Abstract

This paper is about the heroism of the probe in a pop culture product is The Avenger movie depicting the ideology of western culture. The use of theory in a study of communication in the process of production of meaning, through the film as a product of pop culture that will depict heroism as an ideology of Western culture. The method used in this paper is a critical discourse analysis of Teun A. VanDijk. It refers to the three levels of discourse structure, namely the macro-structure, super structure, and micro structure. The results shown in this paper is the analysis by describing the mask of the hero who displayed is actually just a cover for attracting all mankind to enter the world of "American version"  which is constructed to a western cultural hegemony as the American position as god or king of the world.

Abstract

In Indonesia, the issue of corruption is still a serious problem. According to KPK, there were 670 corruption cases from 2004 to June 2017. The issue of corruption is often associated with the lack of an exemplary figure in Indonesia who is clean and has integrity. If it is connected with the world of film that often portrays the phenomenon of society, the scarcity of integrity figures makes many films that still present characters from the past such as in the film Sukarno. This research was conducted to find out how the representation of leadership values in Sukarno's film used the advanced analysis method and the theory of dramaticism. This study concluded that the values of leadership in Soekarno's film were shown in five important elements consisting of scenes, agent, act, agency, and purpose. Soekarno's leadership emerged in certain circumstances when Soekarno faced the Dutch the character of leadership changed aggressively, bravely, without compromise. When facing Japan, Soekarno using political and diplomatic strategies. Also included with the people, Soekarno is more featuring a harmonious, democratic and family concept.

Abstract

Nowadays social media is very much used by business people in doing business by doing promotions. Instagram is considered as social media that has high potential in offering an item or service. The advantage of promotion through Instagram is that the available range is very wide and unlimited because it uses online facilities. This study examines effective promotion strategies through Instagram social media in attracting audiences that are done by Javafoodie. This study aims to analyze effective promotion strategies by Javafoodie as foodstagram to attract khalayk Instagram. This type of research is descriptive qualitative based on New Media theory. Informants are Javafoodie owners, JavaFood managers and 3 consumers from Javafoodie. Data collection techniques in this study were interviews, observation and documentation. The author conducted a cross check with the informants namely the owner, manager and 3 audiences. In this study, the promotion strategy carried out by Javafoodie has 3 elements, namely information, communication and persuasion. To attract audiences or clients, Javafoodie is good at serving audiences such as replying to messages from audiences quickly, giving rewards and giveaway to clients and audiences to increase cooperation and loyalty. The researcher also found online marketing communication with the use of features (stories, photo uploads, captions, mentions, hastags, geotagging) and visual displays that could attract the attention of the audience. Javafoodie on social media is not only to provide promotional information solely, but also to tell what is given and what is sold. Promotions through Instagram social media are considered effective by Javafoodie as a promotional service for culinary products.

