Abstract

Currently, Archipelagic Islam (Islam Nusantara) is a familiar term to Indonesian people. In addition to giving a dystinctive color to Islam, it also promotes diversity, by adapting Islamic values into the local culture. Islam Nusantara brings forward moderate understanding of Islam by accepting differences, promoting well-being, tolerance, mutual respect and peace. On the other side, the puritans do not regard the culture as a national identity based on textualist interpretation of the Qur’an ultimately leading to violence, coercion, infidelity, misleading and intolerance. This paper will examine what Islam Nusantara means and what kind of Islam that it promotes and how it plays a role in safeguarding the unity of the Republic of Indonesia from the puritan groups who are easily to label others as infidels for not practicing Islam as found in the Middle East. Keywords: Islam Nusantara, Nusantara, Puritans, Local Culture

Abstract

This study attempts to discuss feminism and ideological criticism of science. Feminism is a movement that fights for the rights of oppressed women as a result of injustice and inequality, both in terms of economics, social, politics, education and others. In Indonesia, it was spread by Raden Ajeng Kartini, who fought for the women, especially in the field of education. Feminism movements in the world are various; liberal feminists, social feminism, radical feminism, Marxist feminism, ecofeminism, Islamic feminism and so on. These feminisms are different in analyzing the causes of injustice and the goals and forms of their struggle. Although having different opinions, they contain the same core struggle, i.e awareness of injustice against women in the family or community. This study focuses on feminism and ideological criticism of science. In the past time, men andwomen did not get the same education rights. Women could only get low education and only work indoors, while men received high education and obtained jobs as they wanted. Thus, men have a broader knowledge of science, they could create sophisticated technology to ease their burden. Keywords: Feminism, Ideology Criticism, Science

Abstract

Through tourism, especially cultural tourism, cultural dynamics turmoil also occurs in tourist destinations. This is because there is an inevitable tug-of-war between culture on the one hand and tourism on the other hand. Cultural traditions represent the expression of tradition and tourism represents modernity (economy). In general, cultural traditions have a tendency to preserve and tourism as the industry wants to maximize its business activities for profit. This research is more focused on the study of cultural practices which a focus on the discussion of Roland Barthes’s semiotics on the traditional art of jaranan. The results of this study can be concluded that Barthes’s semiotic analysis of the commodification of culture in jaranan art experiences a variety of forms and dance offerings that be conceptualized as profit-making. The concept of withdrawal is very clearly seen by the shift in religious magical meanings from sacred to profane in every performance. Keywords: Jaranan, Semiotics, Commodification of Culture

Abstract

This article describes al-Ghazālī’s thoughts about Sufism which became a synthesis of philosophical considered extreme tasawwuf and literal and rigid Islamic jurisprudence. This paper argued that Al-Ghazālī attempted to mediate the situation of religion among Muslims who messed up because of tasawuf deviating from the principal teachings of Islam and Islamic jurisprudence and being used by the authorities as a measure to punish the Sufis categorically without considering the truth of their teachings. In his Iḥyā ‘Ulūmudīn, al-Ghazālī leans to his biggest thoughts about Sunni’s Sufism. It teaches theology such as tawḥīd, makhāfah, maḥabbah and ma’rifah, from which the concepts of tawbah, ṣabr, tawakkal, zuḥūd and riḍa came from. This article found that al-Ghazālī’s sufism is closer to practical tasawuf , which is built upon the Qur’ān and the Ḥadīth. al-Ghazālī also wrote his personal experience in his masterpiece. Keywords: Tasawuf, Islamic Jurisprudence, al-Ghazālī

