Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The Controlled-Source Electromagnetic (CSEM) method is one of the electromagnetic methods utilized in geophysical exploration. This method provides a subsurface image through the resistivity anomalies of materials encountered by electromagnetic waves. The research area is located near a major city, resulting in high electromagnetic noise. Electromagnetic noise can be categorized into two types of the noise namely periodic noise and sporadic noise. Eliminating noise is a crucial objective to enhance data quality, as it can introduce uncertainty into interpretations. Three noise removal techniques are employed: pre-stack to filter the harmonic noise, stacking to remove the sporadic noise, and post-stack for smoothing. The CSEM data used consists of signals in the time domain with a 10-second period and a 50% duty cycle. The results of applying these noise removal techniques indicate that all three methods are highly effective in noise reduction. The pre-stack technique can remove periodic noise, while sporadic noise is addressed by the stacking technique, and signal smoothing can be achieved using the poststack technique.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Infrastructure development at the Sumatra Institute of Technology is growing rapidly, hence, it requires new utilities installation network such as cables and pipes to supply electricity and clean water. Installing new utility line, it is necessary to secure and know the existence and depth of the previously embedded utility network to avoid damage that could hamper the construction process or cause large losses. Accessing the sub-surface information, geophysical method, such as Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can be utilized for identifying buried utility networks, ensuring the safe installation of new utilities and preventing damage to existing embedded utilities. In this study, a GPR device with a frequency range 40 MHz-3.4 GHz comprising 5 tracks was employed. The acquired data underwent processing using GPR Insights software, generating a radargram cross-section that provides information about the subsurface. The results from the radargram reveal a hyperbolic reflection anomaly, signifying the presence of a utility network beneath the surface, suspected to be pipe and cable utilities. The utility network is detected at varying depths of 0.5 m, 0.8 m, 1 m, and 1.2 m at different distances. Furthermore, several anomalies in the form of hyperbolas are observed, suggesting potential utilities due to their continuity with other paths.

Abstract

Coal remains one of the main energy sources in Indonesia, contributing more than 40% to national energy consumption. Therefore, an effective exploration method is needed to identify subsurface coal seams. This study aims to identify the presence of coal seams using the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) method integrated with borehole logging data at PIT “SWIM”, South Palembang Sub-Basin. The study utilized four GPR survey lines and four borehole log datasets. The GPR data were acquired using a 25 MHz antenna frequency and processed through the stages of move starttime, dewow filtering, automatic gain control, bandpass Butterworth filtering, background removal, running average, and topography correction Interpretation was carried out based on reflection patterns, reflector continuity, amplitude characteristics, and correlation with gamma-ray and density logs. The results indicate five coal seam zones, namely A1, A2, B, C, and D, at depths of approximately 8–60 m. Among these, Seam B exhibits the most consistent continuity across the survey lines, while Seam D appears as a prominent deeper reflector. Strong, continuous, high-amplitude reflectors indicate significant dielectric property contrasts between the coal and the surrounding lithologies. This study demonstrates that the integration of low-frequency (25 MHz) GPR and logging data can effectively support coal seam identification and illustrates the application of electromagnetic wave propagation, reflection, attenuation, and dielectric contrast principles in subsurface exploration, making it relevant to the fields of applied physics and geophysics.

Abstract

Magnetotellurics (MT) is a passive geophysical method that relies on the principles of electromagnetic induction to delineate subsurface resistivity distributions. This study implements the Neighborhood Algorithm (NA) for one-dimensional (1D) inversion of MT data to overcome local minima traps and analysis model uncertainty. The performance of the NA is evaluated using the Rosenbrock function and synthetic MT data. The evaluation results show that the NA successfully achieves convergence with a misfit of less than 2.0 on synthetic data with 5% added Gaussian noise. Furthermore, the NA is applied to field MT data from Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii. The performance of the NA in modeling the field data is compared to a conventional approach, namely the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm. The field data modeling results demonstrate that the NA (misfit 1.99) outperforms the LM algorithm (misfit 2.52). Additionally, the NA provides supplementary information in the form of a posterior probability density that maps the model's uncertainty bounds. The resistivity model, supported by uncertainty analysis, strengthens the information at Kilauea Volcano regarding the presence of a low-resistivity (conductive) zone at a depth of less than 3 km, which is associated with a shallow magma chamber (partial melt) or saline fluids.

Abstract

The availability of clean water is a crucial issue in Jatimulyo Village, South Lampung Regency, particularly during the dry season. Residents face difficulties accessing water sources due to a limited understanding of the subsurface groundwater potential. In response to this problem, a team from the Sumatra Institute of Technology (ITERA) conducted a community service activity aimed at mapping this groundwater potential. This activity utilized the geoelectric resistivity method to identify subsurface structures and determine the locations and depths of potential aquifers for drilled wells. In its implementation, the team collaborated with the local village government and involved participants from the Geophysical Engineering and Petroleum and Gas Engineering Study Programs. In addition to technical surveys, the team also conducted a socialization of their findings and provided education on groundwater utilization. This event, attended by residents, local neighborhood (RT) heads, and village officials, highlighted the importance of proper aquifer identification, well maintenance techniques, and strategies for ensuring water resource sustainability. This initiative received positive appreciation from the village head and residents, who hope the results of the ITERA study can provide a concrete solution to address the challenges of clean water availability in their region.
