Abstract

There are two methods of interpretation of the al-Qur’an, the classical interpretive method and the modern exegetical method. The classical method of interpretation is text-oriented and ignores context. Meanwhile, the modern method of interpretation relies on the strength of context to find definite meanings that can answer contemporary problems. Each of the two methods of interpretation has fanatical supporters favoring one side and managing the other. Existing studies related to the problem of the method of interpreting the Qur’an revolved around three objects, namely the support orientation of one of the methods of interpretation and a comparison between the two methods. The author’s study is to find a middle way whose ending solves the conflict between the two methods. This study finds common ground between the two methods of interpretation which its proponents contend with. The meeting point referred to is to take the middle path position in the various terms of the approach to the interpretation of the verses of the Qur’an, namely the middle path between textual and contextualist, between qath’i and dhanny, between ushul and furu’.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the dynamics of Sufism and environmental studies in Indonesian Islamic higher education institutions through scientific works in the form of a thesis, thesis, and dissertation. The selection of scientific works related to Sufism and the environment is made randomly. This research is classified as library research because it relies on collecting and analyzing data through literature studies. The data obtained were processed using discourse analysis and document analysis or content analysis. The data collected through inventory and documentation will be described in more detail by investigating the sources and literature on Sufism and environment relation. The finding of this study is even though scientific studies on Sufism and the environment is abundant, it has not yet had a significant influence on the development of teaching materials and nor directly proportional to the syllabus of Sufism courses.

Abstract

This study aims to look at how Islam—besides the Orthodox—can accept Greek traditions that are not derived from Islamic sources. Since the Prophet Muhammad's time, Muslims tend to reject sources that come from Jews and Christians who are considered to have reduced the facts. Noteworthy, Civilization's progress in the Islamic world is inseparable from Greek traditions such as philosophy, medicine, and others that originated from Hellenism. The entry of this tradition gave enthusiasm to Muslim scholars to translate Greek works into Arabic. The Greek tradition, especially philosophy, gave distinguished names such as Ibn Sina and al-Farabi. However, after entering the early 15th Century, the study of philosophy stagnated until the 19th century. The Islamic world's scientific condition is far below the progress of the Western nations, both in technology, economics, and education. Modern Century Muslim thinkers realized that they had fallen behind the West and had to pursue it by reforming Islam. Islamic reformers emerged from various Islamic worlds such as Egypt, India, Turkey, and Southeast Asia countries.

Abstract

This study examines the Reciting of the Qur'an with the Javanese style. The object of study is in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. This discourse was viral and controversial after Yaser Arafat Reciting Qur'an with Javanese style at the Istana Negara when Isra Mi'raj last May 2015. Some discourses that revolve show the counter-productivity by considering the Javanese style of reciting the Qur'an only as a form of resistance to the majority of the reading Qur'an without regard to the character of the Javanese style of reciting Qur'an itself. Javanese people, including Yogyakarta, have strong cultural roots related to how to recite poems and songs. This study will explain some factors underlying the Reciting of the Qur'an with Javanese style in Yogyakarta can survive on the side-lines of the growth of Reciting Qur'an with Arabic style, which is increasing in demand by everyone. This study uses the anthropological-social approach and Bernard T. Adeney Ristakotta in three networks of meaning; modernity, religion, and ancestral culture. The author found several factors underlying Reciting Qur'an with Javanese style still exist in Yogyakarta. They are cultural, contestation, and ideological factors. All three are factors that influence each other. In this case, the contestation factor became the dominant factor among them.

Abstract

Hadith studies, especially the discourse of the dating of hadith, become Western Scholarship's concern. Some of them include the Revisionist or the Skeptic group such as Ignaz Goldziher, Joseph Schacht, Juynboll, Michael Cook, Patricia Crone, Norman Calder, and others. Their paradigm, idea, and theory dominate around the hadith studies. This domination spread not only in Europe but also in other areas. Then Harald Motzki, as one of the Sanguine group members, challenges their idea and paradigm with his theory, the Isnad Cum Matn method. This method is combined both The Revisionist method and The Sanguine method. It is essential to investigate the nature of the Isnad Cum Matn method and the genesis of this discourse. The questions now present itself; what is the epistemological structure of Motzki's study on hadith? What is the archaeological dimension of the Isnad Cum Matn method? This research uses epistemology, genealogy, and the archaeology of knowledge as the analytical theory. The type of this research is library research. The source of the primary data of this research is from two of Motzki's main book. There are The Origins of Islamic Jurisprudence Meccan Fiqh before The Classical School and Analyzing Muslim Tradition. The data analysis is described by descriptive method, taxonomy method, interpretative method, and the comparative method. Based on this research, we can conclude several points. The first is that the Isnad Cum Matn's epistemological structure relies on the source, the methodology, and validity. The Isnad Cum Matn method's source comes from the classical hadith collection, the transmitter's biography, and the Western scholars' theories. The methodology of the isnad cum matn shows the combination between the Revisionist and the Sanguine theories. The Isnad Cum Matn method's validity depends on the historical data of the transmitter, the structural correspondences of the bundle of isnad, and the connections of Mutun. The second is that the Isnad Cum Matn method is not built from a "space," but this method's nature came from many aspects offered by many scholars. The discourse formation of the dating hadith issue shows that his theory connected to many scholars' theories before him. The discourse appears by the relation among scholars (geo-academical scholars) and the political factor. The discourse of the Isnad Cum Matn is constructed by the hegemony of the Sanguine paradigm. The characteristic of this paradigm is anti-Eurocentrism, self-reflective, and self-critics. The Sanguine paradigm is controlled by the Sanguine scholars who relate with Deutsche Morgenlandischen Gessellschacft and the Albert Hourani Award.

