Abstract

Infertility in cat becomes a serious problem in pet community since many compounds of infertility-caused can be found widely in the environment. One of the compounds causing infertility in mammals is Bisphenol-A (BPA), which is known as an estrogenic compound. The purpose of this research is to observe the changes in testicular histology of male domestic cat (Felis domestica) induced by BPA orally. Sample used in this study were 24 male domestic cats divided into 4 groups, namely the group 1 as control, group 2, 3 and 4 were treated with BPA about 5, 10 and 100 mg/kg bodyweight, respectively for 5 days. The results showed that the estrogenic effect of BPA affects the reproductive system of the cat. The effects of BPA in cat included decrease in the amounts of spermatozoa, vacuolization of seminiferous tubules cells, degeneration of Leydig cells, degeneration of tubular epithelial cells,  irregular forms of the germ, interstitial tissue hemorrhage, debris cell filled the lumen of seminiferous tubules. These results suggested that BPA can be harmful to the reproductive system of the cat

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to test the resistance and to detect antibiotic resistence encoding gene in E. coli bacteria from chickens in Bandung and Purwakarta livestock. 18 E. coli isolates were tested for antibiotics resistance using the disk diffusion method. Isolates that were categorized as resistant and intermediate to antibiotics, then polymerase chain reaction was utilized to detect the resistent coding gene. The test results showed that all E. coli isolates from chickens in Bandung and Purwakarta were resistant to ampicillin (100%). E. coli isolates were still sensitive to chloramphenicol (11.1%) and gentamicin (22.2%). The gene encoding for ampC resistance from the test were in the amount of 77.7%. Sensitivity test results and detection of resistance coding gene showed that almost all isolates were resistant to ampicillin antibiotics and E. coli isolates were still sensitive to chlorampenicol and gentamicin.

Abstract

Contraception is a way to prevent the fusion of mature egg cell and sperm during the intercourse, so the fertilization will not occur. Some contraceptive methods in small animals have been evolved. This research aimed to determine the effects of kapok seed (Ceiba pentandra Gaertn) extract as contraception agent to the quality of spermatozoain domestic cats. The animals were divided into four group with each group consisted of six male cats. Group I, II, III was designated as the treatment groups and IV as the control group. The cats were given the emulsion of kapok seeds extract orally with concentration of 0,1%  b/v, 0,71 mg/kg BB, 0,36 mg/kg BB and 0,21 mg/kg BB doses. This study used Randomized Complete Random Design (RAL) design from sperm quality data and used ANOVA statistic test. The result showed that the concentration of sperm decreased in the treatment groups compared with the control group. Statistically, the sperm concentration decreased significantly (P < 0,05) between the control group and treatment groups. The average motility in low and medium doses was above 40% while it was below than 40% in the high doses group. Based on the results, the granting of kapok seed extract inhibited the viability of spermatozoa of cats with significant results (P < 0,05). Sperm abnormalities in this study was obtained from the control group with percentage average of 1 % , while it was significantly increased in the treatment groups marked by abnormalities in the shape of the head and tail of the spermatozoa. These results suggested that kapok seed extract can be used as one of the contraceptive agents in domestic cat (Felis domestica) because it can decrease the sperm quality significantly.

Abstract

Trachypithecus auratus is one of the vulnerable primate species that is declining in number due to illegal hunting and forest degradation. The efforts to increase population can be through ex-situ conservation program that are specific to reproduction. To date, little is known about the reproduction of this species, particularly in the aspect of sexual behavior. The aim of this research was to analyze the sexual behavior of T. auratus at the Taman Safari Indonesia ex-situ conservation facility. This research conducted on five adult individuals from a group of consisting of one male and four females. The group of T. auratus were observed for five months from September 2018 until January 2019. The method used focal animal sampling with BORIS (Behavioral Observation Research Interactive Software). The results showed that the females performed pre-copulation (courtship) behavior such as head shaking (28.90%), hindquarter present (17.33%), raising a forelimb (11.66%), and the male performed pre-copulation (courtship) behavior such as genital inspection (68.46%). Copulation lasts for 60 seconds, starting with male mounting and thrusting as many as 40 seconds and ejaculation which is thought to occur for 20 seconds. At the end of the copulation sequence, a pair of T. auratus showed grooming and foraging together. The conclusion of this research was T. auratus has parameters of sexual behavior with copulation that lasts for 60 seconds and head shaking was sexual behavior that can be used as an signal for mating. This research are expected to be used as basic reproductive biology data to support the breeding and conservation program of T. auratus species.

