Abstract

For more than 30 years Indonesians were ruled under “Demokrasi Pancasila” favored by the Suharto administration. In-spite of the fact that Indonesia enjoyed economic stability, freedom of expression voicing an opinion not to the administration’s best interest was not tolerated. The nation knew only general elections where participating politicians were nominated by one of the three politicalparties. Publicexecutiveswereappointedbytherulingparty. Demonstrationswererepressed through various security regulations, if not by means of force. Being part of Angkatan Bersenjata Republik Indonesia (ABRI, Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia), the police depended heavilyonthemilitary’ssupportinrestoringpublicsecurity. One-waycommunicationwastheorder of the day. It was an easy life indeed for the public sector. Obviously, the monetary crisis which hit the country in mid 1997 brought revolutionary changes into the life of Indonesians too hard for the public sector to believe, never mind to accept. All of the sudden they saw political reform that introducedrealdemocracy. Theimplementationofregionaldecentralizationbroughtalotofconfusion and frustration. As public security became the sole responsibility of the police, the military’s duty shouldbehandlingdefensemattersandprovidingassistanceinemergencysituationsonly. Presidential electionwashelddirectly. Everythingissubjecttomassprotestand demonstrationstagedthroughout the country. Suddenly, the public sector had to adopt new values. They were simply not prepared for the new realities. Wanting to do things the easy way, top managements of the public sector realized that it needed to address the new challenge accordingly. Thus, empowering the internal stakeholders became their priority before communicating with any external stakeholder. How? Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI), Kabupaten Kebumen (a level II Administration) in Central Java, and Garuda (a State-owned airline) had their experiences for us to share.

Abstract

Using a critical discourse analysis method, this research aims to find out pattern and background of 10 newspaper national wide covering 9 political parties in 1999 General Election Campaign. There is a similar way to construct the parties as a music group rather than a broker of the clearinghouse of ideas. They represent the political actors as famous celebrities. For the media, they have different interests with one another in the news making for each political parties, such as ideological, idealism, political, and economic or market factors.

Abstract

Since the last 5 years, television in Indonesia has grown very rapidly. The more television stations, is also increasing production of television shows. Infotainment is one of the television program alternatives. The business side of media should not always be in conflict with ethics. There is constant relationship exists between economic and ethical factors. This research study about the commodification and structuration and associated with media ethics. The formulation of research questions about how the commodification and structuration infotainment programs on Indonesian television industry, and how the media ethics apply to these infotainment programs. In this research will study a causal relationship between structure and agency in the production and consumption of infotainment programs on the television industry in the Indonesia media ethics perspective. This research uses critical paradigm with qualitative methodology. Data collection techniques performed by depth interviews, observation, and analysis of the tape and paperwork. Data analysis using intertextuality. The results show, the television industry is the industry capital-intensive mass media so that more priority to profits than the public interest. A television program aired was not representative of the interests of viewers, including infotainment programs. Commodification of audiences who made the television industry is reflected through the rating. Rating is a tool used to offer the viewers to advertisers. Interplay between structure and agency interests occurs. From the perspective of media ethics, many violations committed by the journalist code of ethics infotainment of the Code of Conduct of Journalism also Broadcasting and Press Standards Program.

Abstract

Within man-woman relations contexts, polygamy is still pros and cons. Based on the Holy Qur’an, polygamy can be tolerated by additional note if they can behave equal and in just. But the others said that the practice of polygamy is manifestation to marginalize a woman. Polygamy can open the violence toward woman more frequently than monogamy at any level of aspects. Movie “Berbagi Suami” depicts this situation. It seems to illustrating that polygamy raises some problems for woman within the domestic life especially within man-woman relations contexts. Starting point from this view, this is to analyze the “Berbagi Suami” Movie by applying the Barthes’s semiology. By Barthes’s method, “Berbagi Suami” movie was scrutinized into two level of analysis. The results was found that Berbagi Suami Movie echoed the voice of critism through woman perspectives albeit not completely. This film also principally brought polygamy into discourse to audience and let them to judge the discourse.

