Abstract

It is widely known that teacher-centered learning still dominates the current teaching and learning practice. This practice leads to an ineffective learning process since the students are not optimally engaged in it. Additionally, the teachers’ challenge is growing due to the implementation of online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. To address these challenges, this study developed a flipped classroom named the Plan, Flip, Assess, and Reflect (PFAR) model for teaching English at primary school. This model is able to transform the traditional learning into an interactive learning process by mixturing online and face-to-face learning. The PFAR model consists of four steps: 1) planning the lesson; 2) flipping the lesson; 3) assessing learning; and 4) reflecting upon learning. The steps in developing this model include 1) need analysis; 2) design and development; 3) validation and revision; 4) preliminary field test; 5) product revision; 6) main field test; and 7) final revision and dissemination. These processes lead to a production of the PFAR model. The result of validation revealed that the quality of the PFAR model was between good and excellent. They agreed that the PFAR model is beneficial for English teachers at primary school. The result of experiment also indicated that the PFAR model had a significant effect on the students’ English speaking skill. It significantly improved the students’ speaking skill. English teachers of primary school can directly adopt or adapt the PFAR model to create an effective and interactive learning process after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

The present research is intended to investigate the autonomous learners reliance on the web-based sources of material. Nowadays English class is not the only place to learn English. It is only one place amongst multitude of opportunities for using the target language. what the students learn from the teacher and what the students learn from the web-based learning of materials will be discussed in this study.A qualitative descriptive research were conducted to answer the research questions and obtain a better understanding of the complexities of the issues under investigation. This methodology best facilitates the construction of detailed, in-depth understanding of the learning jouney of the autonomous learners. How they construct the knowledge they got from the teacher (in-class learning) and web-based sources of material (out-of-class learning). The study reveals that students learn four points from the teacher which are (1) recognizing the concrete rules of the language, (2) acknowledging the level of difficulties in language learning, (3) practicing the knowledge and (4) building the social skills. They learn two points from the web-based sources of material that are (1) acknowledging the potential of web-based sources of material and (2) having the effective judgment and learning about the western culture due to the authenticity of the language. The teacher and the web-based sources of material should be a partner and complement each other. The teacher integrates the web-based sources of materials in the learning process to effectively teach the language. However, it is not the web-based sources of material which can make any activities a fruitful and thoughtful language learning experience for the students but it is the teachers themselves. It really depends on how the teacher selects the materials, designs the tasks and activities, integrates the media with other aspects of curriculum and guides the students during the learning process.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are: 1) to explore strategies for teaching Indonesian and English to integrate local languages, 2) to identify the factors that support the revitalization of local languages in multilingual learning, 3) to determine the perceptions of teachers and students towards the use of local languages in language learning. The results showed that Indonesian language learning at SMP Satap Kajang was carried out in accordance with the applicable curriculum, namely the K-13 curriculum. Meanwhile, learning English has been taught to students since grade I. Local languages have never been taught to students because there is no direction or order from the Bulukumba district education office about what local languages to teach, who teaches them, and how to learn local languages. The observation also found that SMP 1 Satap Kajang had the opportunity to carry out learning the Konjo language. This is supported by the existence of several native teachers who master the Konjo language (one science teacher, social studies, Indonesian, mathematics, religious education, and one English teacher) the teacher also welcomes if multilingual integrated learning is carried out besides the majority of junior high school students. is a native of Kajang who in fact speaks Konjo in general, although most 92% of students know Konjo language. This potential needs to be utilized for learning local languages, especially Konjo language, as an introduction to regional languages and prevent extinction.