Abstract

Difable conditions in Indonesia is currently quite apprehensive. Lack of attention from the government and the community impacts on the lack of opportunities obtained in work, this condition makes the level of living welfare of the disabled is still low. One of the foundations that provide disabled opportunities for work is the Foundation for Persons with Disabilities / YPCM, an organization that accommodates the disabled / disabled handicap to work to make wooden handicrafts. The majority of the employees in the foundation are disabled and led by a chairman of a non-disabled foundation. The purpose of this study is to know the pattern of organizational communication between leaders and employees in the management of YPCM, as well as to know the obstacles in the pattern of organizational communication at YPCM. This research uses Fielder Contigency Theory with qualitative descriptive research method. The result of the research shows that the communication pattern of the leadership organization and the employees in the management of Yayasan Penyadang Cacat Mandiri Yogyakarta forms a unidirectional communication pattern, wheel communication, two-way communication pattern and there is communication pattern in media usage. In addition, the obstacles that occur are influenced by several factors, namely the low communication intensity between leaders and employees at YPCM, as well as the role of the Foundation Chairman who is lacking in becoming a master in the foundation of things that influence the communication between leaders and employees at YPCM. The pattern of communication made more placed Head of Production that plays an important role in the activities of the organization due to the lack of function of the Chairman of the Foundation as a leader in YPCM.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the behavior of social networking in receiving political information and involving in politics of the university students in lower northeastern region and to examine the relationship of the reflection after receiving information through the social networking and the democratic and power-oriented consciousness of the respondents. The effect of the political consciousness on political involvement and monitoring of politician’s work through the social networking are also the focus of the study. The research used a mixed-method of quantitative and qualitative approaches. A focus group was employed in the qualitative data collection from which 21 samples including chairman of the student were selected. The qualitative collected data were analyzed in order to that the results could be used to base the survey questionnaire. The questionnaire was then utilized to collect the quantitative data from 427 sampled students in eight universities. The statistics including frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson’s product moment correlation, and multiple regressions analysis were employed in data analysis. Receiving political information three to four times a week is found in mean frequency of the respondents. The behavior of the information recipients found not to voice their opinions and not to pass on the received information to other people on Facebook or other social networking is very close in proportion to those sharing their views and passing on the information to friends on the social networking. Only getting interested but not wanting to get involved in politics is the main reason of the samples. The reflection after receiving information results in most respondents saying they are able to understand, analyze, and identify facts of the received messages. And the ability in identifying of facts is related to the respondent’s democratic consciousness while the inability in identifying of facts is relevant to the power-orientation. Hypothesis test indicates the democratic consciousness having relationship with the positive effect of political involvement and monitoring of politician’s work whereas the power-oriented consciousness is found to be opposite in thatthe more the consciousness found to be power-oriented the less tendency to get involved in politics and monitoring of politician’s work of the respondents exists.

Abstract

In general, an effective communication is something so difficult to do. The communication process always involves cross cultural factors which would form a potential communication problems. These factors are, such as semantic problems, is that the same of words but having different meaning by the communicators that come from different cultures. Also, the problems are related with tone and intonation voices, perception, etc that come from different clusters of social and cultures.In the organization, the differences that come from different clusters of cultural society are also potential to become barriers of the effective communication which results in incorrect interpretation, evaluation and perception. More over if the boss suffered by “a hard to hearing disease”, as results of differences of position and class that owned by the boss, the barriers would be grow bigger and bigger. The other problems could be come from the Indonesian ethnic groups who embrace “high-context culture”, so that the information such as advice, complain, critic, etc., do not need to be submitted in words, verbal forms. In the high-context culture’s groups, information obtained by conclusion, behavior, and even in silences. More over if the process is related to the superior-subordinate position, so that the process of communication becomes an ineffective one. The boss is often seeing that the messages come from the subordinates is negative, not qualified, so it does not to be heard. If it happens it could cause anxiety and reluctance of subordinates to deliver the right information. Adverse impact of the organization is the existence of subordinate’s dissatisfaction and distrust of the superiors, and therefore contributes the overall organizational performance.This description reveals the barriers that exist in a cross cultural communication in order to achieve an effective organizational communication. The approach used is descriptive qualitative, which produces description of the behavior of certain individuals in an organization and analyzed from the point of view of a thorough and complete. The data obtained from several sources who have worked in an organization for a long time. The author uses the theory of triangulation of sources, methodological, and theories to obtain reliable data. The description of the findings in this paper is the need for cross-cultural approach to organizational communication to achieve an effective communication.

Abstract

This research is aims to know health communication strategy and inhibitions in the program of sex- ual and reproductive health (KesPro) performed by Sentra Advokasi Perempuan, Difabel dan Anak (SAPDA) in Yogyakarta. The theme of this research is Health Communication and using planning theory by Charles Berger. Qualitative methodology with descriptive approach is applied for this re- search.The results of research found that communication strategy on sexual and reproductive health for disable teenagers is a development of The P-Process, beginning with an analysis of the problems and research, strategy design and curriculum materials, distribution reproductive sexual health mes- sages through interaction and the use of media proponents, and the last is ongoing relationship with the audience as the monitoring measures. Health communication strategy of SAPDA emphasized on strategy of planning and designing messages, also interpersonal messages in communication with control of emotions, the media advocates, and review the message conveyed to achieve the goals of planing strategy. The barriers that exist are suppositions of taboo, clash towards the values and norms in the community, sign language vocabulary for medical term is limited, the absence curriculum stan- dards, the lack of human resources, and an introvert parent of disable teenagers.

