Abstract

Essential teaching skills of pre-service teachers, including scientific approach teaching in which become primary goal in science education, are often developed through modeling. This study utilized an instructional video in biology that showed scientific approach teaching in cooperative learning model. The purpose of this study was (1) to describe the teaching skills of pre-service biology teachers after a modeling session which used the instructional video using scientific approach in cooperative learning, and (2) to describe the views of those pre-service teachers in response to the learning process involving the instructional video. The study involved 11 pre-service teachers in Biology Education program, The State University of Surabaya, Indonesia. The pre-service teachers were asked to conduct teaching simulations according to the video they had observed with different biology topics. Results showed that the instructional video was effective in training pre-service teachers to implement scientific approach in their own cooperative learning. In addition, the pre-service teachers showed positive responses towards the video modeling. Educational implication of this study implies that the instructional video is able to train teaching skills of pre-service teachers.

Abstract

The purposes of writing this paper are to determine: (1) the working principle of vibration sensors can detect impending earthquakes, (2) the sensitivity or the sensitivity of the tool when used in detecting the vibration of an earthquake, (3) demonstration tool Earthquake Detection and Warning with vibration sensor has good meets criteria for use students learn. The method of this research is an a demonstration tool in learning. The basic principle of work and warning earthquake detector with a vibration sensor this is when an earthquake occurs or when the dynamo (earthquake simulator) is started, the resulting vibrations cause movement of the pendulum. This pendulum movement is what will trigger the sound of the bell. When the pendulum movement causes the pendulum in contact with the copper wire ring, then the electricity will flow toward the bell. When electricity flows into the bell will arise in the membrane vibration in the bell. A vibrating membrane will produce resonance which then led to a wave. This wave is what produces the sound on the buzzer. Pendulum vibration frequency is closely related to the magnitude of the voltage / potential difference given input on the dynamo that causes the rotor to rotate. Increasing the voltage will increase the rotational speed of the rotor on a large dynamo. The faster the rotor rotation, the vibration of the pendulum will be even greater. This resulted in the pendulum will be faster and more frequent touching circle copper wire which is connected electricity and bell. Thus the buzzer will sound increasingly rapid and dynamic. The results of the experiment are the greater the number of loops and the greater the voltage will cause a greater rotational speed of the rotor is generated, so that the greater the pendulum vibrations and buzzer / alarm to sound more dynamic. Detector and earthquake warning with vibration sensor has a sensitivity to the number of loops starting from 2 pieces with a 3V input voltage and is capable of detecting an earthquake of ≥3,6 SR. Based on the results of the assessment of a demonstration tool detection and warning of earthquakes with vibration sensor was found that the maximum value that is filled by a validator is 39. It can be concluded that the demonstration tool detection and warning of earthquakes with vibration sensor is included in good criteria for the use of students in learning.

Abstract

The paper is aimed at: (1) finding out the weaknesses of the existing model for teaching speaking; (2) developing a model for teaching speaking using cooperative learning; and (3) finding out whether a model for teaching speaking using cooperative learning is more effective than the existing model for teaching speaking. It is an educational research and development (R & D) for developing a model for teaching speaking using cooperative learning. The research was conducted at the first semester of English Education Department of Graduate School UNS Solo. The steps consist of: (1) studying the existing model for teaching speaking to find the weaknesses of the existing model for teaching speaking using observation, interview, and questionnaire; (2) developing a model for teaching speaking using cooperative learning (trying out the model in speaking class: observation and FGD); and (3) field testing the model to find out whether a model for teaching speaking using cooperative learning is more effective than the existing model for teaching speaking. The paper reveals the following: (1) the weaknesses of the existing model for teaching speaking are as follows: (a) it is dominated by lecturing which is boring and difficult to understand; (b) it is monotonous because of lack of various models or methods; (c) the topic is not interesting; (d) the task is mostly individual; (e) discussion is rarely used; (f) the students are passive; and (g) there is lack of speaking practices and exercises; (2) developing a model for teaching speaking using cooperative learning as follows: (a) planning: to choose the topic to speak by using think and talk in groups (TTW: think, talk, and write) or think in pairs (TPS: think, pair, and share); (b) outlining: to discuss in groups or pairs the main points which will be used to develop the topic; (c) drafting: to practice in groups or pairs developing the main points into dialogue, conversation, or role play; (d) revising/editing: using peer editing/exchange/correction or group work to check the mistakes in: content, organization, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation (all indicators of speaking skill); and (e) sharing: the group or pair presentation while the other groups and lecturer give comments and correction; and (3) a model for teaching speaking using cooperative learning is more effective than the existing model for teaching speaking because: (a) the students are more interested or motivated to speak in groups or pairs; (b) the students are more active working in groups or pairs; (c) the students are not ashamed to make mistakes; (d) the students learn from their peers and lecturer; and (e) it can develop all indicators of speaking.

