KARSA is a peer-reviewed national journal published by Institut Agama Islam Negeri Madura. It has been nationally accredited SINTA 2 since 2017 by Ministry of Research Technology and Higher Education of Republic Indonesia. It is published twice a year (June and December). It publishes articles of research results, applied theory studies, social issues, cultural studies, and Islamic culture issues. The aim of KARSA is to disseminate cutting-edge research that explores the interrelationship between social studies and (including) culture. The journal has scope and seeks to provide a forum for researchers interested in the interaction between social and cultural aspects across several disciplines. The journal publishes quality, original and state-of-the-art articles that may be theoretical or empirical in orientation and that advance our understanding of the intricate relationship between social science and culture. KARSA accepts manuscript with a different kind of languages are Indonesian, English, Arabic, or French.

Abstract

Analisis wacana kritis sering diterapkan untuk menganalisis isu-isu kekuasaan, ideologi, dominasi, dan strategi dalam sebuah teks. Penelitian ini bertujuanuntuk mengidentifikasi proses transitifitas teks berita dengan pendekatansistemik fungsional. Analisis data dilakukan berdasarkan teori analisis wacanakritis dan tata bahasa fungsional. Analisis teks berita dari sudut pandangtransitifitas membuat kita dapat mempelajari bahasa, terutama bagaimanaproses-proses teks berita itu dihasilkan dan difungsikan. Metode yangdigunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah analisis wacana kritis dan pendekatantata bahasa fungsional. Sumber data yang digunakan dalam penelitian adalahberita berbahasa Inggris di Jakarta Post berjudul Roots of the North MalukuConflict. Berita ini terdiri atas 40 klausa, 13 paragraf, dan 602 kosakata. Hasilpenelitian menunjukkan bahwa proses transitifitas dalam teks tersebutditemukan sebanyak 14 proses material, 3 proses mental, dan 3 proses relasional.Secara keseluruhan, proses transitifitas dalam teks tersebut adalah 20 klausa.Sedangkan proses verbal, proses eksistensial, dan proses behavioral tidakditemukan dalam penelitian ini. Totalnya, terdapat 20 klausa yang tidak menunjukkan ciri proses transitifitas.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore and describe the existence of pecel pithik in the tradition of Osingese tribe of Banyuwangi and its impact on the social economic welfare of the very community. Qualitative approach method was used to achieve the purpose of this research. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, note taking, and recording. Data analysis method operative in the study was descriptive qualitative method with thematic content analysis. This study has evinced that pecel pithik is a cultural asset of Osingese society, which is rooted in fundamental traditional agrarian values with selamatan, originally presented in rice fields in the form of tumpeng before harvest in the hope of good harvest and blessing. This was done to improve the society’s welfare and elevate their degree. Today, pecel pithik presented at rituals (selamatan) such as barong ider bumi and tumpeng sewu (bersih desa). Pecel Pithik has now been a potential of socioeconomic capital for regional progress as a resource of economic development to improve societies’ welfare.

Abstract

Abstrac This article traces patron-client relationship of Madurese both from socio-historical point of view and its contemporary progress. As an imbalance social-exchange relationship, in terms of patron-client relationship, second side (client) much highly depends upon the first side (patron). This had been experienced in Madurese social history during the native governmental period of time. The government was classified into two major classes; ruler class (patron) and farmer class (client). The former is fully in authority to take control either economic or politic potencies, however, the later transacts labors to the first side. Both side is connected by a bribe (upeti) systems—percaton, apanage and daleman. In current progress this relationship becomes more acquaintance, it covers economic and politic relationship. The success of Trunojoyo, the king of Sumenep's inherit, against the Mataram domination had been supported by Madurese people that had previously tightened to the system. Today,  patron-client relationship in Madura is reflected in the relationship between the head of village, as the owner of percaton,  and the staff as well as people, as the percaton manager. The other is well-described in the relationship of ship owner and pandega (fisher) in fishing. Once the relationship is set up, it directs to diadik relation, a two in one relation which is more personal and long lasting one. Kata-kata kunci Patron-klien, percaton, apanage, panembahan, rakyat, daleman, kepala desa, juragan, pandega, dan diadik.

