Abstract

Lexis or vocabulary is one of the important components of the language. Without knowing the vocabulary, learners of a language cannot be able to understand the language itself because vocabulary establishes the frame of language. It is important for learners to enhance their lexical knowledge. Morphological awareness has significant role on the lexical knowledge. This study aims to find out the correlation between morphological awareness and lexical knowledge among Indonesian EFL learners who possess Indonesian language as their first language. Indonesian is an agglutinative language which relies much on prefix and suffix. This study employs quantitative approach with correlation statistics design. The participants of this study are 89 first-year students of English Language Education Program Universitas Brawijaya. The findings revealed that the majority of the participants are in the medium level of morphological awareness and lexical knowledge. The findings show that there is a significant correlation between morphological awareness and lexical knowledge with .842 correlation degrees. Learners with high morphological awareness will have high lexical knowledge. The relationship applies in Indonesian EFL learners who possess Indonesian language as their first language that belongs to agglutinative language which contains several morphemes per word. It is suggested for the future researchers to look greater depth into morphological awareness and lexical knowledge in causal relationship.

Abstract

1Reading is one of the four necessary important language skills among those skills in learning English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL). Pressley & Afflerbach (1995) cited in Erlando (2017) states that good readers should not solely read the text to comprehend a text, but also it should be connected with past experiences. It will ease the students to understand reading material when the knowledge is absorbed first. The research reflects upon teaching reading strategies introduced by Vacca & Vacca (1999) in analyzing the teaching strategies implemented on students’ reading comprehension at a vocational high school, SMK Negeri 2 Batu. A case study is used with the aim to describe teaching reading strategies applied by the teacher by conducting an interview with the English Teacher and observing teaching reading strategies implementation in class at SMK Negeri 2 Batu. The subject of the research is first-year students of AHP A, SMK Negeri 2 Batu consisting of 28 students. Abstract

Song is an interesting medium for teaching English in a foreign language context. Through songs, students can learn new vocabulary, the grammar, and the idiomatic expression in an authentic way. The purpose of this paper are 1) to investigate the implementation of songs for listening and speaking activity; 2) to identify the students’ and teacher's problems and solutions in using songs for listening and speaking activities, and 3) to investigate how the students’ listening and speaking activities are assessed through the use of songs. The design of the study is a mixed method explanatory sequential design. The data was firstly collected from the questionnaire and followed with an interview. The researchers used a convenient sampling method because of its accessibility and availability. The targeted population was the eleventh graders of SMA N 1 Lawang. The sample was the 6th parallel class of science major, and the 3rd Social Science major. The total respondents were 34 students.  The result shows that the listening activities of song selection and its comprehension were done at home, while the speaking activity in song interpretation was done in the classroom. The finding also reveals that many students had no problem in the listening comprehension, especially in the accent and pronunciation (41.2%). Some students had grammar, pronunciation, self-confidence, and lack of vocabulary problems in interpreting songs orally even though half of the students were in a neutral position. The solutions for their listening problems, among others, are finding difficult words in the dictionary, memorizing the words and the songs, and listening to native speakers' speech and dialogs from movies and YouTube. While for the speaking problems, the solutions are to have a lot of practice with friends and native speakers, joining speech competitions, and singing English songs. The students' performance in listening and speaking skills were assessed by using scoring rubric prepared by the teachers.

Abstract

This research stimulates the use of toSpeech phonetic transcription app as media for teaching phonetics in English pronunciation. This research is descriptive qualitative. The analysis shows that in using toPhonetic app, we as teachers or lecturers can click the website https://tophonetics.com/.  The apps show 1) several languages available. 2) a column box for pasting English text, 3) an option of English accents both British and American with several choices of a male or female voice. 3) an option to show the phonetic transcription including transcription only, transcription slide by side with English text, and transcription line by line with English. 4) an option to set the pronunciation speed. In using toPhonetic app, we as teachers or lecturers can choose the English language to teach pronunciation. We paste English text into the available column box and choose from a male or female voice and an English accent both British and American. We also can set the pronunciation speed. If we click the sound of pronunciation, the chosen voice and accent will pronounce each word and shows the phonetic transcription in British and American accent. We can play the sound and ask the students to be concerned with the phonetic transcription and imitate the sound with an American accent. Given the limited time available for English class, pronunciation is sometimes the most disregarded part of language learning. However, when the pronunciation of the learner is expected to be good or native-like, as is the case when a language teacher or lecturer is involved, opportunities for students to do self-study inside and outside of class should be considered, of them is utilizing toSpeech as an app for their learning English pronunciation.

Abstract

Religious tolerance has become one of global issues in the world. So, Indonesia has regulation which specifies that the graduate competency standard for educational units for all grades is that students must accept the heterogeneity of faiths, communities, nations, races and classes. In this study, the textbooks which is published by the Educational Minister of Indonesia are also published under the category of Electronic School Books (ESB) in the form of electronic book (e-book). This study tried to examine the religious content reflected on three ELT textbooks currently used in Indonesia public high schools to teach Senior High School Students Grade X, XI, and XII            This research uses qualitative method with content analysis in analyzing the textbooks. This analysis is based on UNESCO (2017) checklist evaluation under the category of representation of diversity especially on religion. The data are collected by classifying contents in the textbooks based on the indicator list from UNESCO (2017).            Religious tolerance can happen within and across each religion because one religion can have so much different religious sect. The religious tolerance does not reflect quite well in the three textbooks because this study only relies on the indicator/recommendations from the UNESCO. The result shows that the textbooks do not provide enough information of each religion, learners do not have space and room to discuss or make a question about religion from the English textbook. The amount of space assigned to religious material in these textbooks are only provide four out of seven recommendations from the UNESCO and it is hardly noticeable to the learners. These textbooks still can be used but needs more additional materials to use in the school especially material that related to religious tolerance. It means that these textbooks are significant imbalance between religion groups exist in Indonesia as materials to support learning in the classroom.
