Abstract

The EFL professors and Zen students experienced dynamic learning during the pandemic. Thus, new scenarios in the new normal are required. This study investigates (1) what EFL millennial English professors (MEPs) and EFL Zen students (EZSs)' attitude to hybrid learning (HL), (2) why MEPs and EZSs need HL, and (3) how the MEPs and EZSs will implement the HL in New Normal. It is a survey study using a questionnaire that resulted in ordinal and content data. 174 MEPs and EZSs from diverse universities in Indonesia participated. The data were taken through online Google Forms and were analyzed descriptively based on critical success factors and criteria content analysis. The result shows that MEPs and EZSs responded positively (51.15%), neutrally (31.61%), and negatively (17.24%) to HL in EFL classrooms. The respondents think that HL is inevitable and challenging. The ratio online and offline is on-off (75:25), on-off (50:50), and on-off (25:75). The sequence of HL covers first-half all online, first-half all offline, in turn, online and offline, and in turn: offline and online. Most MEPs and EZSs (56.8 %) believe that HL is promising. The study carried out the proportional scenarios for HL; thus, MEPs and EZSs should be well prepared.

Abstract

Many studies indicated a genre-based approach (GBA) as an effective method in English foreign language (EFL) teaching and GBA is also integrated into the English teaching curriculum. However, EFL teachers' portraits of GBA use in teaching practices are little understood. Abstract

In learning and teaching English as a foreign language, poetry has been used in several non-literary classes but in relatively small proportions, and the foci were mainly not on the students' self-expression and individual creative process. This research aims to understand the experiences of student-teachers majoring in English in using poetry as a means of self-expression and their creative process. This study was conducted with a qualitative approach involving six student-teachers enrolled in the English Language Study Program of a Southern Yogyakarta University, Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed through coding. The results show that poetry became a place for self-reflection, sharing personal experiences, a place for self-awareness, and freedom of expression. Meanwhile, the creative process that the students experienced consists of receiving examples, reliving memories, free writing, finding the right place and atmosphere, writing and re-writing, and receiving and responding to feedback. The study implied that poetry could benefit students with a planned and lengthy process. The study might contribute to the field of language education by providing insights into how poetry can be incorporated into the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Discussing second language acquisition (SLA) from the perspective of one same-nationality family has been massively conducted. However, the recent study regarding SLA in toddlers in mixed-marriage families, especially with Indonesian mothers, has not been previously observed. Directed to the study demonstrated by Li (2007), this present study aimed to examine the three essential marks of family roles on their children's acquisition, such as the parent's literacy accomplishment, the daily occupation choice and opportunity, and adaptation as well as integration into the local country. Two families with Sudan-Indonesia and America-Indonesia backgrounds participated as research subjects. The narrative inquiry method through interviews (see Duff, 2019) was employed to gain the data. Then, the data were analyzed by using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six thematic analysis stages. The results revealed that the parental academic records of accomplishment, the family's occupation, and the socialization to the domestic environment positively affected family language policy (FLP), shaping the stairs of children's SLA. Moreover, this study may contribute to Indonesian families, school stakeholders, and EFL teachers in teaching the foreign language to their children and EFL students in gaining new languages.

Abstract

Presently, writing research articles causes anxiety for EFL students because they have to modify their writing to fit the English academic writing style, so academic writing is the most difficult skill to master because it requires an intricate process. Therefore, this study aims to uncover the frequent difficulties of academic writing and the coping strategies faced by EFL students. This study used a mixed method. Fifty-five participants from the English Department at a private university in Malang, Indonesia, filled out the questionnaire, and five participants were interviewed. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The results showed that students experienced frequent difficulties, namely structure, developing ideas, vocabulary, and grammar, and the most frequent difficulty was grammar. To overcome challenges in grammar aspects, there were four manual coping strategies that they applied such as reading more articles, looking carefully at the function of conjunction, learning more about spelling, capitalization, and punctuation, and editing their work, and three automatic coping strategies that they used, namely using Grammarly, using an online English monolingual dictionary, and using Microsoft Word. The implications are to assist students in identifying and overcoming their frequent difficulties when writing academically.

Abstract

Numerous scholarly investigations have been conducted on English language assessment practices. Nevertheless, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the challenges and potential solutions related to implementing effective language assessment practices, particularly within Indonesian senior high schools. This study aims to investigate the perceived constraints and aspired prospective solutions associated with language assessment practices in Indonesian EFL classrooms. The data for this qualitative case study were collected by conducting in-depth interviews with fifteen EFL teachers from different senior high schools across South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Based on the thematic analysis of the data, this study revealed the perceived challenges to implementing English language assessment practices in three general categories: national policy-related issues, institution-related issues, and student-teacher-related issues. This study also revealed the need for leadership support to foster school culture support for innovative language assessment practices as the main aspired solution to implementing language assessment practices. These findings help improve understanding of the numerous factors that must be considered when putting English language assessment into practice, theoretically and practically.

Abstract

Numerous scholarly investigations have been conducted on students' perceptions of integrating information and communication technology (ICT) in English language teaching (ELT). However, existing research lacks specific exploration of students' perceptions regarding web-based and non-web-based ICT in vocational high schools across perspectives of understanding, ease of learning, and learning challenges. Therefore, this study aims to investigate students' perceptions of ICT integration in ELT, specifically examining web-based and non-web-based ICT across perspectives of understanding, ease of learning, and learning challenges. The research method used was a case study. The research involved six students of the two departments (Engineering and Management) at a vocational high school in Malang, Indonesia, as the participants. Data were collected through interviews and analyzed thematically. Results indicate that, based on perspectives of understanding and ease of learning, students exhibit positive attitudes towards integrating ICT, particularly web-based tools like Canva, Quizizz, and Wordwall, alongside non-web-based tools such as LCD and tablet, citing enhanced learning processes. Conversely, in the perspective of learning challenges, challenges like poor internet connectivity for web-based ICT and operational issues for non-web-based tools persist. This study emphasizes the importance of a balanced approach to ICT integration to meet diverse learning needs.
