Abstract

This research focuses on the socio-cultural transformation of Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama’ (NU) communities in the prismatic communities of East Java (i.e., Jember, Bondowoso, and Lumajang). This condition cannot be separated from transforming various sectors in people’s lives that make it a prismatic (transitional) society. Therefore, this research seeks to find and understand the basic framework for the socio-cultural transformation of Muhammadiyah and NU communities in society. From the unit of analysis, this study uses a qualitative approach with ethnographic research, while the data collection techniques use in-depth interviews, participatory observations, field notes, and documentation. This research uses interactive data analysis by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. This research finds that Muhammadiyah and NU communities have relatively different characteristics. In these three districts, members of Muhammadiyah and NU tend to be stagnant and unaffected by their various oppositional organizational doctrines. However, their socio-cultural transformation occurs triggered by external and internal factors dialectically related to themselves. The implication is that the modernist corporate identity attached to Muhammadiyah and the traditional community identity to NU is relatively irrelevant, especially when there is a progressive and alternating socio-cultural transformation between the two communities.

Abstract

This article intends to examine the phenomenon of polygamy mentoring in Indonesia, which is campaigned by Kiai Hafidin on the Robbanian Family Youtube account. This study focuses on how the interpretation of polygamy according to Kiai Hafidin, its correlation with polygamy that developed in Indonesia, and the religious problems in this country. The approach used is a virtual ethnographic approach (netnography) by applying two analytical models, discourse analysis and hermeneutical analysis. This research shows that the polygamy discourse delivered by Kiai Hafidin is allegedly based on the theological reasoning of QS. al-Nisa’ (4): 3 and 129, and the practice of polygamy by the Prophet Muhammad and his companions, but tends to be apologetic. Moreover, Kiai Hafidin’s polygamy discourse is positioned as resistance to the existing discourse in Indonesia, namely monogamy discourse. For Kiai Hafidin, polygamy is related to marriage and as an alternative to various socio-religious problems; for example, as a solution to the rise of adultery cases, many women are still single, and the depletion of religiously good women. However, apart from this, Kiai Hafidin’s polygamy discourse basically strengthens the interests of patriarchy, which further distances the ideal bond between men and women.

Abstract

The most effective metal manufacturing process is double pressing, which is capable of bending metal. The bending of the metal will cause a reaction that can improve its mechanical properties. In the book Al-Jamahir fi ma`rifat al-Jawahir there are three patterns that explain the process methodology, they are; لملك Al mil'k: Tension, الفقلو Al Fiqlu: bending, اإلنفيل Al infial: Reaction. This is in line with the development of the equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP)’s method: if the metal is bent, a reaction will occur which can improve its mechanical properties. In Kitab Al-Hiyal there is a hypothesis of the existence of an attraction in the movement of celestial bodies which is able to provide an explanation of the movement of large forces. Then, another discussion is about the motion of stars and the law of attraction, where there is a force of attraction between celestial bodies. According to the book of Al Hiyal, the greatest force is the earthquake movement which causes a circular rotary force effect, this also underlies the high pressure torsion (HPT) method by PW Bridman who discovered the HPT method with a narrative that HPT is initiated by earthquake movements and in his scientific article explains that the earthquake movement as a torsional motion. In another experimental reference, accumulative roll bonding (ARB) technology is the basis of the material development method which is carried out by stacking plates that are loaded with roll compression loads. Based on the double-edged sword experiment, the zulfikar sword, which is explored by Khabab bin Art as a practitioner and Salman Al Farishi as a drafter, this method has similar procedures for stacking and finalizing the base plate. The development of the Zulfikar sword continued with Al Qashhandi who developed the Damascus sword used by Salahuddin Al Ayubi, from the perspective of the metal plate bending stress originating from the roll compression stress, where there is a deflection of the tip of the plate on the blade. The results of the characterization of the ECAP, HPT and ARB methods show that HPT has superior mechanical properties characterization results compared to other methods, but HPT has limited dimensions which can only be applied to components that have a size of less than 5 cm, with a powder base material. Meanwhile, ECAP and ARB dominate in many applications because they can be applied to large dimensions, as well as the availability of materials and the flexibility of raw materials into application products.

Abstract

Changing munkar (doing evil) is one of the crucial and important themes to be discussed, especially when it comes to the religion, it will be even more sensitive. The majority of the Muslim community understands that changing munkar by hand is an obligation for the ruler and every individual should not do it as long as there is a ruler. According to Jamal al-Banna, those understanding is to simplify the hadith. This study aims to examine the thoughts of Jamal al-Banna regarding his understanding of change munkar’s hadith. Then how does understanding the hadith change of munkar from Jamal al-Banna's perspective? How is it relevant to the modern era? Those are the research question that will be answered in this study. This research is a literature study with a literature review approach. The results of this study show that there are several points in the results of Jamal al-Banna's understanding of amar makruf nahi munkar. First, amar makruf nahi munkar is a means legalized by Islam to determine individual participation in the affairs of their society. Second, several verses and hadiths assume that the form of evil that must be changed and even mandatory is the injustice of the ruler. Third, Islam views that amar ma’ruf nahi munkar from one side is the right of every citizen, but from the other side it is an obligation for one. Fourth, Islam views that the means given legality for amar ma’ruf nahi munkar are verbal (with good wisdom and advice). However, Islam does not prohibit individuals from exercising their rights, by using their 'hands' when in an emergency and forced situation.

