Abstract

Teaching language in this global era demands mostly the creativity of the teachers, this is because in 21th century, students need to be critical thinkers, creative, communicative and collaborative. Therefore, the creativity of the teacher is manifested by evaluating    the multiple resources and adapting or adopting them based on the contextualized learning situation including individual differences, styles and learners needs. It is also essential for the teacher to integrate the four macro skills in teaching language in order to make the students more communicative and collaborative. Hence, this paper presents the evaluation of the language teaching resources before and during applying them to the classroom contexts. The data were collected by document review, classroom observation and interview with the secondary school teacher. The data were analyzed qualitatively through interactive model. There is variation of the results based on the techniques of data collection. The interview    shows that theoretically the teacher is creative to make the materials for students. Meanwhile, the observation and document review findings show that there is a need of improvement on the way to evaluate and use the English materials based on the context. Finally, we suggest that the theoretical knowledge from interview should be implemented practically in class and in evaluating the textbooks in order to adopt or adapt by adding or removing some materials to make English textbooks match with students contexts.

Abstract

Translation plays greater role in recent time. This phenomenon especially occurs in efforts of bridging meanings and expressions across two different languages or more. In such effort, certainly there should be good understanding toward both the source language and the target language. Unfortunately, the bridge often cannot be constructed well due to the problems of non-equivalence. Therefore, throughout the study the researchers would like to elaborate the techniques that might be used for constructing the bridge between the two languages and the problems that occur during the translation project. In conducting the study, the researchers would strive to translate a copy of presidential decree by applying the selected techniques and by analysing the problems that might appear. The copy of presidential decree had been selected because the copy might not have been available in other languages especially in English. In addition, foreign people and institutions need to learn the decree since they might be doing business that has been associated to the energy in Indonesia. During the study, the researchers applied three techniques and found four problems during the translation project. As conclusion, the researchers found that the three translation techniques have been supporting one to another and the translation problems have been related to the Indonesian culture since the language and culture are inseparable.

Abstract

The present study attempts to present the evidence of how learners of English as Second Language perform the target language by involving 20 participants from one of state universities in Yogyakarta. The participants are sitting in the first semester majoring English Literature. In investigating the target language performance this study used a writing assignment namely recount text in order to identify language development in relation to grammar acquisition comitted by the learners. Errors made by the learners tend to show interlanguage that the learners performance gains immediate status between native language and target language. The study found that the leaners explored 15 grammar aspects including past tense, modality, to + infinitive , gerund, make, passive voice ,sentence elements, prepositions, articles, collocations, singular and plural nouns, pronouns, relative pronouns, question word order and native language transfer.  The approximate cause of the errors are overgeneralization , learning strategy and native transfer. Moreover, overgeneralization becomes the most frequent in making errors that is by consistently using past tense in dealing with verbs. Thus, it is suggested that the teacher is necessary to sharpen the material spesifically based on actual evidence of learners’ performance in order to accomodate what the learners need.
