata bahasa yang lain yang terwujud dalam objek penelitian adalah bentuk-bentuk interferensi yang disebabkan oleh ketidaktepatan penggunaan preposisi, ketidaktepatan penggunaan definitive word, ketidaktepatan pemilihan kata dan kelas kata, ketidaktepatan penggunaan kata ‘no’ dan ‘not’, ketidaktepatan subject-verb agreement, ketidaktepatan penggunaan v-ing, ketidaktepatan bentuk paralelisasi, serta ketidaktepatan bentuk kata yang dipengaruhi kala dan penjamakan. Indonesian syntaxis interference of the ICOBAME 2018 Proceeding abstracts AbstractThis research was conducted with the aim of finding the syntaxis interference in the proceeding of the International Conference on Banking, Accounting, Management, and Economics (ICOBAME) 2018. This research was descriptive research. The design employed in this study was qualitative research design specifically content analysis. There were 13 syntaxis interference forms occur in the object of research consisting of 8 forms in phrasal level, 4 forms in clause level, and 7 forms in sentence level. The fundamental difference between Indonesian and English, that is the DM-MD rules, was barely anticipated. Other grammatical differences manifested in the research object were syntaxis interference caused by the inaccurate use of prepositions, inaccurate use of definitive words, inaccurate choice of words and class of words, inaccurate use of 'no' and 'not', inaccurate use of the subject-verb agreement, inaccurate use of v-ing, inaccurate forms of parallelization, and inaccurate use of word choice depending on the tense and pluralization.

Abstract

This article examines the development of an English textbook prototype for vocational high school (VHS) students of the Hotel Accommodation study program. Employing a research and development study design involving several steps of procedure: needs analysis, product development, product validation, product revision, product tryout, and final product development. The results of this research were there units of learning material, in which the content of materials and the topics mostly made related to the hotel fields by covering relevant daily activities and current issues and including various types of activities that cover the four English skills. According to the results of the field-testing, the units designed were eligible to be applied in the instructional process as indicated by the mean scores of the students’ agreement ranging from 4.2 to 5 on 5 to 1 Likert scale. This textbook prototype offers an insight to what English learning materials for Hotel Accommodation Study Program is supposed to be. Thus, it is an alternative model of learning material for teaching English for VHS.

Abstract

This study aims to find out (1) the effectiveness difference between the use of multiple intelligence activities and the conventional activities in listening comprehension, and in the students’ interest in learning English. This study used the quantitative method. The study design was quasi- experimental with the pre-test and the post-test group design. The experimental class used 5 categories of multiple intelligences namely; linguistic intelligence, logical/mathematical intelligence, visual intelligence, musical intelligence, and naturalist intelligence. This study used a listening comprehension test and a questionnaire as the research instruments for collecting the data. The technique of the data analysis in this study was MANOVA. The result shows that: (1) the use of multiple intelligence in listening comprehension is more effective than the conventional activities with sig 0.000; (2) the use of multiple intelligence activities in students’ interest in learning English is more effective than the conventional activities with sig 0.000.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk  mendeskripsikan (1) bentuk-bentuk interferensi morfologi bahasa Jawa dalam bahasa Indonesia, (2) bentuk-bentuk interferensi sintaksis bahasa Jawa dalam bahasa Indonesia, dan (3) faktor penyebab terjadinya interferensi morfologi dan sintaksis bahasa Jawa dalam bahasa Indonesia pada hasil karangan menulis laporan. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Subjek penelitian adalah hasil karangan pada pembelajaran menulis laporan berbahasa Indonesia Objek yang diteliti adalah bentuk-bentuk interferensi morfologi dan sintaksis bahasa Jawa dalam bahasa Indonesia beserta faktor-faktor penyebabnya. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik baca dan catat serta pengisian angket. Data dianalisis menggunakan metode padan intralingual dengan teknik Hubung Banding Membedakan. Keabsahan data diperoleh melalui ketekunan pengamatan dan pemeriksaan sejawat. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan bentuk-bentuk interferensi morfologi bahasa Jawa dalam bahasa Indonesia meliputi proses morfologis dan morfofonemis. Interferensi proses morfologis meliputi afiksasi dan reduplikasi. Interferensi proses morfofonemis berupa peluluhan fonem pada awal kata berprefiks {N-}.Interferensi sintaksis meliputi pola konstruksi frasa, penggunaan preposisi, konjungsi, dan partikel. Faktor penyebab terjadinya interferensi morfo-logi dan sintaksis bahasa Jawa dalam bahasa Indonesia adalah faktor linguistik meliputi penguasaan B1, rendahnya penguasaan B2 dan faktor kedwibahasaan. Faktor nonlinguistik meliputi kebiasaan, lingkungan, sikap bahasa, motivasi, guru, dan evaluasi pembelajaran.Kata Kunci: interferensi, morfologi, sintaksis, dan faktor penyebab The grammatical interference of Javanese language in Indonesian essay of junior secondary school students’ AbstractThis research was aimed to describe (1) Javanese morphological interference forms in Indone-sian language, (2) Javanese syntactic interference forms in Indonesian language, and (3) the factors cousing Javanese morphological and syntactic interference in Indonesian essay. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The subject of this research were the essay as learning outcomes. The objects of this research were Javanese morphological and syntactic interference forms in Indonesian language and the factors that cause the morphological and syntactic interference. The data were collected by reading and writing techniques and questionnaires. The data were analyzed using the unified intralingual method with Connecting Appeal Differentiating techniques. The validity of the data obtained from a continous observation and peer review. The results of this research find the mor-phological and syntactical interference. The morphological interference includes morphologies and morphophonemic processes. The morphologies interference process includes affixation and reduplica-tion. The morphophonemic interference process was the result of phoneme at the beginning of the word with prefix {N-}. The syntactical interference includes the pattern of phrase constructions, the use of prepositions, conjunctions, and particles. The causes of Javanese morphological and syntactic interference in Indonesian language are linguistic factors including the mastery of L1, low mastery of L2, and bilingualism factors. Nonlinguistic factors include habits, environments, language attitudes, motivations, teachers, and learning evaluations.Keywords: interference, morphological, syntactic, and causes factors

