Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out whether the use of YouTube Video could enhance students‟ speaking ability and cultural understanding. The research method used was Classroom Action Research. The subject of the research was beginner Indonesian students at Northern Illinois University (NIU) in the academic year of 2014/2015. There were sixteen students in this class. They were all American and they had never learned Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian Language) before. They first took Indonesian class in Fall semester 2014. The lack of exposure to Indonesian in the U.S. made the students difficult to speak in Indonesian and to know Indonesian culture. In Spring semester 2015, the researcher regularly used videos of Indonesian Native speakers from YouTube during teaching and learning process. The video also provided the idea about Indonesian culture. To facilitate comprehension of the video, the researcher developed an assortment of supporting materials, such as listening comprehension questions, glossaries, and follow-up discussion questions. Some of the videos were very funny and entertaining, which were enjoyed by almost everyone and particularly favored in culture. Finding from the research revealed that the use of video from YouTube could get students energized and engaged in the hands-on learning process. Students got more time to enhance their listening comprehension and to practice their speaking skill at the same time. They were interested in and involved in the discussion about Indonesian culture from the videos. It was clearly an instructional medium that was compelling and generated a much greater amount of interest and enjoyment than the more traditional printed material.

Abstract

Speaking skills are very important. Through mastering these skills, a student is able to communicatehis ideas, feelings, and emotions easily. Besides, nowadays, almost all job requirements put a strongemphasis on the speaking skills’ mastery to its candidates. However, the students seemed to havelow motivation in learning it, especially students taking English for Specific Purpose (ESP), such asEnglish for Front Office. Many factores contributed to this phenomenon. One of them was thelearning atmosphere and the learning activities. When they were not enjoyable in their learning andthey were not given opportunities to practice their language, their learning achievement wouldbecome low. When it remained all the time, they could not achieve the learning goal very well. Therefore, they needed to be helped. One strategy that could be done was by implementing atechnique which could arouse their motivation. That strategy was task-based learning technique. Itprovides the learners with an enjoyable learning environment and gives students a lot of chances topractice their speaking. Thus, it can develop to establishing students’ communicative competenceand provides them a bridge to reach the intended communicative goal. This paper aims atillustrating how the task-based learning is employed in an ESP classroomto enhancestudents’speaking skills at ESP context.

Abstract

One of component which shall be noticed in the learning process is assessment. Assessment  can  provide constructive  feedback for  teachers  as  well  as  students.  Assessment  results  can  also  provide motivation  for  students to  achieve  better. Even assessment can influence the learning behavior because students tend to direct their learning activities towards the assessment that conducted by teacher. In carrying out the assessment, teacher needs assessment instruments in good test items for testing the abilities of students. The instrument of assessment is a set of questioning for measuring a sample of behavior. The teacher questions have the greatest impact because the level of student thinking directly proportional to the level of questions asked.  Thus, when planning questions must consider the purpose of each question and then develop the appropriate level and type of question to accomplish the purpose. The objective of this research is to know the feasibility and an effectiveness of integration of higher order thinking skills on instrument of assessment observed from critical thinking skills. This research used the experiment research method. The subjects of research were Accounting Education Department students of higher education. The data of research were collected through essay test which then analyzed using quantitative. The results of this research showed that: 1) The instrument of assessment which integrated with higher order thinking skills is declared feasible to be used, 2) Integration of higher order thinking skills on assessment instrument effective observed from critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the students’ conception of Physics Education Study Program,  Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Sebelas Maret University, about the concept of a simple pendulum period, after conducting a basic physics experiment. A simple pendulum consists of a mass (m) that is hanging at the end of a light string. The string is considered ideal, which is massless and can not be stretched. In the laboratory, students investigated the affects of a few different physical variables on the period of a simple pendulum (T). The variables were mass (m), length of the pendulum (L), and the initial angular displacement (θ). The results of the study showed that: 1). all students had a right conception about the dependency of a simple pendulum period on the string length, that is, the period of a simple pendulum is proportional to the square root of the string length; 2). all students had a right conception about the dependency of a simple pendulum period on the mass, that is, the period of a simple pendulum is not dependent on the mass; 3). 42% of the students had a wrong conception about the dependency of the period of a simple pendulum on the initial angular displacement, which they concluded that the initial angular displacement  does not affect the period of a simple pendulum. It is, analytically provable that the period of a simple pendulum depends on the initial angular displacement.

Abstract

This paper presents Singapore’s initial teacher training and continuing professional development as a possible model of teacher education and preparation. Since the mid-1990s, several educational reforms and initiatives have been introduced into Singapore education with the goal of equipping her young citizens with knowledge and skills for a globalised economy and workforce, and for the challenges of the 21st century. Teachers are the frontline of any educational endeavour, which means that teacher quality is paramount to its implementation. Thus, the Ministry of Education invested heavily in building the teacher workforce and enhancing its quality in pursuit of the desired educational outcomes. Increased and sustained teacher recruitment enlarged the teacher workforce. Stringent criteria were used to select suitably qualified applicants who went through intensive pre-service teacher training at Singapore’s sole teacher training institute, the National Institute of Education. Several policies were put in place to enable in-service teachers to continually develop and upgrade themselves professionally. For instance, every teacher was entitled to 100 hours per year of professional development. A multi-prong approach was deployed to encourage teachers’ participation in professional training and development. These included workshops or short courses for deepening knowledge of subjects taught and for enhancing pedagogical skills, and conference or seminar attendance for sharing teaching practices and broadening experiences. Teachers were also initiated into “life-long learning” with various sponsorship schemes to pursue masters or doctoral level studies. On the belief that an educational system is as good as the quality of its teachers, this paper concludes with a discussion of Singapore education’s continuing journey towards innovations in teacher development.
