Abstract

Mathematical similarities and inequalities are common mathematical statements related to numbers whose truth can be proven by mathematical induction. Proving by mathematical induction involves two main steps, namely the basic step and the induction step. The study of mathematical induction related to similarity and inequality is very important and is still relatively limited in quantity. This study aims to determine whether there are significant differences in students' ability to prove mathematical statements using mathematical induction on mathematical similarities and inequalities problems and identify misconceptions. The study was conducted with a mixed method. A sample of 117 students from two high schools in the city of Singaraja was selected by a random cluster technique to obtain quantitative data. Meanwhile, the research subjects were two students selected based on the misconceptions shown to obtain qualitative data. Quantitative data on the ability to prove the similarity and inequality problems using mathematical induction was collected by written tests and qualitative data on misconceptions were collected by interview. Quantitative data were analyzed by a paired group t-test and by z test for proportions. Meanwhile, qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis of students' works to identify their misconceptions. The results showed that proving the mathematical induction of the inequality problem was more difficult than proving the similarity problem. This difficulty occurs both in the basic step and the induction step. Misconceptions arise due to the fallacy of analogies and interpretations of mathematical notation.

Abstract

According to Van Hiele, in understanding geometry, students need to understand five stages, namely stage 1 (introduction stage), stage 2 (analysis stage), stage 3 (sequencing stage), stage 4 (deduction stage), and stage 5 (accuracy stage). Each student has different geometric thinking abilities. This study aims to examine the geometric abilities of junior high school students in the material of flat-sided geometry according to Van Hiele's Theory. This research belongs to the type of qualitative research with a case study design. It was conducted at three schools in Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The subjects were students of SMP Negeri 1 Padang, SMP Negeri 7 Padang, and SMP Negeri 25 Padang. Data collection was carried out using tests, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out with the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and data verification or drawing conclusions. The data originality technique was carried out with the triangulation technique, where the researcher compared the test data with the results of interviews with students. Of the 94 students (male = 38, female 56) tested based on the geometric thinking level of Van Hiele Theory, 92.55% of the students reached the Van Hiele thinking stage at the visualization level. As many as 45.74% of students reached the level of geometric analysis, and 6.38% of students reached the level of abstraction. For the level of deduction and accuracy, no one has been able to solve the problem. The results obtained in this study are that most students are still at stages 1 and 2, unlike van Hiele's opinion, which revealed that the level of geometric thinking for junior high school students is at level 3. According to the study results, it is essential to carry out further checks on the level of geometric thinking of junior high school students in other areas.

Abstract

As part of 21st-century skills, communication is an essential skill for students. Students 'mathematical communication tends to below, one of which is influenced by students' self-confidence. For this reason, the purpose of this study is to describe the mathematical communication skills in solving circle problems based on students' self-confidence. Determining the subject using purposive sampling technique, namely from 36 students of class VIII SMP in Madiun, East Java, Indonesia, obtained two subjects with high self-confidence (SCT) and one subject with low self-confidence (SCR). A qualitative descriptive approach was used in this study. Tests and interviews were used as data collection techniques. Data were analyzed through reduction, presentation, and concluding. The results of this study include: SCT is capable while SCR is less able to meet the indicators of mathematical communication skills both in writing and orally at the stages of understanding problems, implementing plans, and checking back; and SCT can meet mathematical communication indicators both written and oral, while SCR is less able to meet written mathematical communication indicators but can verbally at the stage of planning completion. The level of self-confidence of students differentiates their mathematical communication skills in solving problems. Thus, a teacher needs to design an appropriate question to train students' mathematical communication skills with low self-confidence.
