Abstract

Exchange rate measures the value of a certain foreign exchange from other foreign exchange's perspective. As the condition of economic changes, the exchange rate ma change substantially. The decrease of the value of a foreign exchange is called depreciation and the increase value of a foreign exchange is called appreciation. The equilibrium exchange rate will change along with the change of demand and supply. Factors causing the change of demand and supply curve among others are the amount of money supply, relative gross domestic product (GDP) and the level of relative interest rate. The research is aimed to analyze the influence of variables of Indonesian money supply, American money supply, Indonesian real Gross Domestic Product, American real Gross Domestic Product, deposits interest rate and LIBOR (London Interbank Offer Rates on SDR Deposit) both in short and long terms. One of the ways to analyze the influence of short term and long term is by developing the dynamic model. In this research, the analyzes of dynamic model was conducted with ENGEL-GRANGER ERROR CORRECTION MODEL approach which was developed by ENGEL-GRANGER (1987) based on GRANGER REPRESENTATION THEOREM.The ECM analyzes was chosen not only because of its ability to solve the problem of time series which is not stationer, and spurious regression and spurious correlation in the economic analyses but also its ability to discuss the consistence of empiric model with economic theory. Beside, ECM concept is also thought to be more realistic in observing the development of economics variables from the result of the analyzes during the time of observation. It was known that long-term exchange rate is influenced by Indonesia real Gross Domestic Product and the number of Indonesian money supply. The variable of Indonesian real Gross Domestic showed the significant result and the signal test was convenient with the theory. The variable which influence" short term exchange rate are the amount of Indonesian money supply, Indonesian real Gross Domestic Product, and Indonesian deposit interest rate. The three variables showed the significant result and the signal test was convenient with the theory.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the level of production, availability of food for the community and analyze the level of accessibility of food for households in villages in the district behind Weru Sukoharjo. The method of analysis used in qualitative research is descriptive analytic in order to approach the situation, structure, behavior and performance (SSPP). Use of this approach is based on the consideration of allegations that sensitive (vulnerable) of food a lot happening in the villages left behind. The results of this study indicate that the performance of food production especially rice or rice has increased significantly from year to year, but increased production has not been able to offset the growth in consumption of rice that grows higher than the growth in rice production. This shows that in terms of food availability, food security in the area of research is still very low.

Abstract

This study applies Almost Ideal Demand System models to examine Indonesia’s competitiveness as a tourist destination compared to two main competitor countries. The model was used to estimate the sensitivity of tourism demand from seven tourist-main market countries to price changes, the tourists’ total budget and global economic crisis. The model estimated result meets the assumptions of the demand theory: homogeneity and symmetry. The elasticity price shows that Indonesia is more competitive than Thailand among Australian and American tourists; while Indonesia is more competitive than Malaysia among American tourists. The research result also shows that the tourism price is the main determinant affecting the allocation of tourist expenditure in the three destinations.

Abstract

This study analyzes the effect of the exchange rate (IDR to US Dollar) on Indonesian CPO exports using Error Correction Model (ECM). The result of ECM analysis showed that exchange rate has a weak effect on Indonesian CPO export. These were due to several things; first, it takes a time to produce CPO. Second, importers are unaware of price changes. Third, policy factors, such as refusal of Indonesian CPO in USA and imposition of high import duty tariff in France. Fourth, price factor of CPO substitution goods and negative issues in the palm oil industry. Fifth, Indonesian exporters were less creative in marketing CPO products than Malaysia. ECM analysis also resulted that CPO production and CPO prices have no effect on Indonesian CPO exports, while the price of soybean oil and CPO production in the previous month has a strong influence on Indonesian CPO exports. Indonesian CPO export is inelastic.

Abstract

Ginger is a biopharmaceutical commodity which has a high economic value. However, a long ginger trading system makes the position of farmers as the producer have low bargaining power. The purpose of this research was to analyze the value chain and develop strategies for increasing ginger commodities in Semarang Regency. The method used in this research was quantitative descriptive using primary data with the number of respondents as many as 98 ginger farmers, 2 collectors, 2 wholesalers, 2 retailers and 6 key persons. The variables in this research included value chains, marketing margins, cultivation, post-harvest, marketing, institutions and policies. The analysis tools used were Value Chain Analysis and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The results showed that (1) Ginger farming in Semarang Regency was profitable with an average production or r/c ratio of 5,1. (2) There were three patterns of ginger trading in Semarang Regency, and their selection depended on the amount of production, transportation, facilities and capabilities owned by farmers. (3) The most prioritized criteria in the strategy of developing ginger farming in Semarang Regency covered marketing, cultivation, policy, harvesting and institutional aspects. Regarding these findings, suggestions or recommendations are given as follows: (1) carrying out harvesting process such as ginger powder independently. (2) forming ginger farmer groups to shorten the marketing chain of ginger, and increase the income of ginger farmers. (3) performing innovative digital marketing strategies.

Abstract

This paper discusses the influence of institutional quality on FDI stock inflows towards eight developing countries in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Institution in this paper is classified in four forms, namely legal, bureaucratic, politics, and economic institutions. This paper utilizes the method of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and panel data regression. After using PCA method to identify which variables hold the most importance, the authors then constructed an individual index for four institutions as defined before. These indices are then used for panel data regression. The result of this paper indicates that out of four forms of institutions, three institutions are found to be significant determinants. These three institutions are legal, bureaucratic, and economic institutions. Surprisingly, while bureaucratic institution has positive coefficients, the other two forms of institutions have negative coefficients, suggesting that FDI stock inflows towards developing countries in ASEAN are more likely to be motivated by weak legal and economic institutions.

Abstract

New indexes of environment and institutions are constructed following principal component analysis (PCA), while non-linear panel regression is employed. This study attempts to estimate a non-linear impact of GDP per capita on the environment following the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) Hypothesis for 97 developing countries during 1991-2014. The study reveals that a traditional EKC shows a U-shaped relationship under static panels, with both quadratic and cubic regressions. Interestingly, the inverted U-shaped occurs when a traditional EKC is estimated by the dynamic panels, with both quadratic and cubic regressions. Moreover, the EKC model is inverted U-shaped following static and dynamic panels, with both quadratic and cubic regressions under institutions. Indeed, the institutions significantly contribute to express EKC in developing countries. Policymakers should formulate environmental policies following climate change mitigation in the environmental sustainability framework, improve the quality of institutions, and increase macroeconomic management to anticipate external shocks such as openness, globalization, and FDI inflows.
