Abstract

Abstract Teachers must be able to cooperate with their students in the class to make the teaching and learning activities enjoyable. A good teacher has to use appropriate strategies to make his or her students fluent readers. Teachers also have to make students feel comfortable so that they can achieve the objective of the teaching and learning activities. Responding to the problems and considering the factors causing them, the researcher taught that the best way to improve the students’ reading ability is through group work. Group work is a group of students who work together. Students in group can share, compare, and contrast ideas and thoughts. Group work enables students to study more because they learn together in an enjoyable way. Students will be motivated to study because working in group makes them help each other, especially when facing difficulties in reading. Students can get the meaning of some vocabularies and the content of the text easily. This research showed that group work can improve students’ reading ability and motivation. Abstract

Abstract This research entitled “The Effectiveness of TTW (Think-Talk-Write) Strategy in Teaching Writing Descriptive Text. TTW (Think-Talk-Write) strategy is one of strategy in teaching learning process, TTW (Think-Talk-Write) strategy one of cooperative learning. Think-Talk-Write (TTW) Strategy is starting from involvement of students in thinking or dialogue with it self after reading process. Then talk and share ideas (sharing) with friend before writing. One group consist of 4-6 students, in this group of students requested making notes, explaining, listening and sharing ideas with friends and express them through writing. The problem of the research is “To find out the effectiveness TTW (Think-Talk-Write) strategy in teaching writing descriptive text?” The population in the research is the second grade students of UNSWAGATI CIREBON. The writer takes two classes of the second grade students as the sample from this research which were divided into two groups; experimental group (7AB) and control group (7CD). The instruments of collecting data are tests; pre-test and post-test. To analyze of data, the writer used a quasi-experimental design. The writer gave writing test to gather the data. There were pre-test and post-test. The formula that was used analyze the data was t-test. It was used to determine whether there was significance difference between students’ score in experimental group and control group.

Abstract

This research concentrates on investigating the impacts of outdoor learning activities in the nature based Kindergarten School of Universe Al-Ghiffari Cirebon. The research is attempted to find out whether outdoor learning activities impact children’s self-development or not. By doing triangulation as the method of this research, it will help to get the results more efficient, stronger, and credible. The results found that outdoor learning activities impact positively and effectively on children’s progress across all areas of children’s self developments. These areas include cognitive development, affective development, personal, social, and emotional development, and physical and behavioral development. Abstract

Abstract In learning foreign language such as English, a learner should have motivation in order to have willingness to learn. This study is an attempt to investigate the students’ motivation in learning English by using Hangman Game. And this study was to find out if the use of Hangman game motivates the students in learning English. The method used in this study was quantitative with experimental research design. The target population of this study was the eighth grade students of MTs Negeri Cirebon 1. The writer took two classes as samples and the number of the samples was 36 students. The samples were divided into experimental group and control group. There are two research instruments which were used to collect data. They were questionnaire and observation. The result analysis of observation showed that the students in experimental group had higher motivation than in control group. Meanwhile, the calculation of the value of the questionnaire showed that there were significant differences between experimental group and control group. The result of taccount was 2,44 while the result of ttable was 1,994. It was mean that the value of taccount (2,44) > ttable (1,994). So, hypotheses alternative (Ha) was accepted or the use of Hangman game motivate the students in learning English to eighth grade students of MTs Negeri Cirebon 1. Abstract

Writing, one of the four skills which have to be taught by educators in language learning. Starting from classroom observation implied that students confronted the difficulties in writing involving generating ideas, organizing words, and making compositions. This study supposes to explore some effects of pop culture as authentic materials for English language teaching in improving students’ writing skill. Due to pop culture relates to students’ life and experience, it is considered to be a stimulus for gaining students’ ideas, information, motivation, and interest in teaching writing. The students of secondary school were involved in this study and descriptive case study was employed to observe the importance of pop culture in writing class. Also, questionnaires and students’ works are the instruments to measure its effects. Both students’ works and result of the questionnaires pointed out that significantly improvement obtained after applying pop culture. In line with findings, it can be said that pop cultures have significant effects toward students’ writing skill. So, educators need to apply pop culture as their choices in future planning lesson. Abstract

