Abstract

The study was aimed to define the morphogenetic characteristics of native song fowl chickens of West Sumatra called Kokok Balenggek. Sixty Kokok Balenggek chickens raised by farmers in Tigo Lurah sub district, Solok district were used as samples. They consisted of 40 males and 20 females. Both qualitative and quantitative morphogenetic data were collected and measured, including: color of feather and shank; form of comb; length of tars metatarsus, tibia, femur; body weight and distance between pelvis bone by females. By males, feather color of Kokok Balenggek chickens were dominated by wild feather type (e+) and silver (S) of 42,5 % and 22,5 %, respectively. Comb were mostly single form (90 %). While feather color of females were dominated by black (S) and white (25 % each), pea comb (90 %), shank color of white yellow (Id) (85 %). Length of metatarsus for male and females of 100,2 + 11,05 mm, 80,03 + 8,64 mm; tibia of 134,40 + 18,73 and 117,14 + 10,24 mm; femur of 103,36 + 16,94 and 85,63 + 11,47 mm; body weight of 1,74 + 0,46 kg and 1,1 + 0,62 kg/head, respectively. Data of distance length between pelvis bone by females were found 41,17 + 4,32 mm.

Abstract

The objectives of this experiment were to study the effect of chicken hypophyse gland exttact for spawning of carp. Each twenty female of about 2950-3050 g/head and 100 of male carp of about 300-350 g body weight/head were used in the experiments. Hypophyse gland extract were prepared from the hypophyse glands of broiler chickens of about 10 days old. As treatments, the extract was injected in five different doses of 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 mg/kg body weight. Each dose was injected twice. The second injection was done after 1 hours. Each treatment consisted of 4 replications as block. Parameter measured included: egg fertility, egg hatching rate and survival rate of larvae, water qualities (temperature, dissolved 02. free CO2, NH3 content and pH). Data were statistically analyzed by variance analysis in randomized block design (RBD). Results indicated that injection of broiler's hypophyse gland extract gave highly significant (P < 0.01) effect on spawning egg fertility, egg hatching rate and survival rate of carp larvae of three days old. The optimal injection dose was found 582 mg broiler's hypophyse gland/kg carp body weight.

Abstract

Using secondary data, a survey was conducted to assess the availability of potentially beef cattle feed in West Sumatra province. Two methods were applied to analye the collected data; 1) supporting capacity index (IDD) developed by Livestock Research Institute at Ciawi Bogor which also legally accepted as an instrument to determine regional capacity in supporting cattle feed. 2). Nell and Rollinson method which has been applied in Indonesia since 1974 supported by UNDP. Results showed that by the first method (IDD), West Sumatra has 1,888,032.77 ton and 459,041,026 ton potential feed from agriculture and agricultural by products respectively in 2007. The second Nell and Rollinson method confirmed that West Sumatra has 33,286,255,20 ton from grass production and 588,638.72 ton agricultural by products. Compared between the West Sumatra regional capacity to support beef cattle as 1,028,935.9 animal unit, and ruminants population as 446,072.7 animal unit, there is an additional capacity to keep ruminants as 562,863.2 animal unit. Based on the cattle contribution as 63 % to total population, West Sumatra could increase its support to cattle population by 355,110.6 animal unit. Nell and Rollinson showed an optimistic figure, namely 1,408,892 animal unit for cattle.