Abstract

Chinese Muslims have a cultural identity as a double minority. In Islam, they are a minority within their ethnic religion and remain a minority among other ethnic groups in Indonesia. This ethnic group embraces Islam mostly because of religious conversion. The aspect of religious conversion makes ethnic Chinese come to Islam. This study aims to find the expression of Muslim in Surabaya, who are using social action tools asa manifestation of their faith to gain trust from the mainstream while maintaining their cultural identity as Chinese so as not to experience alienation in their communities. This study found that Chinese Muslim’s social theology in Surabaya serves as an articulation of cosmopolitan Islam that is successfully integrated into an inclusive Chinese identity. This also confirms that being a good Muslim is not in a binary position with being a pure Chinese. Besides, the theological vision of Chinese Muslims is expressed not only by maintaining its cultural background, but also through social movements that are inspired and based on Islamic dogmatic teachings that emphasize human values. Keywords: Social Theology, Chinese Muslims, Existential Problems

Abstract

Abstract

This article discusses the role of higher education institutions in Yogyakarta in bolstering Pancasila’s public image through academic and non-academic approaches. Through various activities to strengthen Pancasila, three universities such as UIN Sunan Kalijaga, UGM, and UNY used academic formulas such as Focus Group Discussions which involved several groups to socialize the importance of implementing Pancasila in the life of the nation and state. In addition, there are other non-academic media such as Pancasila petitions and the use of social media as a way of improving Pancasila so that the millennial generation can recognize the ideology and historical values of Pancasila. To explain the progress of the three universities, the writer presents two questions;how is the role of science played by universities to improve Pancasila? What attempts are made by tertiary institutions to inspire academic and non-academic views? This study used a qualitative approach with the form of field research (field research) which took place in Yogyakarta. In my view, what the three universities did, became an“academic jihad” which was carried out periodically and represented the seriousness of universities in Yogyakarta to uphold the principles of Pancasila in people’s lives. Keywords:Pancasila, Jihad, Universities,

Abstract

It is no longer surprising that Indonesia is still susceptible to finding many cases involving faith. Whether it is the entry of radicalism, which results in the rise of a derogatory stereotype toward Muslims in Christian circles, or even disputes among Muslims over who is the most right in his teachings. As stated in the Indonesian Ulama Council’s East Java Province declaration, which summarizes the findings of their tausiyah on greetings using other religious greetings. This assertion has sparked debate in a number of circles. Students, in particular, whowork in a group or association that promotes interreligious harmony. Numerous them expressed reservations about the MUI comment. Given that students are considered to be a part of civil society, who would remain quiet if anything disturbs and impairs the community’s human rights? As such, this study seeks to ascertain the role of students as civil society in preserving religious believers’ unity in the face of disputes about how to express greetings from other religions and their relationship to the study of living hadith. Since the researcher exploreshistorical events and takes a qualitative approach, this study is classified as historical research. After all, the researcher obtains data from carefully chosen informants. The findings of this study indicate that students of different religions are still attempting to preserve peace in a variety of ways, one of which is by not objecting to the greeting of other religions, as Islam contains a wealth of information about the sense of tolerance, both in the Qu’ran and the Hadith. Keywords: Civil Society, MUI, Living Hadith

Abstract

Conflicts in the Islamic world are primarily caused by disagreements between scholars’ views and thoughts. This divergence of opinion stems from scholars’ interpretations of the Qur’an and Hadith, which serve as a guide to life and religion for Muslims. This condition has existed since the Prophet Muhammad’s demise, specifically during the time of the Companions. Until then, it occurred on a continuous basis until now. This divergence in thought and perception eventually results in different forms of religious polarization, with the ulama separated or divided into various classes. The Muslims were then separated and divided into sects as a result of this situation. As mentioned by Ibn al-Jawzī, the disputes that erupted in the Islamic world and eventually resulted in religious polarization arose as a result of divergent interpretations of religious scriptures, which were bolstered by a sense of community or group fanaticism. Additionally, unscrupulous scholars’ variations caused the ulama to break into two classes or attitudes. Among them are the ulama who really care for Islam. The second category is different scholars, or scholars who are more concerned with their own expertise and with the interests and benefits of their own community than with the interests and benefits of the general public. Keywords: Conflict, Polarization in Islam, Ibn al-Jawzī
