Abstract

This article aims to describe and overview the existence of teaching English in Indonesia. English as a Foreign language gives different impressions from the other status, as L1 or L2. The materials were collected through reading, comprehending a number of references related to teaching, mastering English. The review was descriptively done and the result showed that the success of teaching English depends upon internal and external factors, namely: (1) verbal, numerical and reasoning abilities, (2) motivation, attitude, interest, aptitude, self esteem, perception and memory), (3) curriculum, personal and interpersonal interactions, (4) ability to adverse weakness into strength and constraint into opportunity, (5) spatial and socio-emotional setting, participant, end, act, channel, intention, norm and genre, (6) practice, enthusiasm and learning styles.

Abstract

The aim of this article is to deeply elaborate the significant value of the group work conducted by foreigners. Generally, participants practicing the speaking skill are done by local instructor(s) with small group discussion. The data of this observation was taken from the English training given to the local guides by five foreigners. The participants have already had basic skill in speaking English since they are members of Tourism Awareness Group in the respective villages. By applying the group-work, it turns out that the members felt more comfortable and confident, because they have intensive access to practice

Abstract

This paper seeks to describe some crucial importance of corpus and text processing. Corpus is a projection of how language is used by its speakers. Technology support has improved corpus for easier maintenance, made it space-saving, and it may electronically structure its data. The latest offers much freedom for corpus users to access and exploit it for language teaching, analysis or other specified tasks. This paper will demonstrate how to use open-access corpus on internet such as Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and British National Corpus (BNC). Besides how to use a corpus, another crucial importance that this paper seeks to describe is how to build a corpus. In this paper, the writer will use UNITEX, a corpus (text-based) processing software. This software will demonstrate steps of corpus building, ranging from text collection, annotation, electronic dictionary application to some natural language based operations ranging from pattern matching, concordance, to simple extraction. It will show how graph technology may outperform regular expression, a retrieval method exploited by other corpus processor, in terms of writing output

Abstract

This research aims to (1) describe writing skills of description essay at student learned with contextual approach at fifth grade student in group of six buleleng districts, (2) describe writing skills of description essay at student learned with contextual at fifth grade student in group of six Buleleng district, and (3) determine significantly differences writing skills of description essay among student learned with contextual approach and student learned with convensional approach at fifth grade student in group of six Buleleng districts. This research was experiment research with Post Test Only with Non Equivalent Control Group Design. The population of this research is fifth grade student in elementary school group of VI Buleleng district. Sample of this research is Kampung Baru 1 elementary school as control class and Kampung Baru 2 Elemantary School as experiment class. Sample was chosen with random sampling technique. Writing skills of description essay data of student were collected using testing method. The data collected were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The results of research indicate that (1) writing skills of description essay of control group student have average score of 46,93 with less categories, (2) writing skills of description essay of experiment group student have average score of 81,79 with very high categories and (3) there are differences of writing skills of description essay in significantly among the group of student who learned the contextual approach and group of student who learned the convensional approach (t result = 7,28 > t table = 1,671)

Abstract

This paper discusses about rubric in general and difficulties in testing speaking performance of students. In addition, this paper also elaborates rubrics as a tool to grade in speaking test including what type of rubrics that is the most appropriate, and what criteria of language features in speaking that should be scored. Last, analytical rubrics that are considered the most appropriate rubrics in speaking test are provided as an example.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know the increase of students speaking ability in French language lesson by using the technique of games. Subjects of research were language class semester students of SMA Negeri 1 Kuta Utara. Data collected by the test and the test is used to determine the students ability speaking the subject and used questinaire to know students perception of the game technique. Then the two types of data were analyzed by analysis of simple statistical percentage. The results of the first study of effective implementation of the technique game because there is a significant improvement of students skills in speaking of 62.21 (poor) before treatment becomes 82.58 (good) after the second treatment and perceptions of students towards a good and positive game technique methods. Finally, students were really active and enthusiastic to be able to see the presence of class and teach 94.58 on average. Opinions and comments on the activities of the most dominant student expression made by students achieve a 31.27 average

Abstract

The process of second language (L2) learning is strongly influenced by the factors of error reconstruction that occur when the language is learned. Errors will definitely appear in the learning process. However, errors can be used as a step to accelerate the process of understanding the language. Doing self-correction (with or without giving cues) is one of the examples. In the aspect of speaking, self-correction is done immediately after the error appears. This study is aimed at finding (i) what speech errors the L2 speakers are able to identify, (ii) of the errors identified, what speech errors the L2 speakers are able to self correct and (iii) whether the self-correction of speech error are able to immediately improve the L2 learning. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the majority identified errors are related to noun (plurality), subject-verb agreement, grammatical structure and pronunciation.. B2 speakers tend to correct errors properly. Of the 78% identified speech errors, as much as 66% errors could be self-corrected accurately by the L2 speakers. Based on the analysis, it was also found that self-correction is able to improve L2 learning ability directly. This is evidenced by the absence of repetition of the same error after the error had been corrected

Abstract

This study aims at describing the comprehensive result of analyzing some errors occur in student’s writing related to cover letter. The data was taken from expository writing assignment of 10 students of English Department, Udayana University. From 10 data, there were only 3 chosen as samples for analysis of this study. The data was collected by note taking technique. The data was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. In analyzing the data qualitatively, each letter was analyzed related to the points to be informed in a good cover letter. Quantitatively, there was a comparison of the data in the form a table. From the analysis, the result showed that the teacher should inform the students that they must write their personal information in the beginning of the letter. They also should describe their important skills related to the job, not explaining other skills not related to the job they are applying for. In addition, the most important thing that the student should give final request of a meeting or reply from the company they are applying for

Abstract

This article aims at describing the analysis result of messages and persuasion modes implied in the verbal and visual signs. The data was taken from a campaign video: World Vision Water - Meet Violet and the Other Children of the Zambia Project - World Vision". The data was collected by watching, note taking and the analysis was done by applying Saussure, Dyer and Aristoteles ideas. The result showed that the signs and message were expected to appeal for assisting people in Zambia Africa to overcome the clean water crisis

Abstract

The history has noted that the emergence of various approcahes towards foreign language learning is to search for the most effective and efficient way in teaching foreign languages that should match the development and change in the world. Before the Communicative Language Approach was widely known and considered by many as the best approach in foreign language teaching, there have also been other approaches around, which emerged in accordance with the development of particular period. Those approaches are Grammar Translation Approach, Dirext Method, Reading Approach, Audio Lingual Aproach dan Cognitive Approach. At the present times, with the advance of technology, language teaching seems to adapt itslef to that development. CALL approach as one of the computer-based approaches to foreign language teaching is considered to be effective to achieve success in foreign language learning
