Abstract

Listening practices have widely been conducted face to face in language laboratory for years in language laboratory. However, students’ interaction and collaboration were not much emphasized because of teacher-centred learning. The teaching of listening in language laboratory focuses primarily on how to answer comprehension questions correctly without any interactive discussion. Students just relied on teacher’s absolute role in language laboratory. Thus, the students were not independent in learning listening. Meanwhile, limited materials used in listening instruction are mostly influenced by teacher educator’s textbooks whose content lacked of authenticity. Promoting online learning in listening practices and evaluating students’ outcomes through peer-corrective feedback through learning platform were needed to enhance their comprehension. This article highlighted five central issues, including: (1) theoritical framework of online learning; (2) edmodo as a learning platform for online mediated listening tool; (3) the selection of authentic listening materials; (4) peer-collaborative correction in listening tasks; and (5) the development of students’ autonomous listening through online corrective feedbacks. The impacts of this article findings successfully contributed to support teachers’ educators face-to-face language laboratory based listening practices while promoting students’ collaboration, autonomy, and comprehension.

Abstract

This article is based on a classroom action research (CAR). In this research, I have acted as a Lecturerin CAR. This CAR has involved students in one class of Publishing Study Program Batch 6 Semester 3in Politeknik Negeri Media Kreatif (PoliMedia) Jakarta. By applying a cooperative learning strategy, Iset out to make magazines as a result of the writing assignments on English lesson. Magazines arechosen because the students have got writing and editing skills from English lesson, and layouting skillsfrom Digital Graphics lesson. It means that the students have been taught to write and edit manuscripts, and they also have learned how to design magazines cover and content. During sixteen weeks, thestudents followed the process of creating magazines. Finally, the students can increase their writing andediting capabilities, and thus help students to make their portfolios.

Abstract

Scientific attitude is an approach to investigations that benefits from certain traits namely; curiosity or inquisitiveness, objectivity, open-mindedness, perseverance, humility, ability to accept failure, and skepticism. Scientific attitude is one of benchmarks for the success of science learning process especially the level of understanding of the concept of physics. This study aims to analyse the students’ scientific attitude on learning heat and temperature with Cooperative Inquiry Labs (CIL) model at SMAN 6 Banda Aceh. This is a quasi experimental research with the class subject of X-MIA1 as a control class and X-MIA2 as an experimental class. Data collection technique used was by giving a questionnaire containing seven kinds of scientific attitude indicators to each student. The questionnaire in this study used a Likert scale with four categories of responses. Data tabulation was done by testing the average difference of two independent samples, indicated that tcount (10.94) > ttable (2.01) at the significant level of 5%, which means that there are significant differences in outcomes between the experimental and control classes. The results of questionnaire analysis showed that in the control class, there were four scientific attitude indicators which had high category, and the three other indicators were in medium category, whereas in the experimental class, there were five indicators with high category and two indicators with medium category. Based on the data of the analysis result of t test showed the scientific attitude of the students in both classes were tcount = 2.09 which was bigger than ttable = 2.01, and because of the significance of <0.05, it can be said that there was a significant difference after the learning process with CIL model.

Abstract

Posing question is a part of the interactions in the classroom, which represents thinking process of the person who asking question. The skill of posing question can be improved through lesson study. The research objective was to determine the role of Problem-based Learning based Lesson Study on the competence of teachers and students in asking questions. The research was a quasi-experiment, wich was participated by senior high school students as subjects of the research. Two homogenous classes was selected as samples by purposive random. Teacher and students’ competence was improved through Lesson Study, which consisted of plan, do and see. Questions were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively based on revised Bloom Taxonomy. Quantity of questions was analyzed by Manova. Results of the research: 1) lesson study had significantly improved teacher and students’ skills on asking questions; 2) The quality of teacher and students’ questions expanded into high dimension of knowledge, but no metacognitive questions were found; 3) The level of cognitive of students and teacher increased to the highest level (C6), but in a few number; 4) Teacher competence was argued has relevant influence to students’ skills on asking question

