Abstract

Most Indonesian credit unions still focus on providing financial services, paying less attention to the roles of credit unions in education, empowerment and flourishing social solidarity of their members. This condition makes credit unions hardly compete with other microfinance providers in Indonesia. While threatening their sustainability prospect, this condition also reduces the capacity of credit unions to empower their members. Inspired by the maximalist approach and the Ledgerwood’s system framework, we suggest an integrative approach for credit union services that is empowered by the optimization of network collaboration.

Abstract

An understanding of the determinants of household food security is fundamental for an appropriate food security strategy. Taking the cases in Kulonprogo and Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta Special Region, we examine the effect of food diversification on the food security of poor households dynamically related to climate change. In addition, we investigate the impact of socioeconomic factors of human capital such as household age, education, household size, income, livestock, land ownership, and dynamic location on food security. There are four categories of dynamics of food security, namely always safe, improving, worse, and always food insecure. We use primary data with longitudinal surveys during El Nino and La Nina. The sample size is 195 households receiving the Family Hope program. To examine the relationship between livelihood assets and food security dynamics, we used Multinomial Logit Regression. The study found that food diversification significantly increases the food security of poor households. Besides that, income, maternal education, livestock, and land ownership can maintain household food security. Therefore, appropriate food security strategies can focus on food diversification programs, education, and financial sector interventions.

Abstract

The aggregate consumption pattern in Indonesia tends to be volatile due to economic, social, political instability, and disasters affecting consumption expenditure and social welfare. Relooking at public expenditure and its determinant with the 1992-2019 time series is the focus of current research. This review aims to find out the change of aggregate consumption in Indonesia with the Life-Cycle Hypothesis. The method used to authenticate the research was the Direct Error Correction Model. Using this approach, short- and long-term consumption estimation will be found that is useful to stakeholders. The result of the test shows there is a relationship between determinants and aggregate consumption in Indonesia in both the short and the long terms. In short term, inflation affects the change of aggregate consumption, while in the long term, GDP, interest rate, and inflation affect consumption. Estimation building on hypothesis testing is useful to policymakers, particularly for macro-credential adjustment.

Abstract

Women have an essential contribution to economic growth and development. However, according to data, the Gender Inequality Index (GII) is still relatively high in developing countries, so special attention should be paid to aspects of women’s empowerment, health, and participation in the labor market as an indicator in measuring GII. In women’s empowerment, women’s education and women’s literacy are thought to affect women’s labor force participation. This study aims to examine and analyze the effect of women’s literacy rates on female labor force participation in ASEAN countries from 2010- 2017. The method used to analyze the effect on the model is the static panel data method. The results show that countries with high female literacy rates also have high female labor participation rates. The results help economists and policymakers evaluate measures to optimize women’s labor market decisions and empower women by improving women’s literacy rates.

Abstract

This study is aimed to look at the effect of credit sourced from the banking sector on the MSE’s income in each Regency/City of the Bali Province. This is important because the inclusive development index in Bali Province tends to increase, but the standard deviation for each Regency/City shows an increase until 2017. This condition indicates that development is still relatively unequal between Regencies/ City. By using the data from the Economic Survey 2016 from BPS and processed using the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) method, the results confirm that credit recipients have significantly higher incomes than those who do not receive. Theoretically, additional capital accumulation will encourage faster economic growth in relatively poor areas compared to richer areas, causing convergence in the two regions. The results of the analysis show that MSE actors in districts with lower growth get higher additional income, thus enabling equitable development in Bali.

Abstract

Indonesia has the opportunity to increase the share of paper exports in the world due to the declining dominance of NORSCAN (North America and Scandinavia). The momentum is not only an opportunity for Indonesia, but also other paper exporters in Asia and Latin America. This research aims to analyze the competitiveness and determinants of Indonesia’s paper trade flow using secondary data in 2001- 2020 with 11 main export destination countries as objects using Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA), Export Product Dynamic (EPD) and Gravity models. The RCA analysis showed Indonesia’s paper has competitiveness in 11 export destination countries with diverse growth rates. This is in line with Indonesia’s paper market position as Rising Star in 5 countries which means that Indonesian paper commodities are in a market with high demand growth and market share. Gravity model estimates show that Indonesia and importers real GDP per capita, as well as the level of competitiveness positively affects Indonesia’s paper exports, inversely, export prices and dummy Technical Barrier to Trade (TBT) give negative impact. Based on these results, efforts to increase exports should be done by promoting paper to market with Rising Star and large economies such as China and USA as the priority choices.

Abstract

Banking sectors have allocated funds for micro and small-scale enterprises’ financing needs. However, the absorption of this fund is still considered low, particularly among the micro- and smallscale processing industries. The present study hence applied the multinomial logistic regression to understand the small industries’ loan decisions. The data were obtained from the 2019 Micro and Small Industry Survey and Financial Institution Statistics. It was found that income and profit did not exhibit a significant effect in both models and regions. However, the interest rate was found to have a positive effect in both models and regions, contradicting the Loanable Fund Theory. Collateral exhibited a positive effect in each region only in the first model. Meanwhile, other variables like age, financial record, business course, cooperative membership, business assistance (i.e., cooperative, noncooperative, and subsidized credit), internet access, and partnership exhibited different effects on small industries’ loan decisions in each model and region.

Abstract

This research aims to examine autocorrelation spatial analysis to see patterns of relationships or connections between locations (observations). In the study of the proportion of poverty in Mesuji District, it will provide important information in analyzing the poverty relationship between regions. Therefore, this research provides a spatial autocorrelation analysis in 2017. The methods used were the Moran's I test and the Local Indicator of Spatial Autocorrelation (LISA). The discussion shows a spatial relationship between the proportions of poor people between seven sub-districts in Mesuji Regency in 2017. In addition, the spatial distribution patterns will be clustered. Panca Jaya District has classified in one grouping of poverty called a low-low group. On the other hand, the high-low and low outlier categories were not found in the inter-district research area in Mesuji Regency. Finally, the regional development index variable has a negative and significant effect on the current population spacing without spatial concepts and concepts.

Abstract

This research aimed to study the role of the financial sector and foreign investment in increasing domestic production output. Where the increase in production output will increase the factors of production, one of which is labor. The data used in this study are annual time series data from the 2004 to 2021, and this study employed the Error Correction Model (ECM) approach to estimate the short-term effect and OLS to determine the long-term effect. The results showed that funding growth through the financial sector to the industrial sector in Indonesia has grown consistently since 2004 which has continued to encourage improved economic performance after the 1998 crisis. There is also a relationship between financial variables and fiscal policy on unemployment in both the short and long term. There are several ways to deal with unemployment both in the long term and in the short term, such as when an economic slowdown occurs. By increasing FDI, bank credit and funding in the the capital market, the private sector can continue to expand its business. This private expansion phase will increase the output of goods or services. With the increase in production output, employment will continue to be positive.
