Abstract

Development through National Strategic Projects (PSN) not only impacts economic growth and infrastructure provision but also has implications for the social lives of local communities in affected areas. This article aims to analyze how the implementation of NSPs is associated with the transformation of local communities’ identities as well as changes in socio-religious behavior in two case studies of development-transformed areas in South Sulawesi: the Makassar New Port and the Bantaeng Industrial Zone (KIBA). This study employs a library research method with a descriptive qualitative approach, drawing data from accredited journal articles, policy reports, and academic publications from the past decade. The data were analyzed using content analysis and interpreted through Stuart Hall’s framework of identity, Anthony Giddens’s theory of structuration, and Max Weber’s concept of rationalization. The results of the synthesis indicate that the implementation of these two PSNs is associated with a shift in community identity from a subsistence-communal basis toward a market-service basis, as well as a change in the form of religiosity from a communal-integrative character to one that is more individualistic and adaptive to the rhythm of industrial work, without eliminating religion’s function as a source of solidarity. At the same time, local communities are not entirely passive; they exhibit patterns of economic adaptation that go hand in hand with symbolic-cultural resistance in the form of strengthening traditions and revitalizing collective religious practices. This article contributes by offering a conceptual model of two-way identity negotiation in the context of National Strategic Projects in Indonesia and underscores the importance of incorporating socio-religious dimensions into the evaluation of the impacts of large-scale development.

Abstract

Mathematics learning can be challenging for junior high school students, particularly when learning requires them to understand the sequence of mathematical operations rather than simply obtain the final answer. This study presents MathDrive, an educational game that integrates mathematical problem-solving into an interactive gameplay structure. The game transforms mathematical expressions into sequential decision-making tasks, allowing students to engage with mathematical operations as part of the gameplay. A user evaluation was conducted with 29 junior high school students using a 20-item Likert-scale questionnaire covering five dimensions: Learning Experience, Step-by-Step Learning Support, Gaming Experience, Motivation, and User Interface. Descriptive statistics and Cronbach's alpha were used to analyze the responses. The results indicated positive perceptions across all five dimensions, with Gaming Experience receiving the highest evaluation, followed by Motivation, Learning Experience, User Interface, and Step-by-Step Learning Support. Although Step-by-Step Learning Support obtained the lowest relative score, its mean remained above 4.00, indicating a generally positive perception of the sequential learning mechanism. The overall Cronbach's alpha was 0.71, indicating acceptable internal consistency. These findings provide preliminary evidence that MathDrive can integrate mathematical problem-solving into an engaging game environment while maintaining positive student acceptance.

Abstract

The sustainability of traditional arts depends not only on the presence of younger generations, but also on learning spaces that enable artistic knowledge, cultural values, and ways of living to be transmitted continuously. Sacred Baris Dance in Batur Traditional Village illustrates this condition because learning takes place within the community’s social and religious environment rather than through formal classroom instruction. This article aims to analyze Sacred Baris Dance as a space for cultural education by examining the characteristics of non-formal learning and the intergenerational transmission of knowledge between senior and junior dancers. The article is developed from field findings presented in Chapter VI of a dissertation on the didactic process of Sacred Baris Dance in Batur Traditional Village. Data were analyzed descriptively and interpretatively by organizing evidence around learning experiences, the roles of participants, transmitted knowledge, and mechanisms of continuity. The findings show that the traditional space functions as an authentic learning environment that combines observation, demonstration, imitation, practice, questioning, and evaluation with ritual contexts. Transmission occurs intergenerationally, with senior dancers acting as carriers of knowledge and junior dancers as recipients who actively construct experience through participation. The transmitted knowledge extends beyond movement techniques to the relationships among movement, costume, properties, accompanying music, expression, and performance character. This non-formal learning develops cognitive, psychomotor, and affective dimensions while positioning the community as an educational environment. The findings indicate that preserving Sacred Baris Dance requires sustaining its learning mechanisms and intergenerational relationships, not merely conserving the visible form of the performance.
