Abstract

Muhammadiyah is an Islamic organization that aims to form a charitable civil society and has a productive and independent network from the state. Muhammadiyah carries out a critical function in carrying out checks and balances for the state. This is done by using the criticality network. This study discusses critical networks, patterns of spreading criticism, and challenges for Muhammadiyah. This research is library research with a qualitative approach. The data collection technique used is a literature study, which is strengthened by interviews with related elements. The results of this study indicate that Muhammadiyah's critical network is divided into two, namely formal and non-formal networks. The pattern of spreading criticism is in the form of a pyramid. Nevertheless, Muhammadiyah faces challenges such as the exclusivity of thought, accommodation to “progressive” institutions affiliated with Muhammadiyah, and debates over concepts that are generally born from the womb of Western thought. This research shows that Muhammadiyah as civil society has a productive network to carry out checks and balances to the state. As a developing civil society, it still has challenges to overcome.

Abstract

This paper examines the teaching of Wiḥdat al-Wujūd in Majelis Shalawat Muhammad in Surabaya and Bojonegoro from 2011 to the study period. As a Sufi “organization,” Majelis Shalawat under Gus Kahar and Gus Mursyidin (murshid) learned the Sufi thoughts on Ibnu ‘Arabi doctrine. This article was established on qualitative research using participatory techniques, in which the author was deeply involved in the Majelis Sahalawat. On the one side, this paper explores the Sufi education system of Gus Kahar and Gus Mursyidin from ‘lelaku’ or riyāḍah. The result of the inquiry presented a connection between the sanad and Sufi scholars in Java. On the other hand, Sufi thought in various Majelis Shalawat indicates a strong Wiḥdat al-Wujūd thought. This article argues that the thought of Wiḥdat al-Wujūd continuing living from time to time is proven by the thoughts of the two murshids in Majelis Shalawat Muhammad in East Java. These two murshids do not directly use the term Wiḥdat al-Wujūd; instead, the term aḥad or aḥadiyah is more frequent, which is synonymous with Wiḥdat al-Wujūd doctrines of Ibnu ‘Arabi. It also emphasizes that Indonesian Sufism denotes the importance of locality and cultural catharsis within Javanese Muslim’s spiritual practices.

Abstract

The local wisdom-based Cirebon's Petatah-petitih, namely Slaman, Slumun, Slamet, and Slata, Slutu, Wutuh, has played an important role in shaping people's mindsets, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper is a philological study of copies of manuscripts about Jawokan and Suluk still practiced by the people of Cirebon. The paper aims to discuss the contextual problems of COVID-19 from the perspective of oral literature that has developed in Cirebon. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, this study will examine the oral literature of Cirebon's Petatah-petitih through Abed al-Jabiri's critique of reason named burhānī. The study found that the ideas formed in Cirebon's Petatah-petitih could be a power of knowl­edge in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Later, it will use Michel Foucault's theory of the relationship between power and knowledge as an analytical framework. In this regard, the meaning of something is always found in relation to other meanings. The value of Cirebon's Petatah-petitih will be meaningful and have life value if it is applied to deal with the recent pandemic.

Abstract

This study focuses on religio-cultural values and meanings within the ritual of Jamasan Bende (Bende washing) on 10th Rabi’ul Awal in Bumijawa, Tegal, Central Java, Indonesia. The topic is interesting as religious and cultural values intermingle within a local practice. It can be seen from how the ritual is accompanied by the recitation of the holy verses of the Qur'an. It signifies that ancient ritual traditions have begun to fade in society because they are considered to contain mystical beliefs and heretical elements handed down from the inhabitants’ ancestors. However, the successors have been trying to advocate and revitalize it instead of abolishing it. It is qualitative research that serving as a field study. The approach used in this research is phenomenology. It digs deeper into interviewing people practicing the ritual and documenting things concerning it. It employs magi theory and theoretical stances from Marshall’s ritual theory that heavily focuses on the issue of religious ritual simultaneously.

Abstract

The plural societies, on the one hand, are an asset. However, it can also lead to social conflict. This study aims to uncover the values of moderatism found in the Male tradition in Jembrana, Bali. This article is qualitative research with an interpretive method. The data were collected through observation and interviews. This study reveals that there are values of religious moderation found in the Male tradition practiced by the Muslim community in Jembrana, Bali. The tradition contains integration between Islamic teachings and traditions that do not conflict with the normative teachings of Islam. The tradition involves not only the Muslims but also the Hindus. Thus, the social harmony and co-existence among religious believers are firmly established through Male tradition. This study expectedly contributes to giving more references for mainstreaming religious moderation based on the factual case in Indonesia. Theoretically, it also supports the government’s formulation of the indicators of religious moderation in creating a harmonious relationship among believers through local tradition preservation. Yet, this study has not explained the concrete strategy taken by the Jembrana local government regarding the success of mainstreaming religious moderation in the practice of Male tradition.

