Abstract

The prevalence of dental caries in preschool-aged children is relatively high, and it can impact their growth, development, and quality of life. It is necessary to reduce the risk of caries by assessing and managing its risk factors. One effective method is CAMBRA ( Caries Management by Risk Assessment) that can reduce the risk of dental caries. This study aims to obtain risk factors dental caries based on CAMBRA in preschool children. This study was an observational cross-sectional study with a sample of 57 preschool children in ABA Niten Kindergarten in the Yogyakarta. A total sampling method was used, the dependent variable was the number of caries and the independent variable were adopted from CAMBRA, namely: white spots, dental fillings, dental plaque/gingival inflammation, low salivary flow, salivary pH, and deep fissures. Data were collected using a checklist and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The result were 46 children (80,7%) had dental caries, 41 children (71.93%) had teeth with white spots, 32 (56.14%) had no dental plaque, 34 (59.63%) had low salivary flow, 40 (70.18%) had a low salivary pH , 42 (73.68%) had no dental fillings, and 30 (52.63%) had deep fissures. The Chi-square analysis revealed that white spots, dental fillings, dental plaque, low salivary flow, salivary pH, and deep fissures were significantly associated with the dental caries (p<0.05). white spots, dental fillings, dental plaque, low salivary flow, salivary pH, and deep fissures are related to the occurrence of dental caries.

Abstract

Various physical and physiological changes occur during pregnancy. These changes occur as the body prepares for birth and fetal development. These changes can affect systems in the body that affect the physiology of body parts, including the oral cavity. The increased risk of tooth decay occurs as a result of fear of brushing teeth due to gum conditions that can be inflamed during pregnancy. This study aims to determine the accumulation of Fusobacterium Nucleatum bacteria in the oral cavity of pregnant women on the risk of LBW (Low Birth Weight). This type of study is a prospective observational analytical ohort conducted to determine the accumulation of Fusobacterium Nucleatum bacteria in the oral cavity of pregnant women on the incidence of low birth weight. Samples were taken using the accidental sampling method to obtain 12 pregnant women in their third trimester, who were then periodically examined for the condition of their oral cavity and a 20 ml saliva sample was taken during the last week of pre-partum check-up. There was no significant relationship between the accumulation of Fusobacterium Nucleatum bacteria in the saliva of pregnant women and the incidence of LBW babies. This is because other factors contribute to the incidence of low birth weight (LBW), such as nutritional status, oral health practices, socioeconomic status, infectious diseases, and other external factors. In addition to prenatal checkups during each trimester, oral examinations are also essential. Plaque control and tartar cleaning are essential for pregnant women. Routine oral examinations are essential.

Abstract

Halitosis is a significant oral health concern with considerable psychosocial consequences, particularly among dental students who are expected to uphold exemplary oral hygiene as future professionals. This study investigated the association between halitosis and quality of life among dental students at Universitas Prima Indonesia. A cross-sectional design was employed, involving 31 dental students selected through purposive sampling from August to September 2025. Halitosis was objectively assessed using the Tanita Breath Checker and categorized into three severity levels, whereas quality of life was evaluated using the validated Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) questionnaire. The findings indicated that 51.6% of participants experienced moderate halitosis, while 58.1% reported moderate impairment in quality of life. Statistical analysis revealed a significant correlation between halitosis severity and quality of life (p = 0.001), demonstrating a clear gradient relationship in which greater halitosis severity corresponded to poorer quality of life. Notably, all respondents reported inadequate tongue-cleaning and mouthwash use despite their dental training. These findings underscore a critical paradox in dental education: future oral health professionals exhibiting suboptimal oral hygiene practices that contribute to halitosis and, in turn, negatively affect their well-being. The study highlights the need to integrate targeted oral health promotion initiatives into dental curricula to address both the clinical and psychosocial dimensions of halitosis, thereby enhancing the professional competence and overall well-being of dental students.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Replacing two adjacent anterior teeth, especially canines, poses significant biomechanical and esthetic challenges. The canine region plays a critical role in occlusal guidance and receives substantial lateral forces, making the design of fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) in this area inherently complex. Anterior esthetic demands, occlusal function, and connector integrity must be carefully integrated into the prosthetic plan. Objective: This case report aims to demonstrate an integrated prosthodontic design approach for a complex fiveunit zirconia FDP replacing maxillary teeth 22 and 23, focusing on biomechanical stability, esthetic proportion, and material selection. Case Report: A 39-year-old female presented with missing teeth 22 and 23. A five-unit FDP with two pontics and three abutments (teeth 11, 21, and 24) was planned using monolithic 4Y-TZP zirconia. The abutment selection followed Ante’s Law, and the connector was designed with an oval crosssectional area of 13 mm² to accommodate increased functional stress. A modified ridge-lap pontic was selected for esthetics and hygiene access. Surface treatment before cementation included airborne particle abrasion, cleaning with NaOH-based agent, and application of 10-MDP primer prior to dual-cure resin cementation. One-week follow-up showed excellent soft tissue response, stable occlusion, and high patient satisfaction. Conclusion: Restoration of adjacent canines using 4Y-TZP zirconia FDP demands precise design strategies. This case illustrates how an integrated approach ensures biomechanical reliability, esthetic outcome, and long-term success in complex anterior prosthetic rehabilitation. Abstract