This study was carried out to analyze and to classify the kinds and the source of students’ errors in writing negative sentences using simple present tense and simple present continuous tense. The purpose of this study were to describe kinds of the stundents’ errors in writing negative sentences and to find out the source of errors which the students made in writing negative sentences. The method used in this study was descriptive analysis research. Descriptive analysis in form qualitative research design applied in this study was case study. Furthermore, the subject of this study was the students of the seventh grade students of SMPN 13 Cirebon which consisted of 20 students. The data were collected through writing test and interview for students. The result of the analysis of students’ errors process showed that students committed errors into ten kinds of errors are made by students: 1. Omission, 2. Additional, 3. Misformation, 4. Misordering, 5. Omission and misformation, 6. Omission and misordering, 7. Additional and misordering, 8. Additional and misformation, 9. Omission and additional, 10. Misformation and misordering. Based on the finding of analysis, it showed the students made a total of 120 errors in catagory of verb which consist of 21 are omission, 22 are additional, 15 are misformation, 6 are misordering, 8 are omission and misformation, 20 are omission and misordering, 5 are additional and misordering, 10 are additional and mosformation, 10 are omission and additional, and 3 misformation and misordering. These errors were conducted because most of students were still influenced by their mother tongue and their Indonesian logical thinking (interlingual transfer). Besides, errors occurred because students generalized the rule and applied it incompletely (intralingual transfer). To sum up, it showed that the analysis of students’ errors in writing negative sentences using simple present tense and simple present continuous tense is difficult for students. Abstract

Abstract The goals of this research were: (1) To analyze the students’ mistakes in speaking skill; (2) To find out the difficulties of local topics in speaking. This research used the descrivtif qualitative method. The writer described and analyzed the students’ errors in speaking skill and the difficulties used the local materials. The research was carried out at the first year students of english department in 2015/2016 academic year. it was strated from Februari to May 2016. The population was the first semester students of english department in academic year of 2015/2016. The number of population was 27 students. The results of this research were: (1) lots of students were able to speak well and few of them were still lack (2) Some of students felt difficult to use some words of local tpoics in speaking. Abstract

This study, analyzed the students’ communication performance and competence in the speaking class. This study also measured the students’ communication apprehension level and its correlation with communication performance and competence. 30 students of second year students of SMK Pariwisata Kosgoro Cirebon took part in this study. The data were gathered through questionnaire, presentation test to get the score of communication performance and interview test to get the score of communication competence. The correlation study was used to investigate the relation of each variable. The result from the students’ performance showed that 66,7% of the students scored below the school standard score (75) and 70% of the students scored below standard score in the interview test. The participants showed the highest apprehension to public speaking and the lowest apprehension to group discussion. Their level of apprehension showed that 43.3% students were in moderate level and 56,7% students were in high level of apprehension. It was also found that communication apprehension was negatively correlated with communication performance. While the result from the correlation between communication apprehension and competence showed that there was a very low positive correlation but, there was a high positive correlation between communication competence and performance. Abstract

Speaking is one of skills which should be mastered by students in studying English. However in Indonesian school hours the chance to practice speaking is limited. One way to obtain more practices to speak outside of school hours is by joining English club extracurricular program. English club as an English extracurricular program in state Madrasah Aliyah Pembangunan Mandirancan gives chance to students to speak in more flexible condition with their peers. Thus, it is interesting to investigate the impact students perception on English club extracurricular toward students’ speaking skill. The 26 students joined English club extracurricular as the sample. The techniques used obtaining the data were observation, questionnaire and speaking test. It is suggested that the students should joined English club extracurricular because it can improve students’ speaking skill. Keyword :English Club, Extracurricular Activities, Speaking skill

Abstract

Abstract The THE IMPACT OF SURROUNDINGS ON THE CHARACTERS IN THOMAS HARDY’S NOVELS” is to apply the writers’ knowledge on literature and to show their interest in reading novels. The writers transfered not only their limited knowledge in analysing novels as literary works but also building the awareness of the importance of reading habit to their students of Unswagati because all of them take the subject of Introduction to English Literature. Reading and analyzing novel is really beneficial for students that both can improve the students reading skill but also their English ability, moreover, they will have the ability in criticizing the novel from different views. In brief, it will also improve their critical thinking. Afterwards, by describing the characters and their attitudes toward each other and how the surroundings influence them, we also learn about their culture. The theory that is used in analysing those novels is from Harvey, Murphy, Klarer, and Lodge. The method that is applied in analysing the characters and the surroundings is descriptive qualiative in which the writers take the data by reading the three novels, explain in details about the characters and the surroundings involved in the story and some other elements supported the completeness of the story.