Abstract

In this study I took a normative approach to examine the performance of the Indonesian Press in the era of decentralization. My approach included intensive observations on the Indonesia press system and survey among 330 Indonesian journalists and 55 head regencies and 55 regency’s secretaries. My analysis of the data and their context revealed the professionalism of Indonesian journalists. In their own opinion, the Indonesian journalists had a high level ofprofessionalism. However, the bureaucrats questioned their self-assurance. Therefore, it was difficult to determine the actual level of professionalism of the Indonesian Journalists throughout the many regions in Indonesia. Fortunately, the Indonesian journalists were free to report news according to the values in which theybelieved.Basedonthiscondition,theIndonesiapressownersno longer had to fulfill the political and commercial imperative functions of the press. The Indonesian press did not limit itself to report political news, but also cultural news to improve of life of Indonesian citizens. In conclusion, I consider that the Indonesian press has moved beyond its imperative function.

Abstract

This article examines some of the extreme negative content available to teenagers and young children in the market. Extreme negative values such as political of hates, violence and sex in some of the children computer and video games were made possible due to several factors such as lacking in regulatory structure, week policy implementation, rampant of illegal and uncensored materials. Computer and video games have been the subject of frequent controversy and censorship, due to the depiction of graphic violence, sexual themes, racism, advertising, eavesdropping, consumption of illegal drugs, consumption of alcohol or tobacco, propaganda or profanity in some games. Among others, critics of video games sometimes include parents’ groups, politicians, organized religion groups, and other special interest groups. Young children who see violent acts in movies, shows, and games may not be able to tell the difference between “make-believe” and real life. They may not understand that real violence hurts and kills people. When the “good guys” or heroes use violence, children may learn that it is okay to use force to solve problems. Younger children may even become more afraid of the world around them. Can self-censorship and ratings system help?

Abstract

This research was a qualitative research aiming at understanding the cultural differences and intercultural adaptation on partnership relation of core-plasma plantation in Tea Estate of Pagilaran Ltd Co, Indonesia. Collecting data were done by depth interviewing the worker’s core plantation and the plasma farmer concerning problems faced by both relationship. The results showed that culture of core plantation community tended to orientate to economical aspect with commercial basis, meanwhile culture of the farmers tended to orientate to group’s interest and to keep on their relationship among them with traditional habit and ecological sound. In relation to adaptation process, the two communities seemed to develop similar culture with capital interest. In this regards the similar cultures can be seen in two sides: from the side of core plantation, people working in the core plantation are come from similar culture with the indigenous farmers and the factory is also located in the farmer’s area. Meanwhile from the point of view of farmers, the similar culture as the result of cultural adaptation. Furthermore, the cultural differences shown by the core plantation and plasma farmer communities were due to the normative rules maintained by the company and also due to the different educational level and knowledge of both. To that respect, in core plantation community, the culture orientated to capital achievement implies the communication attitude on the business interest, where as the communication attitude of farmer community is more orientated to local interest using informal and interpersonal channel. Finally the communication differences in the two communities impede the process of organizational objective. And the communication attitude of the core plantation community is changed and unified with the communication attitude of plasma farmer.

Abstract

This research looks at the potrayal of the Indonesian government, particularly the law en- forcement institution that was responsible for the luxurious prison case of Artalyta and some other wealthy inmates. This issue came to surface when a sudden inspection was conducted by a newly established Judicial Mafia Eradication Task Force on Sunday, 10 January 2010 at Pondok Bambu Penitentiary. The discovery of the inspection was actually no big sudden as it has become a public secret. However, it still disgraced the image of the government since the media blew this issue up and eventually gained public’s attention. This research used a quantitative media content analysis method. This method used numbers as the basis of data interpretation and elaboration to the rel- evant theories. Precisely 53% of the total articles written contained unfavorable impressions of the Indonesian government. Government’s dishonest and corrupt were impressions appeared in the news. Nonetheless, some articles appeared favorable toward the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights as a result of strict action taken against corrupted officials.

Abstract

This paper is the result of study that focus to media practices and disinformation especially to political disinformation in Indonesia. There are four factors that push this study so it was done seriously. First, information has the important role that can shape and color the reality. Second, freedom of information and expression require the accountable and transparency. Therefore it needs the responsibility for implementation. Third, information can be controlled by any kind of interests. Fourth, the spread of information can be limited, stored and deviated. The production and reproduction of information can be designed in according to any differences interests. Finally the gap to access of informationcanmakeitmisusingandmisleading. Inthiscontextmassmediahassignificantposition to make disinformation through selecting and drawing to the events in the line with the interests. Mass media can be controlled by the owner, parties, NGO (Non-Government Organization), and any factions that involve the competition. Then disinformation took place when communications conflict show up through giving false and mistaken information.