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengidentifikasi perbedaan keefektifan antara penggunaan: (1) strategi REAP dengan strategi tradisional, (2) strategi Request dengan strategi tradisional, dan (3) strategi REAP dengan strategi Request dalam pembelajaran membaca pemahaman siswa Kelas VIII SMP Negeri 2 Herlang. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuasi-eksperimen. Desain eksperimen yang digunakan adalah Randomized Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. Populasi penelitian adalah seluruh siswa kelas VIII SMP Negeri 2 Herlang. Sampel penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII.2, VIII.3, dan VIII.4 yang ditetapkan dengan menggunakan teknik simple random sampling. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan Anava dilanjutkan uji Scheffe. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan keefektifan dalam pembelajaran dengan strategi REAP, strategi Request, dan tradisional dengan F = 43,315 dan sig.(p)= 0,000 0,05. Hasil analisis uji Scheffe secara rinci menunjukan bahwa (1) strategi REAP lebih efektif dibandingkan dengan strategi tradisional, (2) strategi Request lebih efektif dibandingkan dengan strategi tradisional, dan (3) strategi REAP lebih efektif dibandingkan dengan strategi Request dalam pembelajaran membaca pemahaman dengan mean difference sebesar 4,96875 dan sig.(p)= 0,031 0,05. Berdasarkan uraian tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa strategi REAP merupakan strategi yang paling efektif dibandingkan dengan strategi Request dan strategi tradisional dalam pembelajaran membaca pemahaman.Kata Kunci: keefektifan, strategi REAP, strategi Request, membaca pemahaman The effectiveness of REAP and request strategies in the teaching of reading comprehension to grade VIII students of SMPAbstractThe purposes of this study are to determine the effectiveness difference: (1) between the REAP strategy and traditional strategy, (2) between the Request strategy and traditional strategy, and (3) in the use of the REAP strategy and Request strategy in the teaching of reading comprehension to grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 2 Herlang. The research was quasi-experimental. The experimental design used was a randomized pretest-posttest control group design. The population was all of the grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 2 Herlang. The sample was students of class VIII.2, VIII.3, and VIII.4 established using the simple random sampling technique. The data were analyzed using the formula of Anava followed by Scheffe test. The result of the research shows that there are differences in teaching effectiveness using the REAP strategy, Request strategy, and traditional strategy with F = 43,315 and sig.(p)= 0,000 ≤ 0,05. The results of the analysis using the Scheffe test show that (1) the REAP strategy is more effective than traditional strategy, (2) the Request strategy is more effective than traditional strategy, (3) the REAP strategy is more effective than Request strategy in teaching reading comprehension, with the mean difference of 4,968 and sig.(p)= 0,031 0,05. Based on the above description, it can be concluded that the REAP strategy is the most effective strategy of the three strategies under study in teaching reading comprehension.Keywords: effectiveness, REAP strategy, Request strategy, reading comprehension

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menghasilkan sebuah produk berupa multimedia interakif pembelajaran bahasa Inggris materi Expressions pada siswa kelas VIII SMP Ali Maksum Yogyakarta dan mengetahui keefektifan produk multimedia interaktif dalam pembelajaran. Penelitian dan pengembangan (research and development) merupakan jenis penelitian yang berorientasi pada produk. Model yang digunakan oleh peneliti dalam pengembangan ini adalah model pengembangan Borg dan Gall. Model ini memiliki 10 tahapan pengembangan. Kesepuluh tahap tersebut sebagai berikut. (1) research and information collecting. (2) Planning. (3) developing preliminary form of product. (4) Preliminary field testing. (5) Main product revision. (6) main field testing. (7) operational product revision. (8) operational field testing. (9) final product revision. Hasil Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penilaian siswa serta peningkatan pemahaman materi expressions pada siswa maka multimedia interaktif ini layak dan sesuai digunakan dalam pembelajaran di kelas. Validasi materi mendapat skor 4,2 dengan kategori baik, validasi media mendapat skor 4,4 dengan kategori sangat baik. Terdapat perbedaan hasil belajar yang signifikan antara yang menggunakan multimedia interaktif dengan yang tidak menggunakan multimedia interaktif. Developing English material “expressions” junior highschool students AbstractThis research aims to produce a product in the form of interactive multimedia English learning material “Expressions” in eighth grade students of Ali Maksum Middle School Yogyakarta. Research and development (research and development) is a type of product-oriented research. The model used by researchers in this development was the Borg and Gall development model. This model has 10 stages of development. The ten stages are as follows. (1) Research and information collecting). (2) Planning. (3) Developing preliminary form of product. (4) Preliminary field testing. (5) Main product revision. (6) Main field testing. (7) operational product revision. (8) Operational field testing. (9) Final product revision. (10) Dissemination and application (desimination and implementation). The subjects of the trials were students of class VIII Ali Maksum Yogyakarta Yogyakarta.The results of the study showed that student assessments and understanding of expressions material were increased. Furthermore, this interactive multimedia is feasible and suitable for use in classroom learning

