Abstract

Hypertension is one of major health problem that aff ect many people. Driver is one of the jobs that could cause hypertension due to the surrounding environment which support unhealthy lifestyles such as consuming excessive fat, smoking habit and susceptible to stress. The purpose of this research was to analyze the correlation between fat consumption, smoking habit, and stress with hypertension among drivers. This research was an observational study using cross sectional design. The samples were 74 male drivers taken by accidental sampling. The respondent was chosen around Juanda Airport Sidoarjo. The data were collected by measuring blood pressure using digital sphygmomanometer and interview using questionnaire, Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire, and The Workplace Stress Scale. The data then analyzed using Pearson and Spearman Correlation test. The results of this research showed that stress (P=0,000; r=0,830) had strongest correlation with hypertension among drivers compared to two other variables, fat consumption (P=0,000 ; r=0,689) and smoking habits (P=0,004 ; r=0,331). This study concludes that excessive fat consumption, smoking habit 11-20 cigarettes/day, moderate and severe stress levels can increase the risk of hypertension among drivers. Drivers should adjust to reduce consumption of fried foods, smoking habit, and stress with suffi cient rest ± 7-8 hours/day to prevent the occurrence of hypertension among drivers.

Abstract

Teenage phase is a critical period of psychosocial development. Adolescent eating patterns are formed in this phase. Household food security is among factors which may infl uence eating pattern. Adolescent who are exposed to food insecure condition tend to experience stress, which one of the coping mechanisms is overeating and may develop binge eating disorder. The purpose of this study is to analyze association between household food security status and binge eating disorder in adolescent. This case control study involved 74 adolescents aged 16-18 years and their parents in Semampir District, Surabaya, Indonesia who were selected randomly using simple random sampling. Household food security was assessed by using the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) and binge eating disorder is assessed by using Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale (EDDS). The association between household food security and binge eating disorder was analyzed by Spearman’s correlation test. There was an association between food security status (p = 0,001) and binge eating disorder. Further analysis showed that adolescents at risk of food insecurity were 5,625 times more likely to experience a binge eating disorder. This study recommends to increase food security through economic empowerment of housewives and socialization about coping strategy for both parent and adolescent.

Abstract

School children in rural and urban areas need attention in terms of education and health. This study was aimed to analyze diff erences in visual acuity, nutritional status and motor function among school-age children in rural and urban areas. This was an analytic observational with cross-sectional design. As much as 57 students at SD Sokanegara and Kedungbanteng elementary school was recruited by purposive sampling method with inclusion criterias including fi rst grade of elementary school student in healthy condition. Visual acuity data was examined by using Snellen Chart, nutritional status data by anthropometric measurements of body weight and height was calculated using the BMI for age index, while motor function was obtained by Carpenter Motor Ability Test measurements. Data was analyze using the Mann Whitney test. The results showed there were diff erences in visual acuity (p= 0.001) and nutritional status (p= 0.027) in rural and urban school children, while motor function did not show any signifi cant diff erence (p= 0.783). It is recommended to increase outdoor activities as a protection against visual acuity

Abstract

Providing supplementary food or drink for pregnant women with chronic energy defi ciency (CED) is one form of specifi c interventions to increase the nutritional intake of pregnant women which is quite eff ective. Supplementary drink made from local food are very appropriate to be developed by considering its nutritional and sensory aspects. This study aimed to develop and to analyze instant powder drink made from yellow sweet potato and red kidney bean as an alternative supplementary drink for pregnant women with chronic energy defi ciency (CED). This study used a completely randomized factorial design with two factors and two replications. The ratio between yellow sweet potato and red kidney beans as the fi rst factor and the addition of maltodextrin as the second factor. Results showed that from 6 formulas, formula with ratio 3:1 of yellow sweet potato and red bean also the addition of 5% maltodextrin (F5) was chosen as the best formula. Based on acceptance test results, instant drink was accepted by pregnant women with percentage of acceptance 89.5% of overall sensory characteristics. Nutrient content analysis showed that instant drink contained 423 kcal of energy, 3.75% of water, 1.52% of ash, 14.28% of protein, 9.92% of fat, 70.53% of carbohydrates, 7.27% of dietary fi ber, 14.4 mg of β-carotene, and 74.22% of protein digestibility. This product can be suggested as an alternative supplementary drink for CED pregnant women because it was acceptable by sensory and the nutrient content had fulfi lled nutritional content requirements of supplementary food for CED pregnant women

Abstract

To improve the human capacity in West Nusa Tenggara (WNT) province, a community-based intervention called Generasi Emas NTB (GEN) has been implemented in 2014. One of the programs is to ensure children’s nutritional and developmental wellbeing. However, there remains limited information regarding the situation of nutritional and developmental status of the children living in the GEN villages. This study aimed to assess the nutritional and developmental situation of under-fi ve years old children living in Tanjung Karang district, WNT. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Tanjung Karang district, one of the GEN villages in WNT, through integrated post service (posyandu). Children who met the sampling criteria were screened for their nutritional status using anthropometric measurement and developmental status using a prescreening developmental questionnaire (KPSP). A total of 638 children completed the demographic baseline assessment and were enrolled as participants. Most of the children were in the age group 7-12 months (19.1%) and 25-36 months (19.4%). The proportion of children who were underweight, stunting, and wasting were 19.4%, 32.2%, and 8.0%, respectively. The fi ndings for developmental screening showed that 12.2% children had dubious development and 3.1% (20/638) children were suspect of having a developmental delay. The proportion of under-fi ve years old children in Tanjung Karang district who were underweight, stunting, and wasting were still high but lower than the provincial average prevalence in 2017. Children who were found to have a doubtful result and suspect to have a developmental delay need to be evaluated further.

