Abstract

The Pesisir cattle are indigenous West Sumatera cattle. Their quality needs to be improved since they can live in local environment with sufficiently available feed resources. A research has been done to study the effects of feeding level and fattening period to the growth and the carcass characteristics of the Pesisir cattle. This research was designed by using block design with three blocks. The first factor was two levels of feeding, i.e: A1 = 50 % concentrate + 50 % ammoniated rice straw, A2 = 75 % concentrate + 25 % ammoniated rice straw. The second was time period of fattening, i.e: B1 = 3 months and B2 = 4 months. The results showed that there was no interaction between the level of feeding and fattening period to the growth, percentage of carcass, the back fat thickness and the rib eye area of the Pesisir cattle (P> 0.05). The higher of concentrate percentage, the higher the growth of the cattle, the thicker the back fat and the wider the rib eye area will be (P<0.05). Similarly, the longer the fattening, the higher the percentage of carcass, the thicker the back fat and the wider rib eye area will be.

Abstract

The discriminate function and canonical correlation analysis were carried out in order to differentiate between subpopulations, and to determine the discriminate variables which may contribute on the differentiation of the three Pesisir cattle subpopulations in West Sumatra. Around 528 of Pesisir cattle's were as sample. They were distributed in three subpopulations in West Sumatra: Pesisir Selatan, Padang Pariaman, and Agam districts. Body measurement data were collected for body weight, body length, withers height, hip height, chest width, chest depth, chest girth, hip width, head length, and head width. The data were statistically analyzed by using discriminate function. The results of the study found that the Pesisisr cattle growing in Padang pariaman showed very different in body measurement with those growing in Agam and Pesisir Selatan subpopulation. The results also indicated that withers height, hip height, head width, body weight, and head length were the most importance body measurement to differentiate amongst the Pesisir cattle population in west sumatra.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out the simple model of regression equation for estimation of body weight (y in kg) based on the data of other body parameters of Simmental and Ongole Cross cattle's. Sixty two bulls and thirty six cow kept by farmer in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra were measured their body of body length (x1 in cm), thorax circle (x2 in cm), shoulder high (x3 in cm). Criteria for choosing the best equation are R2, R2 Adjusted, Mean square Error (MSE). Thirty equation was considered for choosing the best equation. The best equation for predicting of body weight of bulls were y = 0,018(x2 -18)'2 and y = 0,000124(x1'2 * x2), while .for cows: y = 0,0156(x2 - 6)'2 and y = 0,000118(x1'2 * x2).

Abstract

The objectives of this experiment was to study the effict of chicken hypophyse gland extract for spawning of cat fish. Each twenty four female and male cat fishes of about 1000-1050 g body weight/head were used in the experiments. Hypophyse gland extract were prepared from the hypophyse glands of broiler chickens. As treatments, the extract were injected in six different doses of 300. 400, 500, 600, 700 and 800 mg/kg body weight. Each doses was injected twice. The second injection were done after 4 hours. Each treatment consisted of 4 replications as block. Parameter measured included: spawning latent time, ovulation and egg maturation degree, water qualities (temperature, dissolved 02, free CO2, NH3 content and pH). Data were statistically analyzed by variance analysis in randomized block design (RBD). Results indicated that injection of broiler's hypophyse gland extract gave highly significant (P < 0.01) effect on the acceleration of spawning latent time (10 hrs). increase of percentage of ovulation (84.32%) and egg maturation degree (89,91 %). The optimal injection dose was found 741,95 mg broiler's hypophyse gland/kg catfish body weight.

Abstract

The present research was conducted to investigate the potency and viabitity of oocytes of Simmental cattle for production of embryo in in-vitro method. Oacytes were collected from the ovaries of slaughtered Simmental cattle. At first, the ovaries were cleaned and measured for weigh, length, diameter and thickness. The ovaries were then sliced to collect oocyte follicles. The collected oocytes which were devided into 3 groups based on length size (<2, 2-6 and >6 mm) were kept in ringer solution (0,9 % Nacl) by temperature of 35oC. By using microscope the physical performances of the oocytes were observed and then classified into 3 different qualities of A, B and C/D. The oocytes of A ond B quality were kept in TCM-199 medium for maturity process. Their viability was described as percentage af oocytes which reach metaphase II (M-II). stage during the proces of maturity. The data was statistically analyzed by t-test. Results of the experiment showed that the physical measurement af ovaries were found significant diferent (P>0,05) between the left and right sides, but the potency of follicles from the both sides were not significant different (P>0,05). The percentage of oocytes reach the metaphase II stage was about 51,28 s/d 13,65 %. It was concluded that Simmental has a high the potency and viability oocytes for embryos production in vitro.

Abstract

West Java is an imported-beef feedlotter region. Almost 50% of imported cow from Australia are cattled in several district and city. The ammount of cattled imported beef increases every year. Its shows that the implementation of import policy has not been optimal. It did not develop the business of local cattle production. The condition was suspected because of lack of effective implementation of policies by the authorities. This study aims to analyze how the varied pattern of the implementtation of beef import policy reviewed from the aspect of communication, resources, disposition and bureaucratic structure. Research conducted in fifteen distric and city in West Java. This research used the survey method, multistage random sampling, analyzed by using the model of Edward to measure the level policy implementation. The result are, (l) there were pattern variations in import policy implementation: 2) In general, implementation of the import policy, varies from moderate to good. 3) Implementation from the province into districts varies with the medium pattern. 4) Sukabumi, Ciamis and Bandung district is better than the other several district and cities in West Java. Conclussion: policy implementation not yet effective and differs depending on resources.

Abstract

The research was aimed to study the influence of credit schemes in providing breeding stock on the performance of beef cattle development for smallholder farmers. The research was carried out through a survey on 183 respondents who involved the beef cattle development project. They were located in three Development Areas of Beef Cattle in Jambi Province: Singkut, Regency of Serolangun; Pamenang, Regency of Merangin; and Kuamang Kuning, Regency of Bungo. The respondents were divided into two groups of credit recipients, who received credit with FI (Full In-kind) and CC (Cash Credit) schemes. Results showed that there were more heifers obtained from CC scheme (50 %) to become acceptors of Artificial Insemination program than that of obtained from FI scheme (7 %). Birth Rate of the heifers from FI scheme (0,51 + 0,18 heads/year) was significantly lower than that from CC scheme (0,84 + 0,80 heads/year). Mortality Rate of calves from CC scheme (1,7 %) was lower than that from FI scheme (6,5,%). The number of respondents from CC scheme who planted grasses (71 %) and offered concentrate for their animals (46 %) was higher than that form from FI ( 28 % and I6 %, respectively). Respondents received CC scheme showed more positive Attitude toward Beef Cattle Development than those received FI scheme. It was concluded that CC scheme in providing breeding stocks for smallholder farmers in Jambi Province had a better influence on the performance of beef cattle development than FI scheme did. Therefore, the researcher recommended to the government to reevaluate the existence of FI scheme.

Abstract

This paper discussed the potency of kampong chickens as the main source of employment and income in West Sumatra. From about 2 millions of Indonesian kampong chickens in 2005, about 5.725.515 were found in West Sumatra. In terms of egg production, body weight gain and feed utilization efficiency, the productivity and biological performances of kampong chickens were much lower than that of hybrid chickens. On the other hand, the product of kampong chickens, e.g. egg and meat, in the market were normally valued higher by the consumers because of their better taste and healthier product. In addition, kampong chickens could be intensively reared in lower production cost because of their lower nutritional and management requirements. Results of some studies has shown that production of kampong chicken might be directed for business unit as back yard or intensively farming especially in supporting of economic development in the rural community.