Abstract

Abstrak: Adat Istiadat dalam pernikahan Suku Bugis telah mengalami pergeseran nilai seiring perkembangan zaman dan pengaruh era globalisasi. Tanggapan miring pun tidak terelakkan, namun hal tersebut seyogyanya disikapi secara arif dan bijaksana. Untuk itu, perlu reinterpretasi makna adat pernikahan suku Bugis yang sesunguhnya, mengambil nilai-nilai positif pada setiap prosesi adat pernikahan, serta menambahkan nilai-nilai baru yang sesuai dengan semangat dan prinsip adat istiadat suku Bugis. Abstract: Marriage custom among the Bugis people has shifted in values due to globalization and modernization. Consequently, negative response was inevitable. However, the response should be addressed wisely. This article is aimed to re-interpret the meanings of marriage among the Bugis. It is also to address some positive values in every stages of customary marriage, new meanings and values which in turn restoring the spirit and principles within the marriage custom.   Kata Kunci: Adat, pernikahan, budaya, Bugis, siri’.

Abstract

Fenomena kalebun bebini’ (kepala desa perempuan) pada masyarakat Madura yang semakin merebak, tidak jarang hanya sebagai penerus dan melestarikan kekuasaan yang sebelumnya dimiliki oleh suami, bapak atau bahkan kakek mereka. Sehingga tulisan ini bermaksud mengungkap: Pertama: bagaimana konstruksi budaya Madura tentang peran dan posisi perempuan sebagai kalebun. Kedua: bagaimana mekanisme yang dilakukan oleh kaum laki-laki dalam menempatkan perempuan sebagai penerus kekuasaan politik pada kekuasaan desa (kalebun). Ketiga, bagaimana relevansi potensi dan kompetensi perempuan dalam posisinya sebagai Kalebun. Selanjutnya tulisan ini akan menggunakan empat pendekatan Pertama: pendekatan subyektif, dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui alasan atau motif serta apa yang sebanarnya yang diinginkan perempuan ketika menjabat sebagai kalebun, dalam faktanya posisi kalebhun yang diperankan tidak lebih dari keinginan outside view. Kedua, pendekatan relasional, yaitu melihat pola relasi yang terbangun dalam keluarga dan masyarakat anatara laki-laki dan perempuan. Pada konteks ini proses menjadi kalebun bebhini’ telah memunculkan relasi dominatif dan subordinat melalui public transcript. Ketiga, pendekatan struktural, institusi kalebun dimaksudkan untuk membuat tatanan masyarakat yang bermartabat, dikotori oleh praktik-praktik politik kekuasaan yang tanpa makna dengan membolehkan berbagai cara, termasuk menjadi perempuan sebagai obyek keberlangsungan kekuasaan. Keempat, tulisan ini sebagai seruan moral untuk membangun kesadaraan kolektif untuk mengedepankan politik makna, dengan menjunjung integritas dalam kepemimpinan.

Abstract

The present paper connects nature with religious understanding in regard to Christianity and Islam. Many studies show that religious beliefs and practices were shaped and reshaped, to many points, being influenced by a specific geographical environment. So, the paper aims to focus how nature serves continuously in generating human thought, feeling and experience especially with respect to religions. By correlating some verses of the Bible and the Quran alongside some interpretations by religious scholars, the paper attempts to explore why religious understanding of nature seems significant for preventing the natural environment from further degradation caused by uncontrolled human activities in nature. In so doing, it will be an effort to enrich the current discussions relating to religions and natural environment.