Abstract

Jihad is a term that represents the ambivalence of religion. It will continuously become a media of debate for some groups including Muslim and non-Muslim. According to JAI, jihad is striving in studying the teachings of Islam, then trying to practice them in daily life, and preaching in the way of Allah SWT. According to Ghulam Ahmad, there are three concepts of jihad, namely, small jihad, big jihad, and greatest jihad. Small jihad is now over because present condition is different from the past, they are no longer contextual.

Abstract

In quantity, Indonesia has the biggest Muslim in the word. However, the history is a proof that political identity labeled Islam has never succeeded in Indonesian presidential election. This is inseparable from the friction among Muslims who are divided when they come into contact with the territory. Besides, the purity of Islam, especially in the eyes of the laity, seems tarnished if Islam is associated with political attachments. This term is deliberately raised by certain stakeholders to win the public domain since Indonesia is democracy system. The presence of the Islamic defense action 212 was able to catch an eye of the public at large when the divided Muslims have one common enemy (blasphemy of the al-Qur'an). This phenomenon gives a large political power as a rival for the incumbent. This is qualitative research with literature study method and analysis of the phenomenology of Islamic defense action 212. The reference taken is closely related to the information media that describes the public discourse about Ahok's defamation of the Quran to various sustainable Islamic defense action movements. The results of the research show that the 212 movement is neither a political movement nor Islamic mass organization but is a calling of the Muslim community in Indonesia who feels that their religion has been tarnished in the context of defamation of the holy verse of the Qur'an. Furthermore, Islamic defense action 212 establishes not only a political map in Indonesia but also other dimensions in the form of a Muslim-based business spirit such as the Muslim entrepreneurial center (212 mart). Koperasi Syariah 212 was supported by community figures, and the forerunner of the establishment of Islamic banking system in Indonesia.

Abstract

Axiology is a discourse related to the value or usefulness of science. Science that is developed and controlled by humans should principally be able to provide positive values for human development and keep science and technology away from dehumanization. Axiology must be a guide in developing science because science and technology can develop with the support of human ambition which can be directed by negative and positive factors. Therefore, morality becomes a very important factor when a scientist develops his knowledge. The scientific way of thinking has achieved extraordinary developments in the current era of information technology 4.0., which is well-known as the internet of things. Not all societies are ready for this fundamental change, which not only leads to changes in thought, but also in relation to the culture of the community. Everything is based on technology. The industrial revolution 4.0 reflects a combination of digital and biological physical technology that is able to change humans in the fields of artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, big data and cloud computing, which all of which change the political, social and economic system. Many taboo matters such as extending age, designing babies, intelligent robots with feelings and development of information media technology lead to the negative side. For this reason, the problem of axiology is very important to be implemented, especially in the midst of the onslaught of technology that tends to be value-free in the current era.

Abstract

Abstract This article is aimed to build bridge between Islamic Science and Modern Western Social Science and offer a wasathiyyah (moderate/median) oriented Social Science building from epistemological point of view. Through philosophical approach, this article suggests that in order to develop integrative social science, philosophers and Muslim scholars must incrementally and systematically formulate comprehensive integrative theory building which includes metatheoretical understanding imperative as the foundation or grand theme of the systematization of social theories. This study identifies that the gap in current modern social science is caused by the micro extremism approach and methodological individualism. Here is the importance and relevance of wasathiyyah (moderate/median) as principle of balance (tawazun) between individual and societal claim in the social life of Muslims. Through this proposal, prophetic paradigm putting forward balance/moderation (wasathiyyah) in developing the framework of integrative Islamic Social Science finds clearer orientation and direction. The next step is to derivate them into social theories and their practical forms.

Abstract

The development of information technology has brought about many changes in human life, especially in terms of communication. The emergence of social media that provides a lot of convenience in communicating, sharing various activities and of course being a place to share selfies, unknowingly fosters narcissism, which is no exception for teenagers. The desire to be famous, beautiful, get praise from others, seem to be natural things that must be followed. It is no doubt that this narcissistic can have negative impacts on a person's behavior and morals. Taking photos in inappropriate clothes, or speaking in inappropriate language, seems to be justified on social media. Not to mention that the narcissistic photo implies a person's arrogance, because it is presented as perfectly as possible so that other people are interested and become viral, regardless of its consequences for moral values.
