Abstract

Chicken meat is an animal product for bussines. The meat is consumed nearly everyday by human being. Uncontrolled use of antibiotics in animal feed produces a negative impact on both animal and human being, who consume animal product. As a traditional herbal, garlic has an active substance called allicin. This active substance can be used to improve performance and carcass quality of broilers. An experiment was conducted to study effect of garlic meal in the diet on cholesterol and carcass quality of broilers. A total of 100 day old chicks has used. A completely randomized design was adapted with 5 treatment and 4 raplicate cages of birds each. Differences every treatment were tested with Duncan’s multiple range test. Experimental diets used were : control diet (R0), 1.5% garlic meal (R1), 3% garlic meal (R2), 4.5% garlic meal (R3) and 6% garlic meal (R4). Feed and water were offered ad libitum, birds were kept for 42 days for performance and carcass quality data. Three birds from each cage were slangheered for measuring cholesterol. The result showed that treatment gave a significant effect (P<0.05) on meat cholesterol levels. However, feed intake, carcass percentage, carcass parts and abdominal fat was not significantly (P>0.05) affected by treatment R3 with 4.5% garlic meal produced the best result. In conclusion, the result of this study indicated that the use of garlic meal in the diet result in good cholesterol and carcass quality. Key words : Garlic, Cholesterol, Carcass Quality

Abstract

Study on habitat, distribution and size structure of opudi (Telmatherina antoniae) was carried out in Lake Matano, South Sulawesi from September 2010 to August 2011. Habitat was described based on underwater observations. Fish collections were accomplished monthly by using beach seine. The fish was distributed throughout littoral areas within clear water. The observed habitat ranged between sandy, cobbles to bouldery bottom substrate. Some parts of habitat had less vegetation and the others did not. Fish collected during the study were 2707 individuals, in which 53.08% of them were males and the remains were females. The individuals had standard length (SL) ranged between 32.76 and 85.67 mm. Male specimens were dominated by individuals ranged between 41.58 and 54.80 mm (78.98% of total male specimens). Female specimens were dominated by individuals ranged between 37.17 and 54.80 (87.80% of total female specimens). Both male and female individuals were dominated by large size classes.Key words: Distribution, habitat, size structure, Telmatherina antoniae.

Abstract

Research of macroalga diversity and bioactivity was conducted from February to September 2016 at Wediombo beach, Gunung Kidul district. The used sampling method was “metode jelajah” and the environmental parameters measured include temperature, salinity, depth, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen (DO), and concentration of nitrate and phosphate. Identification was based on morphological characteristics. Extraction sample was stratified using ethanol and ethyl acetate. Method of HTS (High Throughput Screening) was applied to test the potential of active compounds. Antimicrobial Test was conducted with cell growth indicators (MTT), while the indicator DPPH was used for the antioxidant test (80mg / 100ml), and TLC and GC-MS for profiling the active compound. Seventeen species macroalgal were found at the shore of Wediombo, includes: Rhodophyta (7 species), Phaeophyta (5 species) and Chlorophyta (5 species) of which were dominated by macroalgal on coral reefs. Nine macroalgae found to have antioxidant activity (Acrocystis nana, Caulerpa sp., Chaetomorpha crassa, Dictyota sp., Gracilaria canaliculata, Gelidiella acerosa, Sargassum sp., Turbinaria sp. and Ulva lactuca) and 3 macroalgae (Boergesenia forbesii, Halymenia maculata and Palisada concreta ) did not possess the activity. Macroalgae which were tested for microbial activity, generally had antimicrobial against C. albicans and Shigella sonnei except E. coli. Results of TLC indicated that all of macroalgal had active compounds: terpenoid, glucose, flavonoids, phenols and amino acids but only few of them contained saponin, based on GC-MS test, Acrocystis nana, Zanardini was found to contain 1-Octadecyne (17.78%), Octadecanal (17, 83%) Dicholesteryl succinate (37.53%) and Cholestan-3-one, 4-methyl (26.86%) had the potential to be antimicrobial and antioxidant as well as bioenergy sources. Key words : Macroalga, High-Troughput Screening,  metabolites profiling