In this study, the cranium of adult rats was used to examine the craniofacial anatomical markers of rats (Rattus Novergicus). This analysis helps determine key points for diagnosis. Markers on the rat skull were determined to establish measurements at two specific points. One way to validate craniofacial growth is to use Micro-Computed Tomography (micro-CT) as a marker of craniofacial growth by looking at craniofacial differences before and after a certain time. Micro-CT as an alternative diagnostic tool, especially for difficult surface areas to reach or measure. Sample analysis was performed and measured with the DataViewer Application version 1.6.0.0 64-bit. CTVox version-3.3.1 64-bit is used to display 3D visuals. After adjusting the data range, the reconstruction results are 30-255 (color range 0-255). The soft tissue of lower density is reduced to expose the hard tissue fully. The machine used is the Bruker SkyScan-1173 High Energy Micro-CT. Determination of the growth of the cranium in mice can be seen at the dorsal suture, Conca nasalis, and sphenoid base (cranial base). The uneven surface of the skull makes manual measurements difficult and impossible. However, this micro-CT method makes determining landmark points more detailed and has high accuracy or validity. This makes craniofacial geometric measurements more accurate and measurable. Micro-CT is an alternative diagnostic tool for measuring cranial growth in Rattus Novergicus, which cannot be achieved with 2D x-ray methods.

Abstract

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder with multisystem involvement that can affect periodontal tissues, leading to gingival inflammation. While global studies have employed various clinical parameters to assess this association, specific research comparing gingival inflammation between SLE patients and healthy controls in the Indonesian population remains limited. This study aimed to investigate this association by using the Gingival Index (GI) in a cohort from Surakarta, Indonesia. This comparative analytical study involved 100 participants (50 SLE patients and 50 healthy controls). SLE diagnosis was confirmed using the 2019 EULAR/ACR criteria. Gingival inflammation was assessed with the Löe and Silness Gingival Index. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare GI scores between groups, and Spearman's correlation was used to analyze the relationship between GI and group status, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. The SLE group exhibited a significantly higher median GI of 0.5 (IQR: 0.0–1.0) compared to 0.1 (IQR: 0.0–0.2) in the healthy control group (p < 0.05). Spearman's correlation confirmed a moderate association between group status and GI scores (r = -0.379, p < 0.05), indicating that the SLE group had higher gingival inflammation compared to healthy controls. These findings indicate that SLE is significantly associated with increased gingival inflammation, highlighting the interplay between systemic autoimmunity and periodontal health. The Gingival Index may serve as a useful clinical marker for systemic inflammation in SLE, which underscores the need for collaborative care between rheumatologists and dental professionals. Abstract

Conventional final-project supervision in higher education is often ineffective, poorly documented, and difficult to monitor in real time. This study aimed to develop SIBIMA, a web-based information system for final-project supervision that supports communication, documentation, and monitoring of student supervision activities. This research used a Research and Development approach with the Waterfall model, consisting of needs analysis, system design, implementation, and testing. Functional testing was conducted using black-box testing, while the user interface and user experience were evaluated by 62 respondents, including program administrators, supervisors, and heads of study programs. The developed system facilitated title submission, supervision, revision documentation, scheduling, and structured monitoring of final-project progress. The evaluation indicated that the system functioned as intended and was well received by users across the main supervision workflows. SIBIMA has strong potential as a digital solution for improving the effectiveness of communication, supervision documentation, and monitoring of final-project preparation.

Abstract

Periodontitis is periodontal tissue inflammation caused by periodontal pathogens, including Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.gingivalis). The incidence of periodontitis in men and women differs significantly, especially in the severity of periodontal tissue destruction, if it overrules smoking habits and poor oral hygiene. However, the information was inadequate and debatable. This study aimed to compare the effect of P. gingivalis on periodontal tissue destruction in female and male rat models, showing increased MMP-8 expression and decreased collagen density. This study was a laboratory experiment using male and female Wistar rats. Each gender of animal models was divided into two groups: control and periodontitis. The periodontitis group induced P. gingivalis every three days for 19 days in the distopalatal and distobuccal gingival sulcus of the mandibular first molar. After the final induction, they were euthanized, and their mandibles were removed for histological observation by immunohistochemistry to determine the expression of MMP-8 in periodontal tissue and Picrosirius Red to determine collagen density. Expression of MMP-8 was observed at 400x magnification using a light microscope, whereas collagen density was observed at 400x magnification; the images were analyzed using the ImageJ application. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and a multiple-comparison test (p<95%). The results revealed that male and female periodontitis models showed significant differences in MMP-8 expression and collagen density (p<0.05). Briefly, P. gingivalis caused periodontal tissue damage in female and male periodontitis models, whereas the female periodontitis model experienced more periodontal tissue damage than the male.

Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension is a chronic medical condition that has a broad impact on overall health, including oral health. Periodontitis is one condition associated with hypertension. Pharmacological interventions for hypertension also have a significant and often overlooked impact on patient’s oral health, yet no systematic review has presented data on the correlation between oral health status and hypertension. This systematic review aims to identify the correlation between oral health status and hypertension. This systematic review aims to identify the correlation between oral health status and hypertension. Methods: Inclusion criteria comprised English-language research articles published within the last five years reporting on the relationship between oral health status and hypertension, sourced from PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Scopus in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Results: A total of 11 research articles were identified involving hypertensive patients aged 20–73 years with oral health issues, consisting of 7 cross-sectional studies, 3 cohort studies, and 1 case-control study. All articles reported a significant correlation between hypertension and oral health conditions. The relationship between oral health and hypertension is a complex, bidirectional systemic pathophysiology involving both systemic inflammatory pathways and the effects of pharmacological interventions. Conclusion: There is a significant association between hypertension and oral health conditions.
