Abstract

This study talks about how to use multimodal analysis in a covid-19 advertisement. This study is trying to figure out what the covid-19 ad looks like and how it makes you think. It also wants to look at the linguistic and visual aspects of the messages. This is how the research was done: It used a qualitative method, which meant that the data were taken from YouTube and then turned into five images. This study uses Halliday's theory to figure out how Cheong talks and uses visual elements (GSP). In the covid-19 ad, there are visible and linguistic elements that show the process of GSP. As you can see, there are five leads, one display, five primary announcements, five secondary announcements, one call and visit, and one tag for each. Material Process 11, Actors 6, Circumstances 3, Location 1, and Goals 10 are all parts of the linguistic ideation function.

Abstract

The theory used in this research was proposed by Freud, (1921) to analyze Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder found in the movie “Cherry” movie by Russo Brothers. The movie will be the data source to analyze cause of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Mental illness is the main topic that sometime portrayed in the movie or novel. This research will be focused on the cause of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder from the utterances and narrations by the characters in the movie. The research will be used descriptive qualitative method of the research by (Creswell, 2013) to conduct the data. The researchers will be analyzed the utterances and narrations from the characters in the movie “Cherry.” The utterances and narrations discovered in the movie will be classified used theory causes of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder proposed by Davison, (2012) which were genetic, environmental, brain structure and psychological causes.  The observational method and non-participatory technique as the methods of collecting data will be used in this research. The result will be discovered that there were 10 utterances, narrations, or actions of cause of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder by the characters in the movie. They are included 3 data discovered as genetic causes and 7 data discovered as environmental causes.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to produce teaching materials for Micro teaching subject based on Self Esteem to students of the English Education Study Program with dimensions of respect and self-respect, courage and ability in communication and confidence in one's own abilities. The elements in the module are tips and motivation, exercises/practices and summaries and formative tests in each chapter. The module was developed by taking into account the value of its validity, practicality and effectiveness. The approach used in the research is Research and Development research or development with the ADDIE development model. The trial was conducted on 5th semester students in the English Education study program, Palopo State Islamic Institute. The output in this research is a module for microteaching teaching and is published as an ISBN book by IKAPI member publishers.

Abstract

This research presents a research report on the using of applying Herringbone Technique and Numbered Head Together Technique for students reading skill at  SD Kalam Kudus 2 Medan . The objective is to find out the effect of using Herringbone Technique and Numbered Head Together Technique on students reading skill. The subjects of the study were grade 3 students of SD Kalam Kudus. They were divided into three groups. The first and the second groups are (Experimental Group). They were taught by Herringbone Technique and Numbered Head Together Technique in reading recount text, while the third group (Control Group) was taught by Herringbone Technique and Numbered Head Together Technique. The technique of data analysis used t-test. In analyzing the data the mean of the students score for pre-test in experimental group one (Herringbone Technique) is 59.16 the mean of the students score for post-test in experimental group two is 91.83. The mean of the students score for pre-test in experimental group two (Numbered Head Together Technique) is 45 the mean of the students score for post-test  in experimental group two is 69.16. The mean for pre-test in control group is 46.66, and the mean for post-test in control group two is 56.16. The conclusion is that the using of Herringbone Technique is more effective than Numbered Head Together Technique.  It is suggested than teachers should apply this technique as one of technique to improve students’ comprehension in reading text.

Abstract

This research is presented to discuss the script of “Inside Out” animated movie as the source of the data, which describes the narrative of a child who must adapt to her new environment and involves a lot of emotions. This study aims to reveal how the psychological message is conveyed in this movie script using the theory of van Dijk Design in Critical Discourse Analysis in Microstructural Text Level Analysis. Descriptive qualitative research method is used to explore and understand the central phenomenon, as well as content analysis techniques, which are used to interpret the messages contained in the movie script and the main ideas of the research topic. The result revealed: this movie is easily understood by children since the script writers use the basic phrases; humans have a very well-developed memory at the age of a child's golden age which can shape the child's personality and enter the subconscious memory, the human brain can also produce a thought or idea, including imagination. Based on the results, it can be concluded that human brain is able to record all memories that have occurred during human life and the human head can produce various kinds of emotions that appear according to the feelings or circumstances that are being experienced.

