Abstract

Assessment is an integral part of an English teachers’ instruction since it enables them to visualize the extent of successful instructions. However, teachers might not pay much attention to their role to help their students improve their learning. Even, many English language teachers seem to focus more on traditional formats of assessment such as multiple choice, true false, matching type, etc. and pay little attention to the washback effects of these kinds of assessment on students’ learning. This paper argues that a traditional assessment has at least two fundamental flaws. There is a little chance to identify the students’ factual skills as it only focuses on formal assessment. In addition, it only focuses on achievement of high scores under test conditions. This orientation can be misleading to the nature of language instruction itself. Therefore, this research article explores the washback effects of performance-based assessment as a current trend in English Language Teaching (ELT) in secondary-school students’ learning. To investigate this issue, in-depth interview, classroom observation, and document analysis were employed as the data collection methods. The merits of the research are to indicate how to arrange performance-based assessment and to identify its washback effects in the students’ learning. The results conclude that performance-based assessment encouraged and motivated students to learn more. Students’ perception in this type of assessment was positive and they strived to be more successful in their learning. Keywords: performance-based assessment, washback effects, student learning.

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of a short-term error treatment (ET) on ILerrors, with specific attention to the learners’ ungrammatical items. The problemstates “what are the effects of a ET on the learners’ ungrammatical items?”, Aretheir ungrammatical items fossilized (in a sense that they are static in nature) ordynamic after the learners have been exposed to the ET. The data were the learners’ free compositions collected four times: prior and after the ET and two months afterwards. They were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The result indicates that the ET changed the state of the learners’ ungrammatical items. Theybecame so dynamic. At a certain period, some appeared; then due to the ET, some were destabilized, some were fluctuating, and others were still stabilized. New errors appeared as they started learning to use new grammatical items. The conclusion drawn from this study is that ET can change the state of the learners’ ILerrors; ET contributes to the destabilization process. Errors may persist momentarily but they can be destabilized. The ET still works on the learners who are at their post puberty. Thus, there is a great possibility for the learners to acquire complete TL grammar since their ungrammatical items are dynamic.Key words: error treatment, interlanguage, fossilized, stabilization.

Abstract

The nature of English as an International Language (EIL) has significant implicationsin the area of English Language Teaching (ELT). The current essay willreview the implications of EIL in three different areas: research on attitudes towardsvarieties of English, research on methods of improving non-native speakers’intelligibility, English teaching curriculum and materials for teaching pronunciation.Despite the debate of appropriateness of native speakers’ accent as modelsfor teaching pronunciation, the findings from most of the research on attitudestowards varieties of English suggest the students’ preferences towards native speakers’accent. In the mean time, the research on methods of improving non-nativespeakers’ intelligibility indicate the necessity of giving more emphasis on teachingsuprasegmental features such as intonation and stress to non-native speakers. Atthe curriculum level, although the experts have proposed some ideas of how EILshould be, the implementation of such curriculum might be difficult to realize insome countries. With regards to pronunciation teaching materials, many Englishpractitioners recommend the use of authentic materials that incorporate students’local culture in the classroom.

Abstract

BSTRACT In 404 Hijri / 1014 C, Andalusia of Cordoba su ered chaotic situations not only in politics but also in other segments of life, especially in sex. Free sex ourished and remained arguable. Based on the situation above, Prince Ubaidillah bin Abdurrachman bin al- Mughirah bin Amirul-Mu’minin An-Nashir, the grandson of Khalifah An-Nashir, asked Ibnu Chazm Al-Andalusia to write a love story with its complexity in a book. This research elaborates the genetic process of the text “Thauqul- Chamāmah l-Ilfah wal-Ullāf” that is considered a great work by either Arabians or non-Arabians. This work is also considered to be the rst work elaborating love and its complexity as its theme. Furthermore, this research disscusses the view of Ibnu Chazm Al-Andalusy about the concept of love (al-chubbun-nazhary) written in the text. The research adopts genetic structuralism theory with its emphasis on literary text (intrinsic analysis), socio cultural background (historic social reality observation), and the writer. The method is dialectic method, mutual relations between structures of a literary work (the intrinsic features of “Thauqul- Chamāmah l-Ilfah wal-Ullāf”), historic materialism (socio cultural background of Andalusia at the time the work was written), and the writer of “Thauqul- Chamāmah l-Ilfah wal-Ullāf”. Therefore, the “Thauqul-Chamāmah l-Ilfah wal- Ullāf” analysis techniques can be done in three ways: (1) revealing one of the text “Thauqul-Chamāmah l-Ilfah wal-Ullāf” structures by its love concept theme to build up the text and understand the whole structures, (2) revealing socio cultural backgroung of Andalusian people at the time Ibnu Chazm lived and was raised, and (3) revealing the writer’s social groups and their visions by their hipogram and transformation works. This Ibnu Chazm’s vision eventually becomes the embrio of the text “Thauqul-Chamāmah l-Ilfah wal-Ullāf”. The result of the analysis concluded by revealing the issue described in the second and third ways can be used to understand the concept of love in the text “Thauqul-Chamāmah l-Ilfah wal-Ullāf”. Eventually this research reveals that Ibnu Chazm’s direct observation to the people of Andalusia where he lived and was raised initiated the genetic process of the text. He formulated what he gained from his observation to be his vision. This vision became the base of “Thauqul-Chamāmah Fil-Ilfah wal-Ullāf”. The conclusion of the research is that according to Ibnu Chazm, most people relate loves to syahwat, free sex, porns, and things like that. However, hesees talking about love as expressing one’s tender feeling from the bottom of his heart to nd the truth of love but not to do disgrace and not to do something forbidden by the syariah because love exists in one’s heart and soul. Meanwhile, Allah SWT holds his heart. Love is about heart and heart belongs to Allah SWT. Therefore, according to Ibnu Chazm, the concept of love must be based on syariah. In another word, the theory of love, the cause of love, expressing love, mantaining love, meeting and “leaving” the one we love must be based on Al Quran and Hadits. Key Words : Andalusia, Political chaos, Free sex, Genetic structuralism, Dialectic method, Direct observation, Historic reality, Vision, The concept of love based on syariah.

Abstract

Javanese language is geographically spoken in wide areas; however, it seemsthat its speakers began to give up using it. This can be seen that the quality of itsusage among the young Javanese is deteriorated. This phenomenon mainly happensin the urban areas where the young Javanese tend to use Indonesian languagerather than Javanese language. They think that Javanese language is complicatedrequiring its speakers some regulations and etiquettes, thus they tend to use Indonesianlanguage that is considered as neutral and easy. If this language attitudeoccurs for a long period of time, the Javanese language will be abandoned by itsspeakers or die. The research sample is taken by restricted random sampling technique. They are 244 children and teenagers (between 5 to15 year old ) living insome housings in Kalasan regency.
