Abstract

Data dikumpulkan selama periode Agustus hingga Desember 2018 di Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy (CERE), Universiti Malaysia Perlis. This study analyzes the potential of solar irradiation, temperature, and wind speed as energy sources for a hybrid photovoltaic (PV)/wind powered motor board system in Perlis, Malaysia. Data were collected during the period from August to December 2018 at the Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy (CERE), Universiti Malaysia Perlis. The results show that the average daily solar irradiation was 371.97 W/m² with an average temperature of 28.06°C, indicating good potential for PV generation. However, the average wind speed was only 1.05 m/s, which is classified as very low. Simulation using PSpice for a 12V 3W PV module produced an error of less than 10% compared to the datasheet. The optimal system design utilizes 17 PV modules, 1 wind turbine, a 6.38A charge controller, and 17 12V 1.2Ah batteries to supply a 10W DC motor load operating 24 hours. A prototype system was successfully built with monitoring based on an ATmega8535 microcontroller. Test results showed that the PV output voltage ranged from 13.42-19.61V with a current of 0.05-0.4A at irradiation levels of 107.5-893.6 W/m².

Abstract

Insulators are vital components in electrical power transmission systems, yet they are susceptible to degradation caused by electrical and environmental stresses. This study aims to analyze Partial Discharge (PD) characteristics in glass and porcelain insulators as an early indicator of insulation failure. Experimental testing involved a step-wise increase in AC voltage from 5 kV to 20 kV, alongside simulations of extreme conditions using exposure to a flame to trigger flashover phenomena. Discharge activity was detected using a PMDT PDetector instrument in accordance with the IEC 60270 standard. The results indicate that within the 5–15 kV range, the insulators exhibited stable performance with PD magnitudes below 20 dB. However, at 20 kV, a significant anomaly was observed in the glass insulator, characterized by a magnitude spike reaching 174 dB across the 360° phase, signaling a transition toward total failure. Phase-Resolved Partial Discharge (PRPD) pattern analysis demonstrated that thermal stress drastically lowers the air breakdown voltage threshold near the insulator surface. The study concludes that high-frequency detection methods are highly effective for the non-intrusive monitoring of insulation conditions, thereby helping to prevent catastrophic failures in electric power systems.

Abstract

The saturation phenomenon in current transformers has a crucial impact on the performance of protection relays in electric power systems. Experimental testing was conducted to analyze the characteristics of current transformers, focusing on the relationship between primary input current (I1), secondary output current (I2), and output voltage (V). The results showed a positive correlation between I1 and I2 and V. The V value remained constant at 5.5 Volts even though I1 increased from 600 mA to 800 mA, and the I value returned to 1.3 A at a certain voltage in a separate test. potential saturation of the transformer core or non-linear behavior of the components under test, which could potentially affect the accuracy of current measurement by the protection relay. especially when approaching or entering saturation conditions. Non-linear behavior, as indicated by stable V values at two different points of I1, and a decrease in I at increasing voltage, thorough testing of the current transformer characteristics to ensure the protection relay can operate accurately and timely, especially in the face of fault conditions that might cause transformer saturation.
