Abstract

This article is intended to re-exanune and offer a new interpretation to the Qur'anic verses dealing with the issues of menstruation. One of the major problems in the Qur'an is the fact that it is the basic maraji' and mashadir (references) for the formulation of Islamic law and advices on religious matters. In many cases people fail to differentiate between the Qur'an and books of Qur'anic interpretation; the Qur'an has been equated with exegesis of the Qur'an. Further, the Muslim scholars who wrote tafsir are mostly male and live in a patriarchal society, accordingly patriarchal values penetrates into their thoughts. Besides this patriarchal bias in the interpretation, the social realities of Muslims have changed too, in a speed pace. Consequently, the formulation of Islamic fiqh should be changed appropriately to address the current issues, including the idea of menstrual taboo by re-interpreting the Qur'an. This article is therefore not only offering a new light to the interpretation of the text which promotes humanitarian and egalitarian values but also identifying the patriarchal biases in the process of interpreting the Qur'an.

Human trafficking is one of activities that constitute serious violence against human rights, particularly the rights of women and children trafficked. In fact, trafficking has become a universal phenomenon and is considered the enemy of all countries in the world. In Indonesia, women and children are trafficked from one country to another and within the country itself. They are trafficked for domestic work, waiters, entertainers, booked brides, beggars or prostitution. Law enforcement in both national and international levels has been conducted. Abstract

The issue of the relationship between Islam with the gender and human rights is a matter of praxis whose development can be witnessed through various channels, one of which is a scientific journal. Through scientific journals, the issues that are of concern to academics in the university environment are recognized. This study aims to analyze the extent to which issues of mainstreaming gender, human rights, and Islam can be summarized in the Jurnal Musawa, Jurnal Perempuan, and various journals in the Directory Open Access Journal (DOAJ) which   also   reflect the contemporary problems of society. Specifically, this research also produced a strategic understanding for the management of scientific journals in order to be able to adjust its function as a medium for academic dissemination with the latest developments in the fast-moving scientific world. This study is qualitative research by descriptive approach. The results of mapping and analysis show that the relation of women with legal, violence, and political issues is the main concern of academics. The emergence of these issues is seen as more than just a response to various injustices and human rights violations against women and children that occurred in Indonesia. In addition to the three issues above, other issues that emerge with high intensity and are evenly distributed in each journal are child marriage, feminism in the form of women’s movements, women’s leadership, or women’s positioning in local wisdom.]

Abstract

This paper explores the concept of spirituality and its relation to feminism, and investigates feminist critics upon religion and women's spirituality in the history of institutionalized religion. It eventually examines the important role of Muslim women's reading on the authenticity of women's spirituality in Islam. Spirituality has to do with an age,old human quest to seek fulfillment in the process of being human, liberation and pointers towards transcendence. Feminism emerged as a new awareness in understanding reality and questioned the existing of androcentric, sexist and patriarchal construction of religion and spirituality. Women's involvement in the process of reading religious texts is imperative in attempt to produce more egalitarian and just reading. Muslim Women's readings arrive at conclusion that the authenticity of one's spirituality, female and male, is determined by one's piety (taqwa) which is identified by one's ability to recognize constraints and preserve equilibrium within her/his life. Piety is the ability to balance individual autonomous reasoning with social hegemony and the natural divine laws, to balance the moral-religious exhortation with reason, knowledge and experience, to balance the heart and mind. It has no relation with gender or sex.

Abstract

Abortion is one of the oldest methods of family planning in the world. Yet apart from it still being controversial from a moral-ethical perspective except in emergency situations, the abortion of a fetus can also be dangerous from a health perspective. If it is not done properly and correctly by professionals, abortion can lead to the patient experiencing complications such as bleeding, infection of the reproductive organs, infertility and even death. This article stresses that complications such as these can only be avoided if abortions are carried out professionally by experts.

Abstract

In this article, the writer focuses on a mosque built in the time of Mohammad,  and analyses the implications of its construction towards the way that women worship in it. Some of its implications are shown in such sayings and hadiths that seem decidedly misogynic, such as “The worst place in prayer for women at the forefront” or “A woman can break the legitimacy of a prayer”, as well as “The best place for a women to pray is at home” or that “Women should only go to the mosque with their husbands”. The understanding of such hadiths is explored by the writer contextually to reduce or allay gender bias in the interaction between men and women in the mosque. Based on contextual analysis, it is found that cultural, geographical, and structural and even the condition of local facilities are all deciding factors that influence the design and layout of mosques, which in turn influences the position and interaction between the mosque as a place and women as its users. With this in mind, a call to rethink the meaning of such discriminative hadiths is certainly in order.

Abstract

The revving up of narrow, 'Syari'ah' based revivalist movements is chaining down the movement of women as a whole. Thanks to a concept of Syari'ah that is decidedly misogynic in putting forth rules and legislations; containing quite a bit of hatred against women, rooted in a religious view that is negatively sexual, and aimed at the female body. This has lead to simplification, reduction and generally destructive confusion manifested in numerous acts of Jilbabisasi and one-sided clothing regulations. Trampling over diversity, and taking down long...standing traditional clothing that has created no previous moral problems, some of which has become rooted in the identities of a culture, as collateral damage.