Abstract

This research aims at finding out the influence of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTSs), vocabulary mastery and reading motivation on reading comprehension achievement among State SMP Students in Magelang Regency. This research was an ex post facto design. The sampling technique was the proportional cluster random sampling. The research instruments were tests and a questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the multiple regression analysis continued by the partial correlation. The result of the multiple regressions indicates that HOTSs, vocabulary mastery and reading motivation influence reading comprehension achievement with the F=236.709 which means that significantly on reading comprehension achievement. The contribution of HOTSs on reading comprehension achievement is 38.7%, vocabulary mastery is 50.3%, and reading motivation is 8.2%.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan wujud kalimat tidak efektif dalam karangan siswa yang meliputi ketidaktepatan struktur, ketidaktepatan diksi, ketidakhematan kalimat, ketidaktepatan penggunaan ejaan, serta mengetahui faktor-faktor penyebab siswa melakukan kesalahan dalam menyusun kalimat efektif. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah karangan siswa hasil pembelajaran menulis petunjuk di kelas VIII SMP 3 Kedungwuni Kabupaten Pekalongan. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik baca dan catat, angket, dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian ini adalah sebagai berikut: (1) wujud kalimat tidak efektif karena ketidaktepatan struktur meliputi subjek yang tidak dieksplisitkan sebanyak 39, objek yang tidak dieksplisitkan 35, unsur kalimat yang tidak lengkap 28, dan susunan kalimat yang tidak cermat 5; (2) wujud kalimat tidak efektif karena ketidaktepatan diksi meliputi diksi yang tidak cermat sebanyak 52 dan diksi yang tidak baku 17; (3) wujud kalimat tidak efektif karena ketidakhematan kalimat meliputi penggunaan unsur yang tidak perlu sebanyak 62, pengulangan unsur yang tidak perlu 18, dan penguraian yang tidak perlu 19; (4) wujud kalimat tidak efektif karena ketidaktepatan penggunaan ejaan meliputi ketidaktepatan penggunaan huruf kapital sebanyak 183, penulisan kata 163, tanda titik 301, tanda koma 93, dan tanda hubung 4; dan (5) faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan siswa melakukan kesalahan dalam menyusun kalimat efektif adalah kurangnya pemahaman siswa terhadap kaidah penyusunan kalimat efektif, proses pelaksanaan pembelajaran yang belum sesuai dengan tujuan, dan pengaruh bahasa pertama siswa terhadap penggunaan bahasa Indonesia. An analysis of sentence ineffectiveness in the essays of writing learning outcomes of the students of Junior High School 3 Kedungwuni AbstractThis study aims to describe the form of ineffective sentences in the students’ essays which included structure inaccuracies, the inaccurate choice of diction, inefficiency, the inappropriateness in spelling and factors that cause the students to make the mistakes in writing effective sentence. This research is qualitative descriptive. The subjects were the essays of writing instructions learning outcomes of the eighth grade students of Junior High School 3 Kedungwuni. The data were collected using reading and writing techniques, questionnaire and interview. The results are as follows. The forms of the ineffective sentences due to structure inaccuracies are sentences without subject (39 sentences), sentences without object (35), incomplete element sentences (28), and incorrect sentences (5). The forms of the ineffective sentences due to inaccurate choice of diction are inaccurate diction (52 items) and non-standard diction (17). The forms of the ineffective sentences due to inefficiency are the use of unnecessary elements (62 items), the repetition of unnecessary elements (18), and unnecessary decomposition (19). The forms of the ineffective sentences due to the inappropriateness in spelling are incorrect capitalization (183 items), misspelling (163), wrong use of periods (301), wrong use of comma (93), and wrong use of hyphens (4). The factors that cause the students to make the mistakes in writing ineffective sentences include the students' lack of understanding of the rules in writing effective sentences, the teaching processes not in accordance with purpose, and the influence of students’ first language on the use of Indonesian. The implication of this research is that the teacher makes such an effort to make a teaching strategy which is more appropriate in the teaching of writing that the mistakes can be reduced.