Abstract

As an inclusive university, Brawijaya University has accepted students with special needs in some differentstudy programs. Two of those are blind / visually impaired students who enrol English Language EducationStudy Program in which the program prepares the students to be English teachers. As a consequence, thestudents must be ready to do teaching practice in a public school when they are in the seventh semester. Thisstudy is going to find out the problems of the visually impaired students in conducting teaching practice in theschool. It also elaborates the teaching media and method that they need to support them to do teachingpractice.  The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. To get the data, the researchers interviewthe visual impairments, the two volunteers who become their peer assistant them during learning process inthe university, and the lecturer who becomes the advisor of the visually impaired students. Besides, observation is also important to know the application of teaching practice in their real class. The observationis done by recording the teaching activity conducted by the visually impaired students. The results of theinterview and the observation are used to formulate the needs of the visually impaired students in teachingprocess in the real school. This study gives benefit not only for the students in preparing their teachingpractice, but also for the institution to accommodate the needs of the visually impaired students for theirteaching process.

Abstract

Paradigm in education must be shifted from the old paradigm that refers to teoritist science into a novel paradigm that is applied science. To change the paradigm above, the science lesson is certainly necessary for the development and its learning model learning devices in accordance with the new paradigm in education (applied science). It required a learning model that can meet the new paradigm and leads to a discovery or creation of a product, namely the inquiry learning model oriented life skills through the application of Simple Scientific Method Skill (S2MS). This type of research is the development of research using a model of Dick and Carrey performed on the stage of development and dissemination. The trial is limited to vocational students in Ngawi East Java, Indonesia were divided by 2 groups of classes, namely the control class and experimental class. Data collection methods include validation of inquiry learning model (syllabus, lesson plans, teaching materials, worksheets, and assessment), observation, test evaluation of learning outcomes, student questionnaire responses. Data was analyzed using descriptive methods. The results showed that the group inquiry learning model oriented life skills through the simple scientific method skill (S2MS) proved effective in improving achievement in learning and creativity of students in learning science at vocational students in Ngawi East Java Indonesia. This is seen in the average value of science in the experimental class group was higher (80.25) than in group control class (70.20). Meanwhile, a group of student creativity aesthetically experimental class is higher (3.80) than the control class group (2.58).

Abstract

Religious education at schools in this country politically always become controversy. This controversy happens until now because there are “ideological battle” between nationalist community and Islamic community who want to establish an Islamic State. Long before Indonesia’s independence, there were three political aspirations about relationship between religion and state in Indonesia. It could be argued that the political dynamic of Indonesia is characterized by competition between those who want to establish an Islamic state and the nation-state, and communist state. There are many historical events which show that the controversy –especially between Islamic-state vs nation-state – actually still happens continually. This fact emphasizes that the aspirations or ideals about Islamic state are still surviving from time to time, generation to generation. Religious education which usually called religion subject is one of “ideological battle” arena. Since the beginning this subject had become a vehicle for realizing Shari’ah Islam inside the nation. During that time the policy of religion subject had developed into three stages. In the first stage subject was voluntary for state schools, and in the second stage subject was mandatory for state schools; and in the last stage is now legally obliged that religion subject should be implemented in all schools according to students’ religion and by the teachers who have the same religion.

Abstract

This paper presents Singapore’s initial teacher training and continuing professional development as apossible model of teacher education and preparation. Since the mid-1990s, several educational reforms and initiatives have been introduced into Singapore education with the goal of equipping her young citizens with knowledge and skills for a globalised economy and workforce, and for the challenges of the 21 st century. Teachers are the frontline of any educational endeavour, which means that teacher quality is paramount to its implementation. Thus, the Ministry of Education invested heavily in building the teacher workforce and enhancing its quality in pursuit of the desired educational outcomes. Increased and sustained teacher recruitment enlarged the teacher workforce. Stringent criteria were used to select suitably qualified applicants who went through intensive pre-service teacher training at Singapore’s sole teacher training institute, the National Institute of Education. Several policies were put in place to enable in-service teachers to continually develop and upgrade themselves professionally. For instance, every teacher was entitled to 100 hours per year of professional development. A multi-prong approach was deployed to encourage teachers’ participation in professional training and development. These included workshops or short courses for deepening knowledge of subjects taught and for enhancing pedagogical skills, and conference or seminar attendance for sharing teaching practices and broadening experiences. Teachers were also initiated into “life-long learning” with various sponsorship schemes to pursue masters or doctoral level studies. On the belief that an educational system is as good as the quality of its teachers, this paper concludes with a discussion of Singapore education’s continuing journey towards innovations in teacher development.
