Abstract

In history, the development of Islamic thought includes of a variety of topics that were adopted later by both philosophers and Sufis. Indeed, the polemics frequently led to the murder of certain school leaders and its followers, such as in the case of Sufi leaders: Abu Mansur al Hallaj and Sharwardi al-maqtul. This is in contrast with Muslim philosophers, who still survived in spite of the fact that their thoughts were totally in opposite to theological tenets of society. Therefore, the question arise as to the relation between falsafah and tasawwuf. For this purpose, the idea of falsafah and tasawwuf of ‘Ibn Tufail and ‘Ibn ‘Arabi is worth studying. This study shows that both thinkers tried to combine these two subjects in achieving the truth; that is in spite of the fact that both falsafah and tasawwuf employed two different approaches in reaching the truth, the former through reason, while the later through define guidance.

Abstract

This paper elucidates and analyses one of the Muslim intellectual heritage in Indonesia which is phenomenal and cosmopolitan, what is called Islam Nusantara (Islam of the Archipelago). When reading the history of the arrival of Islam in Archipelago, most of the scholars studying Archipelago Islam agreed that Islamization of this area was conducted in a peaceful way. They assimilated and complemented each other to become what is called “citizen of the world”. Derridas called this as a model of universal hospitality or guiding principle to protect people from wars. As a religion of peace, Islam is cosmopolitan. This is proved by the fact that Islam is a religion which includes races and nations. This feature is marked by Nine saints (Walisanga) as Javanese unique agents in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, taking interactionist approach between Islam and local culture. This in turn creates Indonesian Islamic civilization which is called today “Islam Nusantara”, Islam without such obstacles as culture, religion, and nation, Islam with a peaceful face that respects humanity and emphasizes tolerance and empathy to human beings.

Abstract

The religious moderation adhered to by Muslims is based on following the religion of Islam, which calls for righteousness, mercy and justice in words, deeds and beliefs. The method of Talaqqi in which Muslim scholars whether Salaf or Khalaf used a long time ago has contributed in spreading moderation. This method was one of the most important things Muslim scholars used to combat the spread of extremist ideas and to preserve Islamic heritage science for the following generations. This method is also used by south east Asia scholars, but in this era it is facing many challenges because of extremists who wants to destroy this method in order to open the way for themselves to spread new extremist ideas and false doctrines that are contrary to the believes of true Salaf and Khalaf. Therefore we have to adhere to the method of Talaqqi to maintain moderation.
