Abstract

In 2007, Semarang State University (SSU) founded its Department of Early Childhood Teacher Education. The Department is also the first provider of degree level of preschool teacher education in the Province of Central Java Indonesia. Despite its young age, the Department has soon becomea reference institution at the provincial level. The Department, however, has been struggling for its curriculum improvement. This is partly also due to the fact that until 2007 there was only one degree-level preschool teacher education provider, for which curriculum evaluation seemed not anecessity. For the purpose of its curriculum improvement, the Department conducted a tracer study of its first alumni. It aimed to identify their personal and social acceptance and their role at the institutions they work for. The Department expected, based on the data on these matters, todevelop its curriculum, academic program, and institutional management improvement plans. 46 alumni teachers and 35 principals in whose centers the alumni work were involved. This study found that the alumni seemed to have no problem with their personal and social acceptance. Of those studied, 97.45% said to be confident with their ability in lesson planning and with their mastery of lesson contents. Most alumni also said that they have benefited from all courses, both the theoretical and the practical, they did during their university study, meaning that the Department curriculum is professionally relevant. Unfortunately, this was accompanied by a trend that no alumni offer alternative practice. In fact alternative practice is the very content the Department’s course on Curriculum Development they learnt. This could be because they are limited by the government regulation or by their centers they work for. Yet, somehow, from an academic point of view this is a daunting situation.

Abstract

Based on the research results in the first and tsecond year on curriculum content evaluation in kindergarten that included the suitability of the curriculum being used with the children development stages, the curriculum orientation centered on the child, the suitability of the curriculum to the needs of children, the internalization of cultural values of Indonesian society into curriculum use, the ability to adapt curriculum development and information technology, and the simplicity of the curriculum to be implemented in learning. Still many kindergartens are not able to develop their own curriculum and even when some of them did develop a curriculum, it did not refer to the curriculum development scope of principles. Therefore, in the third year researchers have carried out as follows; developed the concept of curriculum drafting training for kindergarten in Jakarta; Validation of the theoretical concept of training on the preparationof kindergarten curriculum by early childhood specialists and curriculum; Revised concept based on the results of theoretical validation; Developing instruments to measure the effectiveness of the kindergarten curriculum training; Trial instrument measuring the effectiveness of kindergarten curriculum training preparation. The evaluation was conducted by assessing the kindergarten curriculum that has been developed by the kindergarten with a qualitative model. The curriculum assessment was carried out by curriculum specialists in Early Childhood Education (ECD).

Abstract

Hurlock (2006) argues that parents in general teach traditional gender role as a role for man and another role for woman. School and society teach that there is another role that can be done by both gender called the gender role. Gender roles can be developed with the same level of learning and the use of literature in schools. The purpose of this study is to describe the ef fectiveness of picture stories to teach the role of gender to the students in kindergarten. Paired t tests between pretest and posttest experimental group generate significant value (2-tailed) <0.05 is 0.000, which means there are significant differences between the control group and the experimental. Paired t-test calculation results betweenthe pretest and posttest control group generating value Significant (2-tailed)> 0.05 is 0.058, which means there is no significant difference. Paired t test results posttest experimental and control groups was no significant dif ference because they have Significant (2-tailed) <0.05 is 0.01, which means there are significant dif ferences. The result showed there are differences in understanding the role of gender in the experiment group before and after they are given the picture stories, and the differences in understanding also found in the experiment control group after treatment. From these fact, we can conclude hat picture stories are ef fective to be used to teach the gender role to children in kindergarten. This research has been conducted in accordance with theprocedures of the study, but there are still limitations in the implementation. Time constraints in the implementation of the study, with a longer time then the picture story will have more inf luence on the understanding of the role of child gender. Respondents were slightly. The study design is simple so just measure the effectiveness of a picture story but less identify the extent to which the understanding of gender roles

Abstract

Research on emergent literacy states that young children learn about reading through experiences with oral language. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of implementing dialogic reading techniques in a pos paud setting via caregiver training program by kader pos paud to improve emergent literacy development. In the first experiment, the sample consisted of 19 respondents in the control group and 17  in the experiment group. The result of the study indicated an improvement in emergent literacy knowledge and dialogic reading skill for kader pos paud that following the training program. The independent t-test result indicated that post-treatment score for the experiment group was significantly better than the control group. The paired t-test results showed significant gain between pre and post treatment for experiment group. The score was entered to SPSS version 17. In the second experiment, there are  8 children in the control group and 9 children in the experiment group. The emergent literacy test that made by the researcher  was used to determine the emergent literacy development of the subjects. The Mann Whitney test statistical method indicated significant gain between the experimental group and the control group. A Wilcoxon test revealed a significant gain in emergent literacy development for the experimental group. Therefore, this study found that a  caregiver  on  storybook  reading  may  lead  to  a  possible  positive  influenced    in  emergent  literacy development for the pre-kindergarten children whose caregivers attended the training program. How to citeAstuti, T., & Ekowarni, E.
