Abstract

Vocabulary is an essential part in learning English. The common problems in learning English might be caused of the students were lack of vocabulary. The aimed of the study was to solve the problems by using riddles game. The researcher used Classroom Action Research as the research design. There were four stages in one cycle in which planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action, and reflecting on the action. One cycle of this research that consisted of three meetings. The subject of the study was 7 H class. The researcher used the research instruments such as interview guide, questionnaire, observation checklist, field notes and test. The criterion of success in which 70% of the students passed the minimum score that was 80. The average score of post-test was 93,54% students passed the criterion of success. Based on the post questionnaire, the students felt interested during learning process and the students’ vocabulary mastery was improved. The  researcher suggested to English teacher to use riddles game as an alternative technique in teaching vocabulary, to students could apply this game out of the class, and the researcher hopes other researchers can use riddles game as a reference to conduct their research on the field because riddles game is the effective way to teach vocabulary.

Abstract

For decades linguists have been interested in doing research on English vocabulary and vocabulary teaching. In the article Learning Vocabulary through Games published in the Asian EFL Journal, Huyen and Nga investigate the benefits of using games for their students’ vocabulary learning. They argue that games are helpful for students to enrich their English vocabulary acquisition. As of May 2021, the article has been quite influential and cited for 381 times by scholars and students around the world. This paper presents a critical review of the aforementioned article. The discussion is mainly centred on the relation between the research and communicative language teaching, strengths and weaknesses of the research, and reflection of the research findings on the authors’ learning and teaching experience.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of Telegram application as a teaching media in teaching English and to know students’ perceptions toward this implementation. Using case study as research design, the teacher who used Telegram as teaching media in English teaching and 2 students who are taught by this teaching media were being participants in this qualitative study. The observation checklist form adapted from Lubis (2018) and the interview guidelines adapted from Chorida (2017) was used to gain the data. To reach the objective of the study, the researcher conducted online observation and interviews with those participants. The finding shows that the implementation of Telegram at SMKN 4 Malang can give positive impact in English language teaching. The use of Telegram facilitates students to autonomously learn. It is due to all of the materials needed by students are already provided with clear instructions by the English teacher in one of its features called Bot API. Related to the student responses in using Telegram application, students are pretty attractive to use this Telegram application as the teaching media. Therefore, it is suggested to English teachers to implement Telegram application as one of teaching media in delivering materials.

Abstract

This study investigates the English as Foreign Language (EFL) students' perception and motivation toward Quizizz as e-learning media in English e-classroom. The total number of participants in this study is 106 students of 11th graders of Senior High School consist of five classes who had experience toward Quizizz. A descriptive statistics approach is applied in this study. The data collected by using closed-ended questionnaire. The obtained data were analyzed by using SPSS version 25.00. The result shows most of EFL students had positive perception and motivation toward Quizizz. Therefore, Quizizz as e-learning media can support the learning process in English e-classroom. It indicates that Quizizz is an appropriate e-learning media that can be used in English e-classroom and it can increase EFL students’ motivation during e-learning.

Abstract

Speaking English has been one of the most challenging skill for EFL students to master. Additionally, students should learn vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation in order to master speaking skill. The fluency and appropriateness of students’ speaking abilities should be improved. Speaking problems are common among students, including a lack of vocabulary, poor grammar and spelling, the last is the use of mother tongue. The researcher distributes a questionnaire to the participants in order to identify the students’ speaking difficulties and overcome them through a joyful Guessing Game technique. The participant in this study were students from Excellent Course, Kampung Inggris, Pare, Kediri, who were in speaking class with various school levels. In conducting this research Classroom Action Research as a method and Guessing Game as a teaching strategy. The study was conducted in a specific class for a week. The total number of the students participating in this study was 45 students, and they are divided into 3 classes in “Improving Speaking Class”. The instruments of this research are pre-test, post-test, speaking rubrics from Hugher (2003:131), and a questionnaire adapted from Ratna S, et al. (2017:33) and Djasminar A, et al (2012). The data was calculated using Ms. Excel. The result of the study shows that only 27% students succeed in doing the pre-test before implementing guessing game. Surprisingly, after guessing game was implemented the number has increased into 62% of the students proven to be a success in the post-test. It is reasonable to conclude that using guessing game to teach speaking is success. Furthermore, the students responded positively to being taught via guessing game and they seemed to enjoy the learning process. The outcome of the students’ perception questionnaire demonstrates this.

