Abstract

This research intends to investigate the translation procedures of political terms of a book entitled A Magic Gecko: CIA’S Role behind the Fall of Soekarno written by Geerken (2009) and translated by Adiati (2011). The data was collected by observation and note-taking techniques. Political terms in the forms of words, phrases,and expression are the data in this article which was then analyzed through qualitative research method. The grand theory proposed by Newmark (1988) was applied to analyze procedures of translation of the book. The findings show that there were eight out of eighteen translation procedures applied in translating political terms in the book Magic Gecko. The translation procedures were literal translation, transference, naturalization, descriptive equivalent, through-translation, shift, reduction and expansion, and couplet

Abstract

Drink advertising is one of media that utilizes the biggest grammatical in promotional activities. The varian of discourse uses a choice of certain lingual units are composed of structure to achieve advertising purpose. This study aims to determine the cohesion parts, structure, and the aims of the beverage advertising through the discourse analysis approach. Data ware taken by observing the units beverage advertisement on internet. The qualitative approach is used to tell data descriptively and analyzed by agitation and matching methods. The results show (1) grammatical cohesion, namely: ellipsis, conjunctions, and noun repetition in lexical cohesion, (2) discourse structure is not equipped with a cover Minute Maid, Lemon Lime Sprite, and Coca-Cola. The dominant opening section aims to attract consumers' interest through the questions are given, and use propositions to attract special attention by writting customers’ name on Coca-Cola taq. The objective approach widely used in body of Lemon Lime Sprites, Yoo-Hoo Chocolate Drink, and Muscle Milk. Then, the advertising discourse has a closing part namely Yoo-Hoo Chocolate Drink uses hard technique, and Muscle Milk has subtle technique.

Abstract

This study describes the semantic structure of BM's mental predicate in the verb subcategory as the subject of experience and the verb as object of experience. As for the background of this writing, remember that the mental predicate or psychological verb includes a verb that has a very complicated semantic component mapping and requires the right strategy to avoid mistakes in limiting the meaning of the lexical items being analyzed. This study used descriptive qualitative method. Research data in the form of mental verbs sourced from Mandailing Language (BM). Then the data are analyzed using prefreshation techniques to identify lexical items that intuitively include mental predicate. The results showed that the mean of cognition verbs ‘malamun’ and ‘mangangankon’ was formed from THINKING the polishemic TELLING and THINKING the polishemic HAPPENING, the meaning of knowledge verb ‘mamboto’ and ‘ingot’ was formed from KNOWING the polishemic TELLING, the meaning emotion verb ‘mabiar’ an ‘manyolop’ was formed from FEELING polishemic THINKING, the meaning of perception verb ‘manyirik’ and ‘manatap’ was formed from SEEING the polishemis FEELING, SEEING the polishemic TELLING

Abstract

Reading literacy in Indonesia has been very low, and factors contributing to low literacy have not been resolved. This study aims to analyze the relationship of sentence structure knowledge in reading literacy skill (1), the contribution of sentence structure knowledge in reading literacy skill (2). This study employed mixed method design of quantitative and qualitative method. Quantitative design was used to address reaseach purpose 1 and 2 particularly using correlations and regression analyses to explain the relationship. Participants of this study were53 students of the Merdeka University of Malang. Data were collected from Indonesian Language Proficiency Test (Ujian Kemahiran Berbahasa Indonesia/UKBI) and a reading interest questionnaire completed byparticipants. This study revealed that there was a significant positive relationship between sentence structure knowledge and reading skills, r=.294, p = .034. The contribution of sentence structure knowledge accounted for 8,6% of reading literacy variance. This study provides support for Indonesian teachers and tutor to develop students’ Indonesia sentence structure knowledge and to arouse their reading interests.

Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim of knowing the operational verbs used in language learning in 2nd grade at Bali Kiddy Primary School, knowing and describing verb learning strategies in language learning in 2nd grade at Bali Kiddy Primary School and knowing the relationship of using the operational verbs with Bloom’s Taxonomy in language learning in 2nd grade at Bali Kiddy Primary School. This research is a qualitative research using observation and interview methods in data collection. Research findings and analysis results show that there are 51 operational verbs used in language learning in grade 2 at Bali Kiddy Primary School which are categorized into two categories of verb according to Shopen Theory; 46 verbs classified as action verb and 5 verbs classified as process verb, as well as the verb learning strategies which are used in language learning in 2nd grade at Bali Kiddy Primary School varies greatly. In addition, this study also found the relationship between the used of operational verbs in language learning in 2nd grade at Bali Kiddy Primary School with Bloom’s Taxonomy. Overall, it was found that operational verbs in language learning was classified three cognitive categories namely C1 (remember) with examples of operational verbs menulis and membaca, C2 (understand) with examples of operational verbs memahami and menginterpretasi and also C3 (apply) with the example of operational verbs menggunakan and menyelesaikan.

