Abstract

This research was motivated by the low problem-solving abilities, mathematical disposition, and learning motivation of junior students. This study aims to find and analyze the influence of mathematical dispositions empirically and learning motivation on problem-solving abilities. Samples were obtained in class VII-2 at SMPN 2 Cimahi as many as 34 students.  The study uses quantitative correlational methods. The analysis was done by a regression method. The data collection was given two pieces of study instruments, namely problem-solving test instruments and non-test questionnaires in a set of mathematical dispositions and learning motivation. The data were tested for regression and correlation. The results of data analysis that was a mathematical disposition and learning motivation were significantly influenced by the problem-solving ability of junior students, with the regression equation Y = 1.95 + 0.121X1 + 0.015X2 indicating a positive influence, and the degree of closeness is the Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.827 classified in a robust positive interpretation. Together, mathematical disposition variables and learning motivation variables can determine the problem-solving variable by 68.3%. Recommendations from this study, teachers should design learning processes that can improve mathematical disposition and student motivation so that students' problem-solving abilities increase.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out how the gender perspective affects the mistakes made by students in the ratio and proportion questions. Mindset’s differences between male and female will affect how they solve problems and it will also affect their mathematics learning outcomes. Errors made by students were analyzed using the Newman error analysis indicator. Error analysis indicators used are reading errors, misunderstanding errors, transformation errors, process errors, and error writing answers (encoding). This research uses descriptive qualitative research method. This research was conducted at SMPN 2 Cimahi. The instruments in this study were test and non-test questions. It can be concluded from this research that there are differences between male and female students when working on ratio and proportion concept questions based on the mistakes they’ve made. The most common mistakes made by male students are mistakes in the process of writing answers. This error occurs because they do not write down the complete answer details, it’s because male tend to be simpler in solving problems. The most common mistake made by female is an error in understanding. It’s because female tend to use logic-less when understanding the mathematical problems presented in the questions.

Abstract

One of the cognitive skills that students must have is problem-solving ability. Therefore, a standardized test is needed to measure this ability. However, until now, the tests used to measure mathematical problem-solving ability were not standardized. This research aims to develop a valid and practical mathematical problem-solving test in the discussion of triangles and rectangles. This research is part of the RD 4D type with steps: Defined (analysis to develop a test), Design (designing a problem-solving test form), and Develop (expert judgment and small group trials). The instrument in this research was the validation sheet used by the validator to assess each test item. The data analysis technique used the Aiken method for expert judgment and qualitative descriptive for development testing. The result is a valid and practical mathematical problem-solving test because the V-Aiken value is more than 0.532. Based on this, the instrument can be used to measure the mathematical problem-solving ability of junior high school students in the discussion of triangles and rectangles.
