Abstract

Stunted toddlers are often not aware of it, and after two years it will be seen that the toddler is short. Chronic nutritional problems in toddlers are caused by insufficient dietary intake for quite a long time because parents or families do not know or are not aware of providing food according to their children’s nutritional needs. Based on data on the prevalence of nutritional status of children under five with indicators of height based on age (height/a) at the Central Buton Health Office. This study aimed to discover the eating culture of stunted toddlers and what causes stunting to occur in Rahia Village, Gu District, Central Buton Regency. This study uses ethnographic methods with observation participation and in-depth interviews. The results of this study indicate that the eating culture of stunting toddlers in Rahia Village, Gu District, Central Buton Regency is influenced by a lack of parental knowledge so that stunting is still difficult to overcome. The causes of stunting include the provision of MP-ASI too early, the quality of food is less nutritious, dietary restrictions for pregnant women, babies who do not receive immunizations, irregular meal schedules, low mother’s knowledge and lack of socialization regarding stunting education.

Abstract

Effective waste management is crucial for environmental sustainability. Utilizing waste through reuse and recycle techniques serves as a solution to mitigate the negative impacts of waste. This community service aims to educate students of the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Halu Oleo, on the reuse and recycle techniques as an environmentally friendly waste management approach. The service partners are students who participate in training and socialization on how to repurpose used materials into useful products. The methods used include socialization, training, and hands-on practices related to repurposing used items such as plastic bottles, paper, and cardboard into crafts. The results of the community service show that the knowledge transfer through the provided counseling and training has motivated the participants to utilize waste produced daily and scattered waste in their living environment. Through the two techniques taught, participants were able to produce various products from materials once considered waste, transforming them into functional, artistic, and even edible items. The products created included bags, tissue holders, accessories, and snacks.

Abstract

This study attempts to examine the concept of local wisdom and food security among farmers who are practicing farming rocky lands in Burangasi Village in Lapandewa District, South Buton Regency. The data collection method used was ethnographic wherein data was gathered by employing the participant observation method and in-depth interviews. Data obtained were then measured in qualitative descriptive measures. The results indicate that the farmers at Burangasi Village are not pessimistic of the constraints of their lands. Rather, they proactively take these limits as a challenge by realizing local wisdom of the ancestors. This acquired knowledge acts as a type of intangible capital and helps farmers in overcoming land-related issues and being adjusted to the natural environment around them. There are a number of land-use strategies designed to suit plant traits among them being growing on rock surfaces, rock cavities as well as in between rocks and rocky soil. Consequently, there is not a single piece of idle land. Farmers implement different adaptive measures in order to increase food security. These involve controlling planting systems with crop diversification (polyculture), specifically of staple foods; planting one crop on multiple plots; staggered and continuous harvesting systems; and preservation of harvested products by processing it into various products to lengthen the shelf life and prevent.

Abstract

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play a strategic role in empowering rural communities, particularly in regions characterized by high levels of social, economic, and environmental vulnerability. This article aims to analyze the role of Komnas Desa of Southeast Sulawesi in rural community empowerment through the perspective of integrated functionalism as proposed by Bronislaw Malinowski. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing field observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation analysis conducted through field-based academic activities. The findings reveal that Komnas Desa Southeast Sulawesi adopts a participatory approach rooted in the local socio-cultural context in implementing programs related to economic empowerment, environmental advocacy, public health, and disaster management. From the perspective of integrated functionalism, these programs function as interconnected components within the social system that collectively address the fundamental needs of rural communities. The application of functionalist and applied anthropological perspectives enables NGO interventions to become more adaptive to local conditions, socially accepted by community members, and effective in strengthening local capacities. This study highlights the importance of integrating anthropological theory into community empowerment practices as a sustainable strategy for addressing social and environmental challenges in rural areas.
