Abstract

The goals of this research are to describe the implementation, advantages and disadvantages, and the solution of disadvantages in teaching writing Recount text by using Small Group Discussion. The research uses descriptive qualitative research as approach and type of research. The sources of data are social situation, participant or informant, and document. The technique of collecting data uses observation, interview, and documentation. To know the validity of the data, the researcher uses triangulation. The technique of data analysis are data condensation, data display, conclusion and verification. The result of the research are (1) The implementation of Small Group discussion in teaching writing Recount text divided into (a) Pre-activity which covers greeting, praying, checking attendance list and explaining the purpose of the learning, (b) Whilst-activity covers the explanation the stages of the technique, (c) Post-activity include reviewing and making resume of the material, (2) The advantages are easy to implement in the class and can be understood well by the students, effective to teach types of text, increased participation, make student more intimate with their friend, (3) The disadvantages are student need more times to write, they are difficult in translate the word, disability of implementing correct structure makes some of students did not participate, students’ motivation of writing is still low, take long time because there are four stages that should be done by the students, (4) The solution of the disadvantages are teacher gives clear and simple explanation about the material, asks students to bring the dictionary, explains the role of each member of group clearly, makes the activity into simple one, gives additional time, student aware to other students, and teacher gives a bit of joke or humour and motivation in the process of learning. Based on the result, the conclusion of this research are suitable with the lesson plan, observation, and teaching process in the class. The suggestions are presented for teacher should have variety of strategy in teaching writing, students are suggested to increase their vocabulary, and other researcher are suggested to fulfil the need of the knowledge from other point of view.

Abstract

This research deals with analyzing psychopathic behavior in Gone Girl movie. It is reflected through the main female character, Amy Elliott Dunne. The research problems are to find the characteristics of Amy’s psychopathic behavior and to find the causes of her psychopathic behavior. In this research, the researchers use qualitative research method. The main data is Gone Girl movie. It is supported by secondary data such as books, articles appropriate with this research. In collecting the data, the researchers use documentation technique. Content analysis is chosen by the researchers to analyze the data. The results of this research are described as follows: 1) Amy has great obsession about herself that leads her to commit crimes. She senselessly slits the throat of the victim only by using a cutter. She does manipulative act and exposes sexual appeal to the victim. Amy also makes public opinion that her husband kills her. In the end, she creates herself as innocence for the murder of Desi, her ex-boyfriend. She twists the story that she has been raped and kidnapped by him. 2) Amy’s psychopathic behavior is believed to be affected by her surrounding, especially her parents. Amy's family is full of manipulative acts. Amy’s parents utilize Amy to be an amazing person who inspires many people by creating a storybook entitled "Amazing Amy" with excessive improvisation

Abstract

The purposes of the research are to describe the procedure of the uses of TMM game, to identify the advantages of using TMM game, and to know disadvantages of using TMM (Talk a Mile a Minute) game in teaching students’ speaking skill. The result of the research shows that the applications of TMM (Talk a Mile a Minute) game can make students easier in understanding the lesson in speaking skill. The procedure of talk a mile a minute game in activity of teaching speaking by using talk a mile a minute game for the tenth grades at SMK PSM 2 Kawedanan, Magetan at in schooling year of 2013/2014 is appropriate with the lesson plan and syllabus which teacher makes before. After using TMM game, there are some the advantages and the disadvantages of this game. The advantages are, to help students in teaching speaking skill, to increase the student’s motivation, as an innovation in teaching process, and this game can make students enthusiastic in teaching learning process. The disadvantages of this game are that the students only make a joke with their friends, make class noisy

Abstract

This study aims at describing the depiction of four women in Creole community which is applied as the contestation in “The Awakening” and describing the reasons of Creole women’s character contestation which related to particular purpose in that time. The writer uses the descriptive qualitative method as research design. The data is collected by using documentation. The data sources in this research are divided into two parts, primary and secondary. The primary data is novel of The Awakening. The secondary data is taken from the history of Creole society in Louisiana, journals, and the other sources from the website as the information. The base of this research is focused on Pierre Bourdieu’s concept. This concept is used to discover the problem formulation through the sociologycal view which influences the way of thinking from four Creole women. The result of this research are a) the depiction of three women reveal that women can support economic as businesswomen and even artist. Meanwhile, the other one is submissive and worship to husband due to keep the balance in the household. b) the reasons of three women reveal that the men’s authority is not important due to their basic background that support their economic through their proficiency as their manifestation to exist in the society. Meanwhile, the other one relies on the man to support her economic and a man as symbolic power. Based on the finding, the distinctive ideology as genetic structuralism which is connected to economic , politic and social background influence  their way of thinking to get the opportunity.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the correlation between mastery on the simple present tense and writing descriptive paragraph. The method that was used in this research was a quantitative research. the subject were 42 students of the fourth semester nursing program of STIKES Bhakti Husada Mulia Madiun in the academic year 2017/2018. Simple present tense and writing descriptive paragrap test were used as the instrument for collecting the data of this research. Pearson’s Product Moment Formula was used to correlate both mastery on simple present tense (variable X) and the ability in writing descriptive text (variable Y). The result showed that there was a statistically significant correlation (0.756) is higher than the r value of significant level at 5 % (0.304). Theoretically, Null Hypothesis (Ho)is rejected and Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. The suggestion are: the students should improve their mastery on simple present tense because it can improve their ability in expressing activities in writing.