Abstract

This study analyzed the community interaction in Larantuka City, East Flores with the aim of determining the implementation of the Nostra Aetate document and the reciprocity between Muslims, Catholics, and Protestants. The qualitative data of this study were obtained from studies on documents and interviews with sources from Catholics, Muslims, and Protestants living in Larantuka. This study was conducted between January and June 2021. The researcher drew three conclusions from this study. First, Larantuka residents are open to accepting and acknowledging the presence of other religions besides Catholicism. Other religions are given the liberty to express their faith in Larantuka. Second, the Nostra Aetate document has been practiced, albeit not perfectly. The spirit of rivalry that grew among Catholics in the past is turning into a spirit of dialogue. Third, the “tulun talin" spirit, the Lamaholot customs and habits of supporting those in need or helping each other, which are the cultural background of the Larantuka people, serves as a way for the people to express the spirit of equal reciprocity among religious believers in Larantuka which Nostra Aetate inspired. The dominant attitudes are cooperation, mutual respect, and mutual acknowledgment that the presence and existence of other people with all religious and cultural backgrounds attached to them is a prerequisite for building human civilization and the common good.

Abstract

This paper focused its attention on three main problems. First, the changes occurred when ancestral religious rituals in Lamaholot collided with Islam and Catholicism. Second, the social cohesion capital possessed by the Lamaholot community in building inter­religious and interfaith dialogue in East Flores. Third, the challenges faced, and negotiations carried out in the interreligious and interfaith interaction and dialogue. This paper is constructed upon structural functionalism theory. Data was collected using observations, interviews, and documents. Data analysis method and technique used in this paper were interpretive qualitative. This paper identified two domains as entry points for developing interreligious and interfaith dialogue. First, the concepts of divinity in local Lamaholot rituals and in the world’s religions (Islam and Catholicism) meet and strengthen each other and become the epistemological basis for dialogue. Second, Lamaholot rituals become a medium for transmitting the values of Lamaholot solidarity.

Abstract

This study aims to identify patterns of social interaction among the inter-religious communities in Jayawijaya, Papua, through the tradition of Bakar Batu. This study employs a qualitative approach by interpreting data from observation and interviews. Associative and dissociative social interaction patterns are also used as analytical theories. This study revealed that the associative interaction pattern is evident in the social interaction between the Dani Muslim community and the Christian community in the Bakar Batu tradition through accommodation and acculturation. The accommodation process is reflected in the form of tolerance; both respect each other despite their different religious teachings. Meanwhile, the acculturation process is found in reconstructing the essential elements in the practice of the Bakar Batu tradition by substituting pork with halal meat. The theoretical implication of this study reveals that associative patterns of social interaction can be the basis for paradigms and approaches to harmonizing relations among distinct religious communities and between religion and culture. However, this study has not discussed the role of Islamic socio-religious institutions or organizations in the practice of the Bakar Batu tradition.

Abstract

The ideology of Pancasila is agreed upon to reconcile ethnic, religious, racial and intergroup diversity. However, tribal fanatism clashes in understanding inevitably lead to social conflicts, such as the tribal conflict in Yahukimo Papua. Based on this background, there are research questions, first, why do tribal social conflicts still exist in the Pancasila ideology state? How is Pancasila ideology able to be main foundation of the resolution of tribal social conflict? Methodo­logically, this paper is the result of literature study research. To explain the research questions, Bhikhu Parekh's theory of multi­culturalism is used. In addition, the literature study method is used for data collection and the sociological approach for data analysis. The results of this study can be concluded that first, social conflicts with tribal nuances in the Pancasila ideological state will continue to have the potential to emerge when national identity is not maintained with a commitment to nationalism. Second, for this reason, the ideology of Pancasila in must continue to be carried out structurally and culturally for the resolution of tribal social conflicts. In the future, it is hoped that the Pancasila will ideally be embedded to strengthen national identity and unity.

Abstract

This study intends to identify the establishment of Islamic social construction in the Shi’a community in Pekalongan City. Qualitative research applied in this study gathered from case studies using a phenomenological approach. Data came from in-depth observation, interviews, and documentation. The theory of social construction formulated by Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann became the basic theory of analysis. The results showed that the social construction of Islam in the Shi’a community in Pekalongan City was formed through externalization, objectivization, and internalization. The process of externalization through the dissemination of knowledge of Shi’a teachings, as well as about the specialty of Ahl al-Bayt in the religious authority of Muslims. Objectivization happened according to Shi’a teaching habituation moderately, responding to the plurality of under­standings and social attitudes of the Muslim religion. The internali­zation process went with awareness to not apply the teachings of taqiyyah. In addition, the availability to live in harmony thrives on maintaining the integration of state life in Indonesia. The theoretical implications of this study show that theological inclusivism can form moderate and open religious social understandings and attitudes in the plurality of religious life. However, this study did not examine the role of the Pekalongan City Government in advocating for the benefit of the Shi’a community as a minority group in Pekalongan City which becomes the limitation of this study.
