Abstract

: Students in higher education are ordered to be competent in English. This happens as the response of high requirement in using English for larger uses nowadays. Consequently, higher education nowadays provides English tutorial to prepare the students  to be competent English users, including mastering grammar. This research was conducted in order to discover students’ participation, grade, and score improvement as the aspects of applying consciousness towards English grammar.The research adopted mixed method approach. The researcher collected the data by observation, tests, and questionnaires. The participants were the students in English tutorial class from the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business and the Faculty of Islamic Education and Teacher Training. The objective of this research are to monitor the students’ sincerity working on the learned lessons and to make senses their performance with the supports of their assessment records. The results showed various dynamics on the students’ existence being part in the lessons.High participation was done by the students along with various grades. All observed students showed positive self-correction and increasing score improvement with their heterogenous mechanisms.This research notices that the students have motivation to be mastered, but their experience and exposure on English grammar affect their assessment results. However, the data reveal that their efforts remain improved as reflected in their track records in the lessons.

Abstract

A lot of students encounter obstacles  in mastering listening skill of report text. The goals of study  are to describe the influence of applying  learning cell and utilizing of Pinacoy toward listening skill especially in report text  of  Second Year Students of Social Program in MAN Sukoharjo. The study is also to describe the students’s  listening ability  of applying  Learning cell and the utilizing of Pinacoy .The technique is utilized to collect the data in this study  is classroom action research. The data validity of this study uses interview, observation, and test. The results of study are that there  are influence of  applying  learning cell and the utilizing of Pinacoy toward listening skill especially in report text and the average of students’ scores can reach KKM  (passing grade standard) after the researcher applied learning cell and utilized Pinacoy toward listening skill.

Abstract

Literacy refers to a set of skills for being literate of texts existing in society. There are many kinds of information penetrated among us. Being literate is now not only just represented by reading and writing as we simply do every day orthographically. It remains on basic literacy. This one itself has been improved for considering economic development by adding arithmetic skill. Literacy, with those language competences, considers its contribution for society in this modern age. It is considered as resource to reflect quality of each person. This functional literacy takes us for being functionally beneficial for surrounding environment.  For dealing with the information around us which is massively spread, critical literacy should be optimized to make sense and take stance. In higher education context like university, scientific literacy is highly required to apply the subject for phenomena in the society. Along with types of literacy, how are their contributions on society? Being capable on multiple literacy levels is believed as the right way for familiarizing social phenomenon so that literate people have more chances to get possibilities for themselves up to strengthen citizen involvement for their nation as well. Literacy is finally constructed from optimizing each citizen on nation’s development.

Abstract

Good, true, and polite personality expressions reflect ones noble character. The use of the phrase when one is expressing the intent to others, should be conveyed in polite form. This politeness is reflected in the use of expressions in communication. This research aimed to identify the forms, use, and local wisdom of expression phatic opening and closing the conversation in the Java community, especially in the area of Surakarta. The research shows that variations in the forms of expression of phatic. This expression aims to start a conversation, ask permission, refine the command, grateful, subtle rejection, words of sympathy, and apologized. The result showed that in order to establish harmony in their interaction in the community and as a form of politeness, found various expressions phatic in the Java community, especially in the area of Surakarta is an expression sugeng rawuh, kula nuwun, matur nuwun, nyuwun tulung, nyuwun pangapunten, mangga, kados pundi, sugeng ...atau wilujeng ..., katuran pinarak, ndherek bingah, and ndherek belasungkawa.

Abstract

Kajian ini berfokus pada penggunaan gaya bahasa eufemisme dalam rubrik obituari harian Kompas. Objek penelitian ini berupa kosakata yang menunjukkan kekhasan penggunaan gaya bahasa. Data dalam penelitian ini mencakup 43 kosakata dari rubrik Obituari harian Kompas yang terbit September 2015 s.d. April 2016. Kajian ini bersifat deskriptif kualitatif dengan berfokus pada struktur dan fungsi eufemisme yang ditemukan. Data diperoleh dengan teknik catat dan kemudian diklasifikasikan berdasarkan konteksnya. Analisis data memanfaatkan metode padan referensial. Berdasarkan bentuknya, pemakaian gaya bahasa eufemisme mencakup tataran kata dan frasa. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa gaya bahasa eufemisme yang digunakan dalam rubrik obituari Kompas memiliki latar belakang kesantunan, prestise, dan mengagungkan jasa dari orang yang diberitakan.