Abstract

This research is conducted to explain the implementation, the problems, and the solutions of problems in the Implementation of Sandwich Graphic Organizer in Teaching Writing to the Tenth Grade Students of SMAN 1 Jiwan in the schooling year of 2016/2017. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. The participants of the research are the English teacher and students of X-A class of SMAN 1 Jiwan. The research uses purposive sampling technique. The techniques which are used to collect the data are observation, interview, and documentation. While, the techniques of the data analysis are: data condensation, data display, and conclusion and verification. The results of this research are the teacher prepares syllabus, RPP, and the papers of picture Sandwich Graphic Organizer. The steps are pre-activities, whilst-activities, and post-activities. Otherwise, some students get difficulties in managing their time, some students make mistakes in using V2 that is used in writing recount text, some students get difficulties in expressing their ideas from Indonesian to the English language because of minimum of vocabulary, and some students forget to write a capital letter in the beginning of the sentence and full stop in the ending of the sentence. Then, the solutions of problems in the implementation Sandwich Graphic Organizer are: the teacher explains again about the steps of using technique Sandwich Graphic Organizer, the teacher divides the time of the students when the students should write the outline and when the students should develop their outline, the teacher gives the command for the students to open their dictionary to check the list of verb 2, the teacher asks the students to open their dictionaries when they are difficult in translating their ideas, and the teacher asks the students to pay attention to the punctuation when writing.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the racism occurs from verbal language by using Selma movie as the object. It is based on insight from Yule’s (1996) illocutionary act theory to analyze the type of Martin Lurther King’s utterances and Hymes’ (in Wardhaugh, 2006) speaking ethnography theory to analyze the context behind Martin Lurther King’s utterances. The writer finds commissive act (8%); expressive act (44%); and directive act (48%) as the illocutionary act which be used by King, and some datum of speaking ethnography without genre because genre can be found in written text only. The writer finds unity, solidarity, nationality and movement as the meanings which be categorized into racism’s representation from analysing the type and context.

Abstract

Teaching and learning English in junior high school has the goal of focusing the students' ability to use English in every skill. One of the skills in this level is writing. Writing as one of four skills in language is a difficult one, especially for Junior High school. The purposes of the research are to describe the implementation of CSIW strategy, the advantages and the disadvantages in using CSIW strategy, and the students' response to implementation of CSIW strategy in teaching writing. The researcher offers CSIW strategy to solve those problems by improving the students' writing skills. The implementation of CSIW strategy in teaching writing for the eighth grade students at Mts Al-Karomah in the school year of 2015/2016 has three steps, they are pre-activity, whilst-activity, and post-activity. The results of implementing these three activities in class are the students become more directive in writing recount text, they show, the reason, how to write in their story well and the topic clearly. The students are also more active and concentrate on the learning process. Based on the result, it suggested that the teacher should use a strategy when they learn English especially in teaching writing. The students should make the draft/organization of written text before exploring it into their writing. It can help them to do exercise.

Abstract

Madiun is a regency in East Java which is known as Kampung Pesilat. Persaudaraan Setia Hati is an organization was made by Ki Ngabehi Surodiwirdjo, Persaudaraan Setia Hati is a way of living and a life’s path. That is not a fighting sport but a fighting art. A fighting sport is a struggle with another and a fighting art is a struggle with oneself. Persaudaraan Setia Hati is a combination of the two brotherhood and founded on five basic principles, brotherhood/ friendship, sport, self-defense, art and culture, and spiritual development which represent in the symbols of the Persaudaraan Setia Hati emblem. Thus, the researcher uses socio-cultural theory which appear register forms. The objectives of this study are to describe the register, context, social meaning of register used by Persaudaraan Setia Hati. The approach of this study is qualitative research and the type of the research is case study because the researcher can identify the register forms that used Persaudaraan Setia Hati and social meaning in society. The researcher shows the data on screenshot of the original conversation each member which is taken from Facebook group Persaudaraan Setia Hati. Analysis technique flow model of this study are data condensation, displaying data, and concluding. The result of this study are (1) there are some register words found in the data that categories the context as follows: the participants are about the relationship between each member, the setting describes from the place where the conversation happened, the topic are about daily life experiences, the function as the motivation and self reminder for each member (2) social meaning are about brotherhood/friendship, sport, self-defense, art and culture, spiritual development.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the Opus Dei organization inside The Da Vinci Code movie and Opus Dei in reality. It is due to the controversies and much efforts to defend the truth against  the  movie.  This  research  uses  descriptive  qualitative  method.  The  researcher  needs  a sociology of literature by Alan Swingewood to get evidences the effect and goals of the author in creating a story. The analysis reveals that the representation of Opus Dei inside The Da Vinci Code confirms as dangerous  organization, destructive mission, a killer, and corrupted members.  It is contradiction facts far from reality that Opus Dei concerns on the serving people to keep devotion of Christian. Opus Dei is the open legal organization doing charity for better living which has mission and independent finance sources. The conclusion show that the controversies functions to get the movie’s rating raised since it deals with the mass demand in popular literature. The evidences confirm that the representation of Opus Dei inside The Da Vinci Code are negated from the reality.