Abstract

Universitas Brawijaya (UB) with the assistance of Pusat Studi dan Layanan Disabilitas (PSLD) have implemented an inclusive education environment, as the need for equal education chance for different abilities Indonesians. There is an assumption that engagement from a combination of language learning or learning language’s cognitive, social, and affective aspects can affect the learning process and academic achievement of a special need student. To reach the research objective, interview sessions and classroom observations session were aimed at measuring the students' language learning engagement based on three-domains; cognitive, affective and social, in students’ perspective and ongoing activities. This research shows fluctuate results based on the interviews and observations data of two blind students. The main engaged factors found are positive teaching approaches and attitudes, also both students’ learning autonomy.

Abstract

The coronavirus outbreak has impacted all aspects of human life, including the greatest impact is on education. Therefore, the education system that is being carried out conventionally must be converted into online learning to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This article aims to describe (1) the students'  opinions regarding English subjects in online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, (2) the students' difficulties during online learning in English subjects, (3) the students' opinions about understanding the material in English subjects during online learning. This research used a descriptive qualitative design, by using interviews to get the data. The subjects of this study were 2 female and 1 male high achiever students from the first language class in Senior High School 2 situated in the area of a small town Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia. The research instruments used were mainly personal chats interviews with the subjects of the study. The data collection was conducted in December 2020. The results showed that (1) online learning is less effective, significant, and boring; (2) difficulties that they face are unstable network, difficulty in the delivery of material provided by the teacher, and teacher’s teaching methods; (3) most of them also had difficulty in understanding the materials provided by the teacher.

Abstract

Need analysis is pivotal before developing materials or syllabus. Some studies indicated the importance of conducting a needs analysis. Although many researchers had already conducted needs analysis studies, there is a lack of proper material that can accommodate the students to learn intensive listening courses, especially during the covid-19 pandemic. This study aimed to get the information that will be beneficial to compose the material of the Intensive Listening course. One hundred and twenty sophomores were employed in a survey study to describe what their needs are related to their listening skills. A close-ended questionnaire was employed to find the students’ needs. The findings indicated that 3 important things can affect the material development process such as materials that students need, the method that the teacher used, and students’ range of proficiency. The result implied that in the process of teaching listening and developing listening materials, the lecturer should be aware of the topics, media, and students' proficiency.

Abstract

The proper use of digital learning technologies in the classroom may boost student engagement, assist teachers in improving lesson ideas, enable individualized learning, and also assists learners in developing 21st-century abilities. ePals is one of global online learning platforms that can be used for connecting, communicating and collaborating with teachers and students all over the world. ePals is utilized to teach English that provides opportunities to English learners including young learners to communicate with people across countries. Descriptive qualitative method was used to acquire the data gained from observation and interview. The findings revealed that the use of ePals for young learners becomes effective teaching and learning process to connect with students all over the world as a media to use the target language. Young learners were enthusiastic about activities of the project made by the teacher with school partners through ePals that allow young learners to communicate with foreigners using English, even though there were some problems encountered by the teacher and young learners about the internet connection and language. Hence, with the success to bring the experience of using the target language for young learners, the use of ePals with different levels is highly suggested.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to identify the category of students’ instrumental motivation and to describe the importance of instrumental motivation in the English learning process of English as Foreign Language (EFL) students. A quantitative descriptive method was used in this research to analyze the data. The subject of this research was 28 EFL students from the fourth semester students of English Education Study Program at STKIP-PGRI Lubuklinggau. The researchers used questionnaire and interview as instruments in obtaining the data investigation. Techniques for analysis the data were identification, calculation, classification, description and conclusion. The result of this research revealed that the students’ instrumental motivation was in strong category with total average 77.93 %. It meant that the categories level of motivation among the fourth semester students of English Education Study Program at STKIP-PGRI Lubuklinggau to study English is strong motivation. This proved that students had a very strong level of instrumental motivation. The students believed that a good way will be a good thing and motivation is enough to help them. With the aim of passing the exam, getting a job, having a better career, and getting a better future was their motivation in learning English. Automatically, it was proved that they had instrumental motivation, and it made them more motivated to achieve their goals though they learn English as foreign language. It indicated that instrumental motivation had an important role in the English learning process to the EFL students in English education study program at STKIP-PGRI Lubuklinggau. In summary, instrumental motivation was one of the factor that influenced the students to be success in learning a foreign language (English). This motivation was also very helpful in English learning process, because students who had this motivation show that they wanted to learn English seriously.