Abstract

Unhealthy eating habits among Indonesian occur not only in adults, but also in adolescents. Adolescence is a transitional period and most easily aff ected by the surrounding environment. Environmental infl uences such as peer infl uence and family eating habits are dominant factors for food they choose to consume. This study aimed at analyzing the relationship of peer infl uence and family eating habits on healthy food choices in overweight adolescents in Surakarta. It used observational study with cross sectional approach. Random sampling was used to determine its samples, consisting of 96 respondents. The data of peer infl uence, family eating habits, and healthy food choices were collected through structured questionnaires. They were analyzed by using the Pearson Product Moment statistical test. The results indicated that there is a relationship between peer infl uence and healthy food choices in overweight adolescents in Surakarta (p = 0.014; r = -0.250); and there is a signifi cant relationship between family eating habits and healthy food choices in overweight adolescents in Surakarta (p = 0.011; r = 0.258).

Abstract

Stunting is a condition in which a child’s height is shorter than other children of the same age. Exclusive breastfeeding is a factor that can aff ect the stunting prevalence in Indonesia. In addition, specifi c nutritional intervention through multi-micronutrient supplementation called Taburia is given to prevent stunting. This study was aimed to determine the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding practice and taburia supplementation in children aged 24-60 months in the working area of Sidotopo Wetan Health Center, Surabaya City. This study used secondary data obtained from a child monitoring survey database from the Surabaya City Health Offi ce in the working area of Sidotopo Wetan Health Center. The samples size was 141 children aged 24–60 month, and the statistical analysis employed was the chi-square test. The results showed that the stunting proportion was 54.60%. There was a relationship between exclusive breastfeeding practice and the stunting incidence (p = 0.047). Children who did not provide exclusive breastfeeding had a higher risk 1.97 times of stunting. Taburia supplementation also had a signifi cant relationship with stunting incidence (p = 0.016). Children with non taburia had a higher risk 2.35 times of stunting. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the prevention of stunting can be overcome by maximizing exclusive breastfeeding practice and complementary foods, also the allocation of taburia

Abstract

The occurrence of low birth weight (LBW) can be reduced by optimizing gestational weight gain. However, the gestational weight cannot be monitored properly as there are a lot of mothers who receive Antenatal Care (ANC) less than four times as recommended by WHO. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether early third trimester gestational weight could predict the incidence of LBW among newborns. A cross-sectional study was conducted using secondary data from Anny Rahardjo Maternity Clinic’s registry. A total of 278 eligible data of pregnant mothers who visited the clinic in 2017–2018 was chosen as study subjects. The mean for weight of birth was 3112.77 ± 384.40 g and early third trimester was 63.52 ± 11.07 kg. The prevalence of LBW was 3.2%. Early third trimester weight was found as the dominant factor of LBW after controlling the length of gestation. Early third trimester weight is signifi cantly correlated with LBW (p < 0.001). The optimum cutoff point was 59.8 kg with AUC = 0.68 (CI 95% = 0.52 – 0.83), sensitivity 67%, specifi city 63%, positive predictive value 5.66%, and negative predictive value 98.2%. The early third trimester weight is able to predict LBW with optimal cutoff value 59.8 kg.

Abstract

Healthy snacks are snacks that are clean, safe, healthy, and nutritious. The food safety of snacks sold in school environment cannot be guaranteed, so it can cause food poisoning among children. The importance of food safety knowledge can be used to prevent food poisoning from contamination such as biological, chemical, or physical contamination. Based on several studies, healthy snacks education can improve children’s knowledge and attitudes that related to the selection of healthy snacks by using various media. The purpose of this literature review is to determine the eff ect of nutrition education on knowledge and attitudes of elementary students in the selection of healthy snacks. This literature study included the articles which used experimental study with pre-test and post-test in elementary students as the subject. There are ten selected articles that were included in the review. The results indicated that nutrition education about healthy snacks could improve knowledge of students in selecting healthy snacks. Moreover, there were 6 articles showed that nutrition education could improve the attitudes of students in the selection of healthy snacks as well. Nutrition education can infl uence the knowledge and attitudes of elementary students in the selection of healthy snacks.

Abstract

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have to eat a gluten-free casein-free diet due to their special condition. Casein is protein that contained in milk and milk-based product which are source of calcium. Their special condition make children with ASD have a low bone-mass than other children. Modifi ed Cassava Flour (MOCAF) and white millet fl our are free gluten food sources which have rich calcium that is needed to increase nutrient quality in soft chewy cookies. This study was aimed to determine the eff ect of MOCAF fl our and white millet fl our combination on acceptability and nutritional value of free gluten and free casein soft chewy cookies. This study was true experimental study with complete randomized design. This study used un-trained panelist including ASD children(7–11 years old (25 panelists) and their parents (25 panelists). There were 4 formulas in this study consisted of 1 control formula (F0) based on 100% wheat fl our, and 4 treatment formulas which were combination of MOCAF fl our and white millet fl our with a percentage ratio of combination F1 (0%:100%) ; F2 (50%:50%) ; and F3 (75%:25%). Kruskal Wallis statistical test results showed there were signifi cant diff erences of aroma, color, texture, and taste between each formula. Result of acceptability and nutritional value showed F3 as the best formula. Each 60 g soft chewy cookies F3 contains 176,4 mg of calcium which fulfi ll 18% of calcium adequacy for 7–11 year old children. Gluten-free casein-free soft chewy cookies with combination of MOCAF and white millet fl our are suitable as an alternative snack for ASD children.