Abstract

The dynamics of Islam within the framework of Islamic majority and minority groups cannot be separated from the government’s role in maintaining religious tolerance. Minority groups such as Moro Muslims in the Philippines, Patani Muslims in Thailand, and Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar have illustrated the government’s minimal role in resolving conflicts between the majority and minorities. Therefore, this paper discusses the Muslim majority and minority groups in several countries and their relationship with the government to implement the practice of religious tolerance. This article uses a library method with a content analysis approach from relevant articles related to the government’s role in implementing religious tolerance practices in Southeast Asia. The study shows that the existence of Islam as a belief of a person and the people who are part of the state and government cannot be separated from one another. In other words, the state’s support for its people of various ethnicity, cultures, and religions will contribute to the peace of the state and the creation of state stability. The position of the majority and minority in the religious process will also influence religious institutions socially, economically, and culturally. Showing the expression of diversity in religious practices in the Southeast Asia region will create a new order in creating peace.

Abstract

A review of the epistemology of the audiovisual interpretation of the “Kajian Tafsir Al-Ma’rifah” YouTube channel delivered by Musthafa Umar is important to find out the source of interpretation, the method of interpretation, and the benchmark for the validity of his interpretation. Considering that a work of interpretation cannot be separated from various tendencies of commentators, whether it is caused by socio-cultural conditions in their environment, political influences, science, the context in which the interpretation was born, and others. Thus, studying the epistemology of interpretation becomes an urgent scientific problem to be addressed to know an interpretation. This paper is to significantly reveal the epistemology of Musthafa Umar’s thoughts in the process of interpretation on YouTube. Based on a study of the epistemology of audiovisual interpretation delivered on the “Kajian Tafsir Al-Ma’rifah” YouTube channel, it was found that Musthafa’s interpretation belongs to the category of bil ma’tsur and bil ra’yi interpretations. When interpreting Al Qur’an, he combines the tahlili (analytical) method and the maudhu’i (thematic) method. His interpretation is correct because it follows the coherence, correspondence, and pragmatic theory of truth.

Abstract

The Arab Republic of Egypt has become of the most influential countries in the Middle East Region and Africa. Unsurprisingly, external parties were interested to interfere in this country. As the Cold War raged, a series of conflicts arose, creating the dynamics in the Middles East countries. The conflicts that arose had an enormous effect on the economy of the countries. Many earlier studies have discussed the conflict and its impact and the rivalry of the two blocs of power fighting for influence in Egypt. However, what remains unexplored and draws only little attention among the researchers is how these forces affect the countries like Egypt to become 'competitive arenas'. This study analyzes and explains the influence of the United States in Egypt, specifically in terms of increasing economic liberalization after the Camp David agreement. The results indicated that Camp David accelerated the economic liberalization that Egypt had started in 1974. The increase in economic liberalization in Egypt was mainly driven by the foreign aid provided by the United States as its transnational tool. The strongest evidence of increasing economic liberalization in Egypt is the open-door policy for foreign investment and product exports to Egypt. The Egyptian government had no longer absolute power in regulating the market. Meanwhile, the impact of increasing economic liberalization on society is seen in the consumption and demand for American products. American fast-food companies such as KFC and McDonald's were welcomed among the Egyptian people.

Abstract

The Minangkabau people are one of the dynamic groups of traders in Indonesia. This study follows a Field Study approach, and it aims to reveal the influence of inheritance when it is used as business capital. The study starts by discussing theoretical debates about inheritance in Islam. Then, it is followed by new construction of inheritance within the Minangkabau tribe. The findings of this study indicate that the management of inheritance into business capital in Minangkabau is a new idea that was never carried out in the past. Furthermore, the productive pattern of inheritance is positively correlated with the economic welfare of a family. Finally, the development of businesses built from inheritance can automatically encourage new Muslim entrepreneurs to compete with other entrepreneurs in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study is aimed to depict Emha Ainun Nadjib's reception of the Qur’an in a religious forum, Maiyah. This research is important to be discussed because Maiyah is an effective forum for transforming religious knowledge, especially the study of the Qur'an to his followers. The researcher uses qualitative research using an anthropological approach. Then, sources of the data were obtained from observations at the Maiyah Islamic forum which was held once a month. The researcher was directly involved in the Maiyah forum to observe Cak Nun and his followers' reception of the Qur'an. Ahmad Rafiq's theory which divides the reception of the Qur'an into three: exegetical reception, aesthetic reception, and functional reception is used to frame the direction of this research. The results of this study are as follows. First, exegetically, Cak Nun and followers of The Maiyah Community perceive the Qur'an as a strategic method of understanding the Qur'an which is comprehended and fit to the general people. Second, aesthetically, the Qur'an in Maiyah is displayed in recitations of the Qur'an and written works of mushaf tadabur which are expressions of Islamic art. Third, functional reception is seen through spiritual and intellectual transformation for followers.