Abstract

English has been taught in face-to-face class. However, since Covid-19 exploded into a global pandemic and Indonesia confirmed the first case on 2 March 2, 2020, the local government implement a policy to dismiss schools for avoiding a wider spread of the virus in schools. Covid-19 shifted the way students learn from the traditional face-to-face class to long-distance classes or what is called online class. Still, the way online class is something very new for both students and teachers. As a result, the objective of this study is to find the students’ perception of e-learning in English Language Education in Universitas Internasional Batam, this study is conducted. The quantitative method was used by conducting a survey toward 79 students in English Language Education Department. The instrument of data collection were close-ended questions and interview. By concerning the advantage, confidence, effectiveness, and efficiency of utilizing e-learning, the result shows that the average score of the categories is 2.915 which is categorized as positive perception of e-learning.

Abstract

In a conversation, it must have a meaning or purpose in the form of a message and it is interrelated. This study aims to identifying the reference categories that are often used and to analyze the construction of reference in film Midnight in Paris. The method used in this study is a qualitative approach that use descriptive analysis. The data collected from the film were then analyzed descriptively. The result shows that the most dominant type of reference used in film is Name and referent. In a film the mention of a name either a place name or a person's name is a normal and frequent phenomenon moreover that 'name' would be the best word to use in order to make identify or refers to something or someone successful and from a person's name and place name. It can refer or interpret the meaning intended in a person's utterance to the listener. Furthermore, a listener or reader can find out the intent of the speaker or the sender of the message which must have a relationship with each other. Furthermore, the researcher found that the way to construct the reference in the movie is by looking at the nouns or verbs that are present in the conversation, such as proper names, indefinite nouns or definite nouns, if in the sentence there are elements that have been mentioned, it can be said that the sentence is said included in the reference.Keywords: message; meaning;reference;identify

Abstract

This research aim to find out the effectiveness of using the flipped learning method in improving students’ speaking skill. This research employed quasi-experimental method. The subject of this research were two groups, the experimental and the control group of the third semester students of Tadris Bahasa Inggris STAIN Majene. The data of this research were collected through pretest and post-test. The data of this research were analyzed by using SPSS. The result of the research reveal that the students’ post-test in experimental experiment class, the minimum results were 20 and the maximum score was 60 with an average score of 32,00. While in the control class, after the researcher gave an pre-test, the score was 20 and the maximum value was 44 with an average value of  33,71. And then, the researcher gave a post-test without doing treatment, the result of the minimum score was 20 and the maximum score was 60, so the average score was 37,33. The increasing of the value after the experiment class being given a treatment from the average value 24,57 to 32,00.  The mean result for the experimental class is -7.429, with a standard deviation of 6.727 so that H1 is accepted because the value of sig < Alpha or 0.000 < 0.005. Based on these data, it can be concluded that there is a difference in the average learning outcomes of students in the experimental class using the flipped learning method to improve their speaking skills.Key words: Flipped learning, speaking skill

Abstract

This research was conducted in the odd semester of 2021-2022. The approach used is a systematic literature review. This study followed the seven stages of Petticrew and Roberts’s systematic review: defining the research question or hypothesis, determining the type of study, conducting a comprehensive literature search, filtering the search results, assessing the included studies, and synthesizing the studies. and assessing heterogeneity among studies(Petticrew & Roberts, 2006). The researcher used Publish or Perish and Atlas.ti 8 to help this study. This study aims to determine the form and effectiveness of the influence of online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The results of the study found that there were psychological and physical effects and learning outcomes of students during online learning. This study also found several strategies used during online learning. This study suggests that the government through universities should provide adequate infrastructure for lecturers and students to organize online learning during Covid-19. Standards for organizing and training for lecturers to organize online learning should be carried out as soon as possible. Counseling guidance for students who have problems needs to be prepared by both the government and universities.

Abstract

Many studies use a developmental design for media such as flipbooks, but there is small research that focuses on the implementation of flipbooks for English lessons for formative assessment. This study aims to explain the procedure and the experience of using flipbooks for English lessons for formative assessment because it is fully integrated into the teaching and learning process. A teacher and 8_grade students taking an International Class Program (ICP) were observed and interviewed. This study shows that the implementation of using flipbooks for learning English for formative assessment can be implemented well in schools that have technological means to support them. Some students feel like it is fun and practical to use flipbooks but there are also some who even feel uncomfortable using flipbooks.