Abstract

Chinese words’ usage errors in compositions of undergraduates are very attractive to be research, because the errors are truly has become the obstruction of communication in composition. The purpose of this study is to describe the cause factors of the Chinese words’ usage errors in compositions of undergraduates. Use the approach of International qualitative methodology and the data of this research is got from the students in Unesa and UWK. The data analysis contains the following procedures. First, identify the word usage errors and classify the types based on the linguistics taxonomy which consisting of phonology, semantics & lexical, morphological, and syntactic. Finally, it analyzes the cause factors from both the perspective of linguistics and non-linguistics. The study finding interference between Chinese and Indonesian is the main linguistics factor causing. At the same time, the strategy of communication and language environment of undergraduates are the non-linguistic factors causing. Moreover, if viewed from the students themselves, learning duration, exposure, language governance, and media of study are also affects the words’ usage in composition.

Abstract

This research focuses in analyzing morphological processes and the semantic structure of deadjectival verb suffixation –m(u) in Japanese. Suffix -m(u) is one of the verb-forming suffixes in Japanese. The data was collected from newspaper article from website asahi.com and corpus data from website http://corpora.uni-leipzig.de. The data was collected by observation method and note-taking techniques. The data was analyzed using distribution method. The theory for analyzing the morphological processes is based on semantic class adjective developed by Morita (2010) and affixation theory developed by Sugioka and Ito (2002). Then, the theory for analyzing semantic structure deadjectival verb is Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) theory developed by Goddard and Wierzbicka (2014). The results shows that not all adjectives in Japanese can be affected by the suffix –m(u). Deadjectival verb suffixation –m(u) in Japanese are formed by semantics prime FEEL. The semantic prime of FEEL can be polysemy with semantic prime THINK and HAPPEN.

Abstract

Literature confirms that various errors made by Indonesian learners of English as a foreign language are challenging phenomenon which needs our concern. The errors found are both in speech and composition production, which portray the effectiveness of language learning. Students language that belongs neither native nor target language is called interlanguage (IL). The focus of this study is to present the empirical results of the investigation on the IL features of students' speech production. It aims to describe the types and aspects of the native language (NL) and target language (TL) influences and to explain the possible causes of IL production. The data were in the form of 144 ill-formed utterances. In gathering the data, the students were given a guided picture with the topic ‘Last Holiday’. The students' speech was video recorded. The ill-formed utterances were collected, identified, described, and explained. The result of the study shows that both of their NL and TL influenced the students' interlanguage production at the syntactical level.

Abstract

Translating technical terminologies that belong to special field is challenging, especially to those who are not mastering the field. In translating the immigration terminologies found in the regulations concerning immigration, the translators applied various translation procedures in order to maintain the meaning. The aim of this research is to identify the translation procedures applied in translating the immigration terminologies found in the data source. The data were collected from Undang-Undang Nomor 6 Tahun 2011 tentang Keimigrasian, Peraturan Presiden Republik Indonesia Nomor 104 Tahun 2015 tentang Perubahan Atas Peraturan Presiden Nomor 69 Tahun 2015 tentang Bebas Visa Kunjungan, along with their translations. Qualitative research approach is applied in this writing. The theory used to analyze the data is the theory of translation proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet. The result of the research showed that in translating the immigration terminologies found in the data source, the translator applied 5 (five) out of 7 (seven) translation procedures. These 5 (five) procedures are borrowing, calque, literal, transposition, and modulation. The other 2 (two) translation procedures that were not applied are equivalence and adaptation.

Abstract

This article aims to find out the types and functions of speech acts of mother and child contained in the family movie with the title Susah Sinyal. This study uses a qualitative approach. The method of data collection used is the method of listening with a free and involved way of reading and note taking techniques. The data source in this study is in the form of speech by mother and child in the family movie with the title Susah Sinyal. The results showed that mother and child speech acts in the family movie with the title Susah Sinyal can be classified based on the type and function of speech acts. In terms of the types of speech acts that are found include: locutionary act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act. Meanwhile, in terms of speech act functions found include: assertive, directive, expressive, commissive and declarative.
