Abstract

This study examines the Jamasan Kyai Upas ritual, a Mataram Yogyakarta heritage still practiced by the Tulungagung community. While traditionally associated with the Yogyakarta Sultanate, the Kyai Upas spear, a symbolic heirloom of Tulungagung, remains a significant cultural element. The study explores the ritual’s historical continuity, its symbolic meaning, and the community’s beliefs surrounding the heirloom. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, this research employs Elkins’ (1998) theory of spirituality, which emphasizes being and experiencing as awareness of transcendence and core values in life. Data was collected through interviews to link cultural beliefs (being) and experiences (experiencing) with the ritual. Findings reveal that (1) the Kyai Upas spear connects Tulungagung’s identity with the Yogyakarta Sultanate and (2) the spear symbolizes good fortune and safety for the Tulungagung community, grounded in historical and contemporary contexts.

Abstract

Nyale is a tradition of catching (picking up) sea worms. Pasola is a horse-drawn war between two groups of participants, throwing javelins to knock down their opponents. Nyale and pasola have been passed down from generation to generation in the western part of Sumba, especially in Southwest Sumba and West Sumba Regencies. This tradition takes place in February and March every year. This unique tradition needs to be publicized through various platforms, so that the inheritance of values can be more widely known. One of them is changing the vehicle into literary works. This article will explain the nature of nyale and pasola; Nyale and Pasola myths; and the inheritance of the Nyale and Pasola oral traditions through literary works. This question was answered through participatory qualitative field research and literature study. The theory used is the sociological theory of literature with the support of oral tradition theory, myth theory, and change form (vehicle transfer theory) theory. The results explain that nyale and pasola are traditions that underline the importance of honesty and expressing gratitude for the harvest. The meaning of nyale and pasola is living together to support traditions, the role of horses in pasola, the role of traditional elders, as well as various traditional wisdom as teachings of life. This idea about the meaning of nyale and pasola was then transferred into a literary work, the novel Pasola.

Abstract

The arrival of European colonizers led to the disruption of the nature and ecosystem. As the indigenous people with a close relationship to nature, Native Americans express their grief and anxiety about the condition of nature through literary work. The study presented in the present article aims to scrutinize three selected poems by Joy Harjo “Remember”, “Praise the Rain”, and “I am a Prayer” to see how the poet expresses her ecological grief and anxiety. The lines and stanzas of each poem are analyzed using the theory of intrinsic elements and the five stages of grief by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. The researchers use a descriptive qualitative method and employ a psychological approach to reveal the speaker's suffering in the poem psychologically in which she feels grieved because of the loss of nature. The findings were that there were five stages of grief portrayed in the poems implicitly, that is, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The speaker’s grief and anxiety can be seen from the personification, repetition, and imagery used in the poems. Joy Harjo offers a different way to experience the stage of ecological grief and anxiety. She invites us to honor the journey of grief with empathy, wisdom, and a profound appreciation for the natural world. Harjo invites a deeper awareness that is both accepting of past wounds and open to future possibilities. The acceptance of grief is a crucial step toward reconnection. It is only by accepting the grief of what has been lost that one can truly remember, appreciate, and care for what remains.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the short story "Kisah Sebuah Celana Pendek" by Idrus to uncover new interpretations regarding the representation of resistance carried out by colonial subjects or groups. The theoretical framework employed in this study is subaltern theory—an idea referring to groups considered voiceless or incapable of speaking—through a postcolonial critical reading inspired by Gayatri Spivak. The analysis method utilizes deconstruction to open up the possibility of generating new meanings from the discourse. The findings of this analysis reveal that there is resistance against colonial hegemonic power, as represented by Kusno, who stands as a figure of the subaltern. Interestingly, Kusno’s resistance is shaped by an existential inner struggle, manifesting as overt defiance and quiet resistance. Unfortunately, this resistance is ambivalent, as it simultaneously offers hope while exposing the subject’s powerlessness in facing reality. This, in turn, reaffirms the notion that the subaltern is perpetually trapped within the power hegemony.

Abstract

The digital narratives within virtual tourist communities on Bali highlight the island’s rich cultural heritage through diverse themes and discussions. Platforms like TripAdvisor, Facebook, and Reddit play a significant role in shaping perceptions, providing a space where travelers share experiences and insights. Key themes include romanticized portrayals, spirituality, cultural exchange, and ethical considerations, collectively shaping a nuanced digital portrayal of Bali. This analysis was carried out using qualitative methods to explore these narratives and uncover underlying motivations, sentiments, and cultural insights shared within the communities. Ultimately, these discussions encourage responsible tourism and promote Bali’s unique cultural values on a global scale. The significance of this research lies in demonstrating how digital spaces can foster meaningful connections between global audiences and local cultures. By promoting environmental and cultural awareness, these virtual communities help preserve Bali’s identity and heritage in the face of increasing mass tourism.
