Abstract

Background: Traumatic ulcers were injuries that occur to the epithelium and basement membrane, due to physical, mechanical, or chemical trauma. The healing process of traumatic ulcers was divided into three main phases, namely inflammatory, proliferation, and maturation phase. TNF-α as a proinflammatory mediator worked 2-3 days which later would be replaced by an anti-inflammatory mediator. This research aimed to determine the impact of bay leaf extract gel, which had a very high anti-inflammatory content, on TNF-α expression in accelerating the ulcers healing process.Method: This research method was an in vivo experimental laboratory research using a post-test only control design. The sample consists of 20 rats divided into four groups, namely, the control group on day 1, control groups on day 3, treatment groups on 1st day, and treatment groups on 3rd day. Rats were made traumatic ulcers on the lower lip mucosa and were given bay leaf extract gel in the morning and evening. The tissue was then made into a histological preparation and given immunohistochemical staining to see TNF-α.Result: The results showed the mean of cells expressing TNF-α in the bay leaf gel extract group on the 1st and 3rd days has P> 0.05. Independent T-test on 1st day dan 3rd group showed a significant difference in TNF-α expression in the control and treatment groups. Conclusion: The conclusion obtained in this study was bay leaf extract gel had a significant effect on the expression of TNF-α in the traumatic ulcers healing process.

Abstract

Background: Obesity and periodontal diseases are two highly prevalent chronic conditions in Indonesia. Both obesity and periodontitis have been recognized as a major risk factor for a number of systemic diseases. Obesity related to the etiology and progression of periodontal disease was well known, but a recent study describes the role of periodontitis to obesity.Purpose: The aim of this article to explain possible bidirectional relationship of periodontitis and obesity, so that dental practitioners may play an important role in management both obesity and periodontal disease.Literature review: The concept of infectobesity refers to obesity of infectious origin was accepted for the possible role of oral bacteria in the development of obesity. Excessive storage of adipose tissue in obese individuals leads to the release of adipokines which produce inflammatory. Relentless release of pro-inflammatory cytokines into the systemic circulation from adipose tissue in obese individuals and periodontal bacteria and its product provides a systemic inflammatory overload and may be a reservoir for bidirectional relationship of periodontitis and obesity. Maintaining good oral health is also fundamental for obese individuals. Dental practitioners should play important role in managements by educate their obese patients and refer the patient to physician and dietitian for a proper maintaining obesity.Conc1usion: There is a bidirectional relationship between obesity ang periodontal disease.

Abstract

Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is a material that can release fluoride to prevent caries especially in primary teeth. One of the developments of glass ionomer cement in the world of pediatry dentistry is resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC). The resin-modified glass ionomer cement were still maintaining the clinical advantages oforiginal material, such as fluoride realease, good compatibility and aestehetically. The mechanical properties of rmgic is more higher than gic. These materials have a better adhesion, higher moisture resistance, and a longer shelft life. This paper review aims to know the ability RMGIC as alternative restorative material for primary teeth.