Abstract

This study was aimed at analyzing the Indonesian translation of spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors made by autistic character in Flower for Algernon novel. It also analyzes  translation techniques, methods, ideology, qualities of the translation. The method applied was descriptive-qualitative with the data in the form of translated words and phrases indicating spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors made by the autistic character. The primary data sources were Flower for Algernon novel along with its translation version in Indonesian. Meanwhile, the secondary data sources were informants who gave information on the accuracy, acceptability, and readability of translation. The process of collecting data used documentation, questionnaire distribution, and focus group discussion (FGD) technique whereas the sampling technique applied is purposive sampling. The findings of this research show that there are 309 data of words containing spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors. Four translation techniques are used by translator namely graphology normalizations, established equivalent, compensation, and deletion. The translation method used tends to be established equivalent with domestication ideology. The translation of words with errors by graphology normalization techniques produced accurate translations with decreases in acceptability. This is because the translator removes the autism markers from the source language to the target language.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out the application of English for Generic Purposes (EGP) materials to the Air Traffic Controller (ATC) class in learning English at Civil Aviation Safety and Engineering Academy (CASEA), Makassar and the students’ perceptions toward the application the materials. This research employed descriptive qualitative research design. It applied cluster random sampling technique. The informants of this research were nineteen that consist of one lecturer and 18 ATC students of CASEA Makassar. The data were collected by observations and interviews. The observations were conducted to gather the data about the application of the materials to the students while the interviews were done to support and strengthen the data from observations whereas the interviews were also purposed for analyzing the students’ perception toward the application of the materials. The result of this research showed that (1) the application of EGP materials to ATC students of CASEA Makassar was quite effective since the lecturer had various ways in teaching English and could teach the students based on their needs as aviation students  and (2) most of the students felt that both ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and EGP were so beneficial for them since as aviation cadets, they are required to be able to communicate in English. Despite the necessities for learning EGP and ESP, most of the students contended that ESP was more essential in their working environments as aircraft controllers.

Abstract

This study describes (1) motivation in learning English, (2) influential factors in learning English, (3) influential motivation, and (4) ways to maintain and improve motivation to learn English.  This study used descriptive qualitative design. The subjects of the study were 20 EFL students sitting in semester I of STMIK Handayani Makassar in 2016.  Self report was used to collect data on motivation and interview was to explore in-depth features of motivation. The results show: (1) all 20 subjects were motivated in learning English; (2) factors affecting  motivation include internal factors, i.e. goal setting, expectancy, self confidence and  external factors, i.e. lecturer, classroom environment, activities, materials, the relevance, and feedback; (3) dominan influential motivation is instrumental motivation, and (4) to maintain and improve students’ motivation, English lecturers should use English in students’ proficiency, adaptable materials, comfortable classroom, communicative, creative,  patient, enthusiastic,  relax and friendly-smiling.

Abstract

This research was aimed at identifying  the uses of disfemism on BBC Online news texts at the level of grammatical units and describing their backgrounds as well as analyzing their forms and qualities of translations, particularly from the aspect of acceptability in Indonesian language. The method used for analysis was content analysis with disfemism on BBC Online news texts as the object of analysis. The data were in the forms of linguistic units of the news texts containing disfemism. The data were then analyzed by using referential comparison technique with semantic and translation approach to understand the meanings of disfemism and pragmatic comparison for analyzing the backgrounds.The results show that the grammatical units of disfemism on BBC Online news texts were at the levels words, phrases, and clauses. In addition, no significant change of form was found in the translations.There were found 10 different reasons underlying the uses of disfemism on BBC Online news texts. Meanwhile, dealing with the acceptability, most of the translations of disfemism can be counted as acceptable

Abstract

Mastering a good strategy in teaching speaking constitutes one of the most important factors in teaching for educator. This is particularly so when student in other countries should speak English that basically is not his mother tongue. Good strategy in teaching speaking has been assumed as having a significant impact on students’ speaking skill. This study addressed the application and influence of a teaching strategy toward speaking skill for students. This study was conducted to17 students at Level 6 Section 12 and one teacher at CELPAD of IIUM. This study utilized mixed method between quantitative and qualitative by collecting data through observation, questionnaires and interview. The findings indicate that discussion strategy applied by the teacher was effective to improve students speaking skills. Students were more interested and motivated in speaking English using discussion.