Abstract

Abstraks: Tulisan ini hendak mengurai bahwa tradisi keulamaan di Indonesia sangat erat kaitannya dengan proses pembentukan identitas kebangsaan. Dengan mengajak kita kembali ke pesantren, tulisan ini mengusulkan beberapa langkah untuk mengangkat kondisi bangsa dari keterpurukan melalui upaya kembali ke pesantren. Orang-orang pesantren harus kembali percaya diri bahwa mereka punya sejarah, di mana bangsa ini punya hutang historis karena amal saleh (darma bakti) pesantren untuk kelangsungan hidup bangsa ini, masa lalu, masa kini dan juga di masa mendatang. Kembali ke pesantren juga berarti bagaimana orang-orang pesantren mengisi kembali serta memperkukuh pilar-pilar kebangsaan: Pancasila, UUD 1945 NKRI dan Bhinneka Tunggal Ika. Salah satunya dengan menggalakkan kembali program-program kaderisasi anak-anak pesantren untuk segenap wilayah perhatian bangsa ini ke masa depan, politik, ekonomi, kebudayaan, intelektualitas, dan hukum. Selanjutnya, kembali ke pesantren juga bisa dipahami sebagai wadah gerakan ulama untuk pembenahan umat dan upaya reformasi total terhadap segenap agenda-agenda bangsa yang sudah melenceng jauh dari cita-cita kebangsaan. Abstract: This paper tries to describe that scholar tradition in Indonesia is closely related to the formation of national identity. By referring to pesantren, this paper proposes several steps  to improve the condition of the nation through returning to pesantren. Pesantrens have to be proud that they have a great history, in which the nation has a historical debt for good deeds (devotion) of pesantren for nation survive, from past, present and future time. Returning to pesantren means how the people of pesantren replenish and strengthen the pillars of nation: Pancasila, the Constitution 1945, NKRI,  and Unity in Diversity by encouraging re-regeneration programs for students of pesantren for future, politic, economic, culture, intellectual, and law. Next, it is a forum of Islamic scholars to do total reformation on the national agendas that have strayed far from the ideals of nationhood. Kata Kunci: Pesantren, tradisi, ideologi, ulama,

Abstract

Lembaga sosial sebagai asosiasi berperan dalam meningkatkan produktivitas masyarakat suku Using. Peran lembaga sosial dalam hal ini lembaga seni  berkaitan dengan pengembangan budaya sebagai bentuk kearifan lokal masyarakat suku Using. Namun peran tersebut belum optimal dalam menunjang produktivitas masyarakat suku Using karena kurangnya peran dan dukungan dari pemerintah daerah setempat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membuat model pembinaan lembaga sosial dalam peningkatan produktivitas masyarakat suku Using. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan pendekatan fenomenologis. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi, wawancara, diskusi, dan dokumentasi serta dianalisis dengan model analisis interaktif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan lembaga sosial yang ada di masyarakat Using belum sepenuhnya mendapat dukungan dari pemerintah daerah. Meskipun pemerintah daerah sudah membuat beberapa kebijakan untuk memberdayakan lembaga sosial namun belum sepenuhnya dirasakan oleh lembaga sosial. Oleh karena itu perlu ada pembinaan terhadap lembaga sosial khususnya lembaga seni agar mereka terpacu untuk meningkatkan produktivitasnya.

Abstract

This study discusses the tradition of Ngababali at the Negeri Besar Village in Way Kanan, which is a local wisdom that until now is still practiced by the local village community, even many outside visitors who take part in the ngababali tradition. The tradition of praying for something to the grave or sacred tomb with offerings and so on. The people believe what is intended and asked for beings who are not visible or given to those who have abundant assets to be given is always easy to get sustenance or ask to be kept away from distress or when getting a disaster. The purpose of this study is to describe the religious practices that are carried out in a tradition that is still thick in that society. Qualitative analysis methods are descriptive and to facilitate data retrieval using accidental sampling. The results of the analysis show that the community productively finally places the religion and tradition of ngababali together namely religion into a belief and tradition of ngababali into a practice and belief which is then placed in the social environment forming a belief and togetherness and directing a unity to keep religion as the the main. This proves that the traditional ngababali process continued to use the Islamization process eventhough the local culture served as a bridge to the trust of the local community so that it became a productive social form.

Abstract

In the world of science, the institutions of education have become the foundation of educators to teach science for the next generation. Pesantren (Islamic boarding school) is the oldest traditional educational institutions, which still exists in Indonesia until now. It is in this institution in which islamic scholars transform Islamic knowledge to society. Globalization has influenced the world of edu-cation, wherever it comes from, including pesantren.This paper discusses the role of boarding schools in educating students so that they not only able to face the challenges of globalization, but also guard their identity as islamic students (santri), in three main discussion: first, how the existence, essence and role of the boarding school in facing the changing times are; second, how the boarding schools face the future; and third, as an example, how pesantren of Tanwirul Hija in Sumenep, Madura changes to face the challenges of globalization. This study concludes that in order to deal with global challenges, pesantren has been continually maintaining the essence of the islamic boarding school, while at the same time appreciating the new educational methods that lead to the inclu-siveness and gender awareness. By standing on two feet, the boarding schools, including Tanwirul Hija, not only exists but also will be able to create new cadres who are ready to compete with other competitors from any different institutions, both in the islamic knowledge and general sciences.