Abstract

Poor hygiene of traditional market often resulted in bacterial contamination of chicken meat including Proteus mirabilis which is also serve as a foodborne disease in human. Proteus mirabilis is pathogenic to humans because it can produces the urease which results in urinary tract infections (UTI). This research aimed to determine the presence of Proteus mirabilis bacteria in chicken meat sold in some traditional markets in the city of Makassar. The samples used in this study (24 samples) were obtained from 6 Traditional Markets in Makassar. Colony observation, Gram staining and biochemical test were used to identify Proteus mirabilis in the chicken carcass. Positive samples were confirmed by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The result of this study revealed that 12.5% (3/24) were positively contaminated with Proteus mirabilis. The conclusion of this study was that chicken meat sold in the traditional market of Makassar has already been contaminated with Proteus mirabilis

Abstract

Broiler chickens or broilers are the cheapest source of animal protein that can be obtained apart from eggs. The high demand for broiler chicken meat is fulfilled because modern broilers grow rapidly and are maintained massively and intensively. Massive maintenance systems make the spread of disease easier. Treatment of bacterial diseases using inappropriate antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance. This study aims to look at the antibiotic resistance of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria from broiler chickens. E coli bacteria were isolated from 34 samples of broiler chicken cecum taken from several large traders in the city of Makassar. The E. coli isolates were then tested using Kirby-Bauer's diffuse disc method on 5 types of antibiotics from 5 classes of antibiotics namely: Ampicillin (β-lactam); Tetracycline (Tetracycline); Gentamicin (Aminoglycosides); Enrofloxacin (Flouroquinolone); Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethroprim (Sulfonamide). The inhibition zone formed was interpreted using the CLSI 2018 standard. The results of this study were 79.4% of the samples resistant to Ampisillin, 85.3% resistant to Tetracycline, 61.8% resistant to Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethroprim, 76.5% resistant to Enrofloxacin and 52.9% were resistant to Gentamicin. With 91.18% of the sample being resistant to at least 2 types of antibiotics.

Abstract

Incidence of drug overdose during treatment of acute disease consequently leads to serious renal damage. As supporting treatment, administration of herbal medicine and food dietary are frequently developed. This research aimed to prove how the administration of avocado juice could lower the BUN and creatinine level in white rats induced with toxic doses of meloxicam. Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drug (NSAID), which is effectively used as an anti-inflamatory, analgesic, and antipyretic. Twenty four (24) male Wistar rats were assigned to 4 groups of six rats each (n=6). 1 ml of CMC 1% was administered to Control Group I, 30 mg/kgBB meloxicam and 1 ml of CMC 1% to Control Grup II, 30 mg/kgBB meloxicam and avocado juice 5 g/kgBB/day to Treatment Group I, and 30 mg/kgBB meloxicam and avocado juice 10 g/kgBB/day to Treatment Group II. The study was conducted over 8 days, then the level of Blood Urea Nitrogen and creatinine of the white rats were examined on the 1st and 8th day. The results were analyzed by Anova Two Way With Replication, then followed by T-test (α = 0,05) if there were difference. The Anova Two Way With Replication test showed that the mean of the four groups either the levels of Blood Urea Nitrogen or creatinine was significantly decreased (p<0,05). The decrease of BUN in the treatment group I was 27,17 27,17mg/dl and 17,83mg/dl while the decrease of creatinine level was 0,983mg/dl and 0,713mg/dl. The conclusion of this study was that avocado juice decreases level of Blood Urea Nitrogen and creatinine in white rats which exposed toxic doses of meloxicam.