Abstract

The golden age is an important period when children receive a wide range of knowledge. It takes place between two years of age to six.  The initial process of early literacy starts also here in which several components state meaningful supports; vocabulary, print knowledge, phonological awareness, emergent reading, and arts. Three previous studies for this article show that the integration between learning at home and at school for the supports is not yet integrated. Based on the research results that are relevant to this study, it was found that children whose parent were optimizing the chance of receiving a stimulus language well, will grow into adults who are capable in terms of language as well as having a tendency to more easily understand the readings five times greater than adults who in his childhood did not receive the same stimuli. The general objective of this study was to find the concept of activity-based meaningful language activities either through sub reading, storytelling, dialogue, as well as arts of toddlers. The specific objective of this study was to: Discover how the existing conditions in similar processes and guidelines that are applied in other countries as a comparison; Finding the design and guidelines for teacher and parent  in facilitating emergent  reading and arts;  Finding the effectiveness  of  on-going  literacy learning activities. Mix methods applied here took 40 teachers and 40 parents lived in Madiun and surroundings. The first questionnaire and observation for both participants showed what real emergent and arts activities for their children and also whether those acts were standardized or not. The second part was sharing the program and figuring the guidelines which lead them act as the target shared. And the last one was the evaluation which promoted observation, interviews and documents from the progress.

Abstract

In teaching learning literature, students are not only given by the materials which have the cognitive aspect but also they need to be given education which is related to the values of morale which can be utilized in their life. The values of morale heavily contained in literary works either that Indonesian literary works or literary works from English or American. Literary works which can be given to the students can be in the form of drama, prose or poetry. Poetry represnts one of literary works which can be used in giving morale education in teaching learning literature and can be integrated also in teaching learning language which is related to four language skills those are speaking, reading, writing and listening. In teaching learning process, a lecturer does not only give materials theoretically but also he or she gives assignments which are capable to train students’ creativity. A lecturer is also helped if he or she has a good textbook which can be used as a source in giving poetry materials theoretically and practically. Besides that, students are given an assignment to analyze the content of poems, they are also given an assignment to read the poems, and then they are asked to sing the poems with their own creativity with music which they make by themselves in a team-work. It will be very helpful for the students in comprehending teaching learning literature and it is able to sharpen their emotion, empathy, sympathy, and respect to others through poems.

Abstract

This study was designed to describe the form of teacher’s domination in classroom interactions and explainlanguage features which represent it. This qualitative study employed the critical discourse analysis model by Fairclough. Data was obtained from the speech produced by six secondary school teachers in Luwu Timur Regency, South Sulawesi. The data was collected through recording, field-notes, and interviews. The data was analyzed using Miles and Huberman flow model which covers: (1) condensation, (2) data presentation, (3) temporary data deduction and verification, and (4) final conclusion making. The results of the study revealed that; (1) teachers controlled the classroom interactions by labelling students, threatening, making fun of students, underestimating, getting angry with them, giving punishment, expressing dissatisfaction/ disappointment, and emphasizing their authority; (2) language features which reflect teachers’ domination  tnthe teacher-students communication include: (a) the use of vocabulary, namely marginal vocabulary, metaphors, personal pronouns, and evaluative vocabulary; and (b) the use of grammars, of which aredeclarative sentences, imperative sentences, interrogative sentences, negative sentences, and modality. The research findings suggest teachers to develop qualified teacher-students interactions by avoiding the use of language features which imply teacher’s domination.

Abstract

There are some media which can be used in the teaching - learning process. One of them is hand-puppets. This media is different from the other hand-puppets because it is made personally for each theme, and here the researchers focused on the theme “Cita-Citaku”. This media is simple, economic, and efficient to be played. These media can also attract and build young learners’ imagination, because it is made from colourful-attractive fabric, like flannel. This study focuses on the implementation of hand-puppets as teaching media in “Cita-Citaku” theme for the fourth grader of SDN Gotputuk Blora, Central Java. This theme of teaching material is so important to be taught to the students so that they can understand well how to reach their dreams in the future. It is an R&D research. The data were collected by interviewing, giving tests, and observing the teachers and students, and taking the documentation. Based on the collected data, the students’ scores of the implementation of hand-puppets in “Cita-Citaku” theme were increased. The students characters on self-confidence, teamwork, hard-work, and curiosity were increased positively too. The suggestion to the teachers is they must be a facilitator, motivator, and innovator to the students. They must motivate their students to ask and give an opinion. For the next researcher(s), we suggest them to make the similar research about hand-puppets in different field and theme.
