Abstract

The article is based on the fact that “jomlo” or being single has become a new trend as a sociological phenomenon and the product of the practice of hijrah within the life of Muslim youth, especially Indonesian Muslim students. The concept of dating for those who practice the "men-jomlo" is very important in this work today. They, in fact, have unintentionally started to create a new culture of being njomlo although they are not being involved in a community designed for those practicing njomlo. This work attempts to provide analytical discussions on the concept of dating according to the students who practice the njomlo, what they mean by jomlo to halal, and their motivation to practice the njomlo. With the support of qualitative data, the work provides important findings on the practice of njomlo by the students of IAIN Pontianak. First, generally, the students agree that dating tends to lead to negative than positive attitudes so that they decide to choose being single or njomlo until they get married for halal relationship. Second, they believe that Islam does not have a concept of dating as understood by the youth today in the modern world and there is no Islamic dating. Third, religious conciseness has become the main element to motivate them so that they tend to rather choose to practice njomlo until they find their halal wife as they say “jomlo sampai halal."

Abstract

This article tries to explain the role of reflexive capacity among young people during transition to work. Specifically, four informants in this research are representations of middle class youth from Yogyakarta. This research applies qualitative methods and in-depth interviews as techniques to gather data. This article shows the relevancy of reflexive capacity as a form of embodied cultural capital. Young people whom possess high volume of reflexive capacity will be able to understand the shift of rule of the game in the field and responds quickly and strategically. Furthermore, this reflexive capacity is important as a pre-requirement to anticipate present and future risk. On the other hand, reflexive capacity is only one of entry points among other forms of capital because in reality, young people have to actively negotiate with multilayers structural forces which objectively exist.

Abstract

This research was motivated by previous studies that discussed Noken from various points of view but did not examine aspects of the commodification of Noken as an implication of the world heritage label from UNESCO. Noken is a native Papuan knit bag that has high cultural values, sacred entity, and a source of life; as a container for carrying garden products and animal hunting products. Noken is also a form of maturity initiation, Papuan woman who can knit noken may enter the marriage phase. Applying the qualitative method, with observations and interviews with women knitting and selling it in Jayapura as informants, this study found that: firstly, Noken had undergone massive economic commodification, started with UNESCO's recognition of inherited noken as intangible, which led to more and more traded noken. Secondly, noken has transformed values, especially about the noken value that animates them. The transformation of values in noken is a necessity in the dynamics of the social, economic, and cultural changes of the Papuan. Thirdly, by knitting and selling it, they are trying to preserve the sacred value of noken, also as a strategy to survive economically in encountering the impact of the capitalist system.
