Abstract

The big five personality traits are the best acknowledged and most commonly used the model in psychology. Therefore, many personality scales are developed based on this personality model. IPIP-BFM-50 is one of the open-source scales measuring big five personalities that is widely used by world researchers. This study aimed to adapt IPIP-BFM-50 into Indonesian and evaluate its psychometric properties. The adaptation was done by following the guidelines of the International Test Commission (ITC). The result shows that IPIP-BFM-50 Indonesia has Aiken's V index ranging from 0.71 - 0.98. Alpha reliability with n = 502 ranges from 0.762 (agreeableness) to 0.862 (emotional stability). Factor analysis shows that the items are well-grouped according to their dimensions with loading factor ranging from 0.34 to 0.75 on the factors measured. Thus, IPIP-BFM-50 Indonesia has satisfactory psychometric properties and can be used to measure the Big five personality.

Abstract

Developed countries have at least 2% of entrepreneurs from the total population of the country. However, Indonesia has a very low number of entrepreneurs as well as an increasing unemployment rate over the years. Recently, the development of entrepreneurship in Indonesia dominated by the growing number of digital startup. Moreover, Indonesia is a country with the largest number of a digital startup in Southeast Asia. Initial psychological studies on entrepreneurship are focused on the personal characteristics of the entrepreneurs. However, conclusions from more than 30 years of research indicate that there are no special personality characteristics of entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs. In essence, the heart of entrepreneurship lies in the ability to recognize an opportunity. Opportunity recognition is a mechanism that happens in an individual’s cognitive process. Therefore, this study intended to reveal the cognitive processes that take place when entrepreneurs, in particular, the founders of digital startups, in the identification of entrepreneurial opportunities. This research uses the think-aloud protocol method with protocol analysis. Based on this research, we found that in the process of opportunity recognition, entrepreneurs focus their cognitive efforts on the market (demand) and technology (supply) as well as build relationships and meaningful patterns in these two aspects through structural relationship processing. This study provides an in-depth description of the cognitive processes that occur when entrepreneurs recognize entrepreneurial opportunities through structural alignment processes.

Abstract

Adaptive self-reflection could be done if people could react positively when analyzing negative experienced by reflecting emotions, allowing the self to reconstruct the feelings and meaning of the experience rather than recounting what has happened and what is perceived or avoiding it (self-distancing). The purpose of this study is to developed adaptive self-reflection questionnaire by validating internal structure some of the scales that have the same relation with adaptive self-reflection construct. This study used a quantitative approach with Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) method involving 100 respondents in the trial and 306 respondents in the next test. The Adaptive self-reflection questionnaire that produced in this study consisted of 15 items that measure three dimensions, namely the emotional reactivity, thought content, and avoidance. The Adaptive self-reflection questionnaire proved to be valid and reliable (CR = 0.80). The test results proved that measuring adaptive self-reflection questionnaire meet the unidimensionality assumption.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the role of psychological well-being, gender ideology, time spent together with children, and time spent at work in predicting father involvement. This study was conducted on fathers with at least one child aged 0-12 years old, who resided in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi (Jabodetabek). Data was collected from 371 fathers through online questionnaires. Results from multiple regression analysis suggest that psychological well-being (β = 0.322; p < 0.01), gender ideology (β = 0.104; p < 0.05), and time spent with children (β = 0.126; p < 0.05) significantly predicted father involvement (R2 = 0.145). Time spent at work (β = 0.014) however, did not predict father involvement. Though, there are other factors that need to be considered when we are going to predict father involvement, such as father’s factors, mother’s factors, child’s factors, and contextual factors.

Abstract

Mindfulness practice is being promoted in Western countries as a means to improve one’s ability to restrain aggression under the “depleted” condition. The applicability of this framework in non-Western settings is yet to be determined. This study (N = 119 Indonesian undergraduates) directly replicated Yusainy and Lawrence (2015) experiment with native British sample, to examine the moderation of mindfulness induction on post-depletion aggression (i.e., blast intensity in an adapted competitive reaction-time task). Similar results were obtained, in that mindfulness induction moderated the ego-depletion and (i) blast intensity link under low/moderate provocation, and (ii) self-control performance link after the aggression task. Notably, the benefit of mindfulness was also indicated in our additional aggression measure of the late deliverance of maximum blast in depleted females. While Western operationalization of mindfulness operates quite similar across cultures, the inclusion of a subtle measure of aggression appears to be crucial for Indonesian females.

Abstract

This research aimed to examine the role of social skills in depression among college students through the mediation of loneliness.  As many as 645 college students in Yogyakarta (Male = 180, Female = 465) participated in this study. Social skills were measured using the Social Skills Scale, depression was measured using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and loneliness was measured using UCLA Loneliness Scale version 3, which were adapted into Bahasa Indonesia. Regression analysis with a simple mediation model showed that, as expected, social skills negatively contributed to depression with the mediation of loneliness. This means that lower social skills were associated with higher loneliness and in turn contributed to an increasing tendency towards depression among college students. Additional analysis found that levels of social skills, loneliness, and depression differed among college students in different years, with students in the fifth years and after being lower on social skills and higher on loneliness and depression. Furthermore, it was shown that 51% of respondents were indicating depression symptoms which levels varied from mild to severe.

Abstract

This study examined the construct validity of the Graduate Academic Potential Test (PAPS). The examination was performed on all existing PAPS series (6 forms) to identify the consistency of dimensionality structure of PAPS. Data of this study were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The results of the analysis support assumption that the structure of the PAPS test is unidimensional. All of the model fit indices support the decision that the unidimensional model fit the data. The study also examined factor loading that the non-verbal components, especially the quantitative components that had a higher factor weight than the other components.

Abstract

This research aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of a new instrument for measuring vocational interest: Padjadjaran Interest Inventory (PII). There were 2,648 participants in this study, consisting of workers, high school, and university students, with gender proportion of 1,014 (38.3%) males and 1,634 (61.7%) females. This research used descriptive statistic test, t-test and MANOVA for gender differences, reliability coefficients and validity evidence by using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The results showed that PII has good psychometric properties: it has good reliability and valid internal structure; it is standardized by gender, and it is applicable for large groups with relative ease. PII can be used for career exploration. Limitation of this study was discussed for future research.
