Abstract

This study comes from the wide and huge effect of the pandemic Covid-19 in almost all aspects of human life. The over-reaction and various responses from society bring polemic in mitigation works that the number of infected patients by Covid-19 virus raise from time to time. Islam has actually paid attention to the problem of pandemics and epidemics as explained in the Qur’an and Hadith. On the other hand, Indonesian Muslim society has a strong tendency to the Qur’an as the main source of life teaching and guidance. Therefore, the interpretation on Qur’anic verses related to pandemic mitigation in the book of Tafsīr Nusantara, that is Tafsīr Marāḥ Labīdh written by Syaikh Nawawī al-Bantanī and its relevance in the present context. This is a qualitative study that uses the inductive method and contextual approach to explain the interpretation. At last, this study infers some conclusions. First, Syaikh Nawawī sees the pandemics and epidemics as the examination and test (muṣībah) from Allah SWT to all humankind. Second, Syaikh Nawawī explains that the Qur’ān orders humans to be alert to the coming pandemic and plague in the same manner as the act of facing the coming of enemies in war.

Abstract

This article describes the interpretation of the Qur’an with the theo-anthropocentric paradigm as a solution in responding to the crisis experienced by Muslims in the modern industrial era. The backwardness of Muslims in the current era is more due to their perspective on their religion, which is still within the traditional-agrarian framework of thinking. For this reason, a solution is needed to view interpretation in the modern industrial era. The research method used is descriptive-analytical with the cultural interpretation framework of Cliffort Gertz. The finding is that the perspective of interpretation in the modern-industrial era will always be related to the discourse on the development of Islamic studies, which includes three things; religious texts (Qur'an and Hadith), religion (Islam), and society (Muslims). Through Geertz's conception of cultural interpretation, the Qur’an becomes a symbol of a religious phenomenon that can be understood through the community's social activities. This conception necessitates that the Qur’an is part of that culture and will continue to dialogue and adapt to the changing paradigms of the times. In this context, the interpretation of the Qur’an in the modern-industrial era must apply a theo-anthropocentric paradigm, namely by developing a religious interpretation that is theologically in line with faith in Allah, epistemologically by human experience, and axiologically in favor of human destiny.

Abstract

This study discusses one issue, namely the interpretation of the gurus of Majlis Ulama' Indonesia on the verses of religious moderation from the aspect of faith in the Qur'an. This study is a qualitative study. The data of this study is obtained through two sources. First, primary data from in-depth interview techniques to the master teachers who are members of the West Lombok Indonesian Ulema Council community. Second, secondary data obtained through documentation, namely data collection in the form of scientific books and scientific journals. The analysis approach used is content analysis. In this case, researchers analyzed the results of interviews and available documents, resulting in themes. This study found that the verses that show moderation in the Qur'an from the perspective of creed can be categorised into four: first, faith and disbelief as a private matter; second, guidance and hidayah only belong to Allah SWT; third, differences and diversity of beliefs as the will (irādah) of Allah; and fourth, the Prophet was sent as a bearer of good news. The informants emphasised their interpretations from an Islamic da'wah perspective. This study contributes to promoting a moderate understanding of Islamic teachings, maintaining interfaith harmony, and building a harmonious and tolerant society.

Abstract

The position and function of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in Islamic law is viewed differently among hadith scholars. The modern group of hadith experts see that there are two dimensions in the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh): the dimension as an apostle and the dimension as an ordinary human being. Meanwhile, the group of classical hadith experts believes that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) only has one dimension, namely, as an apostle. Classical hadith scholars argue that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was a reflection of revelation, whether it was related to matters of sharia or related to humanity. The group of modern hadith experts made the concept of a prophet sunnah divided into sunnah tasri’iyyah and sunnah gairu tasyri’iyyah. Meanwhile, the group of classical hadith experts emphasizes that all of the Prophet’s sunnah are tasyri’iyah in nature. This paper aims to bridge the two groups of hadith experts by offering the terminology sunnah sābitah and sunnah mutaghaiyyirāh as an alternative typology of sunnah in the contemporary era. This paper is a descriptive-historical-reconstructive literature research using a history of ideas approach. The findings in this article are sunnah ṡābitah is a sunnah that must be implemented permanently regardless of time and place. In contrast, sunnah mutaghaiyyirāh is a sunnah of the Prophet whose implementation changes according to time and place. Sunnah ṡābitah is related to aqidah, worship, halal and haram, and general rules of muamalah. In addition to the four categories above, it is included in the sunnah mutaghaiyyirāh

Abstract

This research described an approach to building Religious Moderation according to the Theophany concept, which is an attempt to decide an attitude and action in life through a wise, unbiased perspective, and risk beneficial to many parties. Building religious moderation means forming attitudes and actions to avoid harming oneself, others, and the environment. Furthermore, achieving this process using the Theophany concept enables the formation of attitudes by considering human compassion and contempt, generosity and stinginess, as well as sensitivity and hostility, which are consistently correlated with moral and religious norms. The formation of religious moderation in one's soul brings many benefits to the world. Therefore, it is important to build this concept to determine right from wrong according to certain religious claims. These decisions are based on values, norms, morals, beliefs, and other considerations beneficial for living life. Theophany concept builds the idea that the truth in acting and behaving is God's business as the most righteous judge. In conclusion, building religious moderation is to form a personal soul with moral values beneficial for human life without being free from the justification of certain religious truths.

Abstract

This article examines the concept of Islamic Wasathiyah from the perspective of readers of Sundanese, Javanese, and Malay local commentaries. The study employed a qualitative approach, engaging readers of Al-Ibriz in Pati, Central Java, Lanyepaneun in Ciamis, West Java, and Hamka's Tafsir al-Azhar. The study revealed distinct interpretations among these groups. Javanese readers understood Islamic Wasathiyah in al-Baqarah 143 as being in the middle of religious practices. For Sundanese readers, it carried the same ‘in the middle’ connotation but with a specific focus on social life, denoting neither stinginess nor extravagance. In the Malay interpretation of Tafsir al-Azhar, it denotes the position of ummatan wasaṭan, signifying a community dedicated to upholding the straight path. The study also identifies two primary indicators of Islamic Wasathiyah, i.e., balance and fairness. According to readers of al-Ibriz, balance is interpreted as wad'u syai fi mahallihi, placing something in its proper place, while readers of Lanyepaneun emphasize being fair to oneself and others. In terms of tolerance, readers of al-Ibriz perceive it as the absence of compulsion when embracing different religions, emphasizing that the choice of truth should not be a matter of dispute. Conversely, readers of Lanyepaneun have their own interpretation of tolerance. All these interpretations are shaped by the socio-cultural contexts of the commentary authors and their readers, providing a rich tapestry of perspectives on Islamic Wasathiyah. In sum, while the Javanese, Sundanese, and Malay interpretations of 'ummatan wasaṭan' share the overarching theme of moderation, each interpretation reflects the unique cultural, historical, and linguistic contexts in which it is situated. These interpretations demonstrate the Quran's adaptability to diverse cultural settings and its ability to convey universal principles through language and context-specific nuances.