Abstract

Things or events about politics are always attracted the attention of mass media to be news materials. The news about political actors in the mass media will form the self-image of the political actors in the eyes of the public Current media conditions are widely used as a political vehicle, made the news presented by the media is difficult to objective even the media prioritize the interests of this media. It can affect the image of someone who became the object of news. The formulation of the problem in this research is how the reception of the audience towards the image of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama through the news in mass media and what the factors that can affect the audience in the reception to the image of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama through the mass media. The purpose of this study is to determine how the reception of audience to image Basuki Tjahaja Purnama through mass media and also what factors affect the audence during the reception. Researchers used Stuart Hall’s reception analysis theory to know how reception of audience to the image Basuki Tjahaja Purnama in mass media. The results obtained are the researchers found two sources who are in the position of the dominant-hegemonic and and four others are in the position of the negotiated reading. Researchers did not find the audience included in the category of the oppositional reading. The conclusion of this study is that not always the theory of reception analysis proposed by Stuart Hall can produce three audiences positions. Its because, audience is dynamic, not static. Then, factors that influence the reception of audiences are four, media usage that includes the frequency of news consuming and media selection, religion, culture and fanaticism.

Abstract

Museums are to communicate their meaning to societies through their discourse.  Through the discourse, museums are to convey certain values, ideas or truths to societies.  The discourse of a museum embraces a power which can generate or instill a common sense and reinforce or give new insight to museum visitors.  Up to a point, the discourse of a museum can be in agreement or in contradiction with the existing knowledge and beliefs of visitors.  To understand museums is to understand the discourse of museums.  No two museums are the same.  It is the discourse of a museum that makes museums different and meaningful to societies.  No discourse is neutral.  “Museums are invention of men….They exist for the things we put in them (Silver, cited in Weil, 1990, p. xiv).”  The discourse of museums is subjected to the arrangement of mankind.  This paper is to look into the way museums garnish their objects and functions with specific concepts and assumptions to impart into the understanding of museum visitors of the discourses of museums.  Museums as a place of discourse are to influence the visitors’ perception and understanding of the world at large.

Abstract

Indonesia consist of many tribes which have variety of difference culture, Thus, Indonesian is usually called as multiethnic tribe. Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) noticed Indonesia has 1128 tribes with 746 local dialects which spread in 13.000 islands from Sabang to Merauke in 2011. Yogyakarta is usually called as mini Indonesia. Various comers both domestic also foreigner go into Yogyakarta. Therefore, this observation would see how’s individual with variety of ethincal background and interaction experiences gave the meaning of ethnical difference. This research used Symbolic Interaction. Theory, Identity Theory, Social Identity Theory and Communication Theory of Identity. Present research establish with sets of interview and observation on newcomers in Yogyakarta those are Batak, Sunda, NTT, Papua and China ethnics. The result described that : Indentity based on tribes ethnic is the most powerfull indentity compared to identity based on another ethnic. Ethnic identity formed powerful in family and environment which is teach certain values. New comer ethnic identity in Yogyakarta is more powerful because they live in new comer communities in same ethnic. New comers in Yogyakarta got meaning ethnic difference dominantly, i.e. as nation uniqueness and properties which is differentiate Indonesian from others. However, this situation makes Indonesia troubled with inter-ethnic conflict. New comers in Yogyakarta which is came from various ethnic being felt discriminatively yet. They are new comers from ethnic which is extremely different from physical, instance: skin color, hair type and physical posture. No one of new comers in Yogyakarta which is relatively similar with most ethnic or tribe in Indonesia feels discriminative. New Comers in Yogyakarta appraise that majority domination ethnic is Javanese which is dominate in economy and administration aspect.
