Abstract

 This research is aimed at finding out the effectiveness of using the phonetic method in improving students’ speaking at civil vocational high school number four (SMKN 4) in Palopo. This research employed pre-experimental design. The population of this research is the first grade students at SMKN 4 Palopo. It consists of 2 classes and the total number of population is 41 students. This research used cluster sampling technique, the sample of this research is the class B where consists 20 students.  The instrument in collecting the data is speaking test. The treatment of this research is phonetic aspect in six times meeting, based on the data analysis, the writer find out the mean score of pretest is 36.80 it is classified very poor and mean score of posttest is 65.00 it is classified average. Its mean that data show students’ speaking ability is effective improve by using phonetic metod. The result of statistical analysis for level of significant (p=0.05) with degree freedom (df)=N-1, where (N-20), df=19. The probability value is smaller than α (0.00 < 0.05). It indicates that the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted and null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. The result give the confirmation about phonetic method can improve students’ ability in speaking.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the effectiveness of using interview in using the simple present tense.  This research used pre experimental research method.  The population of this research is first class of SMAN 1 Soe Kabupaten Timur Tengah Selatan (TTS) NTT. The total number of population is 142 students in four classes.  The researcher used random sampling technique. There were 20 students  as sample of the research.  The writer took 5 students from each class. The instrument of the research was written test. The findings which gained through pre test and post test showed the significant development of students’ ability in using simple present tense. The total mean score of the students’ scores in pre test was 3.85 and post test was 6.8. The result t test shows that the “to” is bigger that “tt” (17.5 > 2.093). This indicates that null hypothesis is rejected, therefore using interview is effective in teaching simple present tense at SMAN 1 Soe Kabupaten Timur Tengah Selatan (TTS) NTT.

Abstract

English has been used in enormous important purposes to communicate in international level such as for academic and commerce. English as an International Language (EIL) is the use of English that enables native speakers and non-native speakers to communicate. However, there has been debate on how to teach EIL in language classroom specifically to the exposure of either the native language culture or the non-native one. This article will first define the notion of EIL before exploring the issues. Finally, this article will discuss implication on the roles of teachers regarding existing principles of EIL and student English learning

Abstract

The objectives of the research is to find out whether or not the use of KWL strategy is more effective than non KWL strategy in improving students’ interpretive comprehension. The research applied quasi experimental design in which the researcher used two groups namely experimental group with treatment by using KWL strategy and control group non KWL strategy. The subject of this research was the eighth grade students of SMP Neg. 9 Palopo with the number of sample is 60 students, 30 students in experimental group and 30 students in control group. The researcher gave pretest before treatment to both groups and gave treatment to experimental group in six meetings and the last the researcher gave posttest. The data were collected through reading comprehension test in objective test form. The research result indicated that the use of KWL strategy is more effective than non KWL strategy in improving students’ interpretive comprehension. It was proven by the t-test of students’ posttest on this level of comprehension between experimental and control group where Probability value was lower than alpha (.000<0.05). It indicates that null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted because P-value < α.

Abstract

This research covers the ability of the student at Politeknik Negeri Ujung Pandang in mastering simple past tense.  The problem statement of this research is  How is ability of the student at Politeknik Negeri Ujung Pandang in Mastering Simple Past Tense?. This research used descriptive research method.  It isused to describe the ability of the student at Politeknik Negeri Ujung Pandang in mastering simple past tense. The instrument used in this research is test through completing uncompleted short story.  The research is focused on the student at Politeknik Negeri Ujung Pandang.  There are 20 students as sample, which were taken by using random sampling. The collection data is done by asking the students to complete the uncompleted reading story. The students were given forty minutes to complete the story.  In analyzing data, the writer scores the students’ test. Then, the researcher calculating the means score of students. After that, the researcher categorizes the students’ scores. The result of the research shows that the ability of the student at Politeknik Negeri Ujung Pandang in mastering simple past tense is bad. The mean score was 2.9. This implies that the students’ ability should be improved through more intensive material on simple past.

Abstract

Listen English Full Audio is a smartphone application that can be downloaded freely from a smartphone. In this modern Era smartphone is not a rare thing anymore because most of the students even all the students have their own gadget or smartphone. So, the students can use this application wherever and whenever they want. The aims of this research are to find out whether the use of Listen English Full Audio Application can help the students to improve their listening skill. Furthermore, it also focuses in analyzing the students’ perception toward the application. The method used in this research is Quan-Qual method with a type of quasi experimental design namely regression discontinuity design. The population is the first semester of STKIP Muhammadiyah Palopo students academic year 2017/2018. The total number of population was 240 students. Related to the sampling technique, this research uses the combination of random sampling and non random sampling technique. Random sampling is used to decide the sample of the quantitative analysis and non random sampling to decide the qualitative analysis. The data are collected by test which is analyze by using SPSS 20 program and interview which is analyze by using open coding. The result showed that Listen English Full Audio is affective in improving the students’ listening skill. Furthermore, all students agree that English Listen English Full Audio is a good supporting media.

Abstract

This article is about overview of language learning in sense relation. The aim of this article is to know sameness and oppositeness in sense relation of language learning. The method was based on library research. Study about language, so study about the meaning of that language because language is a tool of communication to each other. Semantic is study about the meaning, the meaning of a language could be seen from its relationship between words. The sense of one word is related to another sense. In this case, the result of this research is there are two main groups of sense relations. The first group is the sense relations with regard to the similarity or sameness (synonymy, hyponymy, entailment, paraphrase, metonymy, anaphora, presupposition). The second one is the sense relations of oppositeness (antonymy, anomaly, ambiguity, polysemy, homonymy, contradiction). Those are explained in this article.

Abstract

English kids song used by the teacher at K-APEL Makassar. The list was consisted of some parts such as title, theme of the songs, the diction by the writer of the songs (diction) and the last is the kinds of cultural values appears in the songs. Culture can be showed by songs and through the songs the students are guided to know the culture from different culture and the students learn more about new vocabularies in songs. It is fun and interesting media for the teacher as educator to explore the ability of students to recognize some cultures. The result of this research shows that the kid songs frequently used by the English teacher at K-APEL Makassar were very various in culture values presented in the songs concluding profession, food, and activities. One of the song there were some positive characters such as a postman who never the status of the customer whether rich or poor. Furthermore, the songs frequently used by the teacher give some cultural knowledge to the students that are really needed by the students.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out the effectiveness of using pictured story to upgrade vocabulary at the first year student at SMP Negeri 3 Sabbang. The method of this research was pre-experimental method and this research was the second year students of first year at SMP Negeri 3 Sabbang. The researcher took 30 students to represent the total number of population. Pictured story is significantly effective in teaching narrative text to upgrade students vocabulary of the first year students of SMPN 3 Sabbang. It can be proved by the result of students in pre test and post test. Pictured story is an appropriate method to teach English in junior high school because the students have experiences that almost the same with the story. So, they are curious to know the meaning of the story. Furthermore, it can make classroom situation attractive, interesting and make the students enjoy getting the material, also the students relax during the treatment process.

Abstract

This article describes the concept of learning style and the learners’ characteristic of each learning style of students in language learning.  In the first part of this article the writer describes the learning style. Then the writer will related the learning style to language acquisition.  There are 3 types of language learning style described by Tekavcic and Dimovski namely visual, auditory and tactile funtions of someone in processing information. The three main types of learning style are not absolute, of course.  Many learners learn through a variety of senses.  Certain students might equally be strong in the three perceptual modalities, or in two perceptual modalities of either combination
