Abstract

Sleep disorders are a health problem that is often experienced by various population groups, especially the elderly, infants, as well as pregnant and post-natal women. Aromatherapy with essential oils is one of the non-pharmacological approaches that is increasingly used because it is considered safer and more acceptable. Objective: This study aims to systematically review studies in Indonesia that evaluate the effectiveness of aromatherapy using essential oils on sleep quality. Method: The literature search was conducted using the Google Scholar search engine with the help of the Publish or Perish application. Keywords related to "aromatherapy", "essential oils", and "sleep disorders" are used to find suitable articles. Inclusion criteria include studies with essential oil interventions through inhalation or massage involving the population in Indonesia and containing sleep quality data as an output. Results: Twelve articles met the inclusion criteria. Most studies used lavender oil and showed a significant improvement in sleep quality. Some studies have also evaluated essential oils from local plants such as sandalwood, lynae, jasmine, and rose, which show positive results although their numbers are still limited. The duration of the intervention varied between one day and two months. The route of administration is generally through inhalation and massage, with no reports of serious side effects. Conclusion: Aromatherapy with essential oils, including from the local flora of Indonesia, has the potential to be an effective and safe non-pharmacological alternative to improve sleep quality. Further research is needed to strengthen scientific evidence, determine the optimal duration and dosage, and develop the economic potential of local resource-based essential oils.

Abstract

Red algae (Kappaphycus alvarezii) are a marine resource containing bioactive compounds, such as flavonoids and carotenoids, with potential antioxidant properties. This study aimed to develop lozenge formulations of red algae powder using direct compression, optimize the excipient composition, and evaluate the physicochemical properties and antioxidant activity. Red algae powder was characterized microscopically and by LC–MS, confirming the presence of quercetin, rutin, kaempferol, and astaxanthin in the powder. Five lozenge formulations (F1–F5) were prepared using varying concentrations of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and starch. In-process evaluation included flow rate, angle of repose, loss on drying, and particle size distribution, while post-compression testing covered organoleptic properties, weight variation, hardness, friability, surface abrasion, and disintegration time. Antioxidant activity was determined using the DPPH radical scavenging assay, with quercetin as the standard. All formulations met the pharmacopeia standards, with hardness ranging from 74.3–111.1 N, friability 0.61–0.98%, and disintegration times 6.61–15.88 min. Optimization using a Simplex Lattice Design identified Formula 3 (3.5% HPMC and 10.5% starch) as the most desirable composition. The red algae powder and lozenge exhibited weak antioxidant activity, with IC₅₀ values of 5,969 ppm and 6,854 ppm, respectively. These findings demonstrate that lozenges containing red algae powder can be successfully produced with acceptable physical properties; however, improvement of raw material standardization or enrichment is required to enhance antioxidant efficacy.

Abstract

Wound care remains a major public health problem, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as Indonesia. Pharmacists practicing in community-based primary care settings are often the first point of contact for patients with minor wounds, yet evidence describing their wound care practices in routine care remains limited. This study aimed to describe wound care practices among pharmacists in community-based primary care settings in Indonesia and to examine factors associated with wound care product selection, product availability, and patient education. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among pharmacists practicing in community-based primary care settings in Indonesia. The study used a non-probability convenience sampling approach, with recruitment through online pharmacist communication networks and professional social media platforms. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data on respondent characteristics, factors influencing wound care product selection, product availability, and patient education practices. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data, and associations between categorical variables were analyzed using the Fisher’s Exact test. A total of 303 pharmacists were included in the analysis. The median age of respondents was 33 years (range: 23–74 years). Most respondents practiced in community pharmacies (83.5%). Across all experience groups, wound type and severity were the most commonly considered factors in wound care product selection. Other clinical considerations and product availability varied by years of practice and practice setting. Most respondents reported routinely providing patient education during wound care consultations. These findings describe variation in wound care practices among pharmacists in community-based primary care settings in Indonesia.

Abstract

The escalating global health crisis of antibiotic resistance necessitates the search for novel antibacterial agents from natural sources. This study investigated the potential of Plantago major L., a plant used in traditional medicine, as a source of antibacterial compounds. It aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of its ethanol extract and its polarity-based fractions against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Dried P. major L. leaves were extracted with ethanol using maceration. The crude extract was then fractionated using a sequential liquid-liquid extraction with hexane, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol. The antibacterial activity of the extract and all fractions was tested against S. aureus (ATCC 25923) and E. coli (ATCC 25922) using the broth microdilution method to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC). Results revealed distinct antibacterial profiles based on fraction polarity. The ethyl acetate fraction exhibited the strongest activity against S. aureus with an MIC of 0.104 mg/mL, indicating the presence of potent semi-polar compounds like flavonoids effective against gram-positive bacteria. Conversely, the n-butanol fraction was most effective against E. coli with an MIC of 3.3 mg/mL, suggesting the role of hydrophilic compounds such as saponins in disrupting the more complex gram-negative membrane. The crude ethanol extract showed lower activity, confirming the critical role of fractionation in concentrating the bioactive compounds. Plantago major L. possesses significant antibacterial potential, with its active compounds concentrated in specific polarity-based fractions. These findings validate its traditional use and support its further development as an alternative therapy in the face of growing antibiotic resistance.

Abstract

The Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa, a yellow passion fruit, is known for its distinctive aroma and tart flavor. The pulp of the yellow passion fruit can be used to make tea, jam, and syrup commercially. Commercial items are processed using oven heating, which involves prolonged exposure to high temperatures. As a result, fruit content, particularly water content, may alter. The benefit of reducing the water content is that less microbial growth medium means the product has a longer shelf life. However, fruit flesh’s nutritional composition will also change due to the ascorbic acid and phenolic compounds' thermolability and other factors. In this study, the yellow passion fruit pulp juice is heated in a controlled manner at 60°C, 70°C, and 80°C for 7 hours using an oven. The purpose is to assess changes in the amounts of ascorbic acid and total phenol that occurred. A paired T-test was used to assess the association between weight loss, ascorbic acid levels, and phenolic levels in the control and treatment groups. The amount of ascorbic acid was determined using the 2.6 dichloroindophenol titrimetry method, and the amount of phenol was determined using the Folin-Cioceltau method and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. According to this study, increasing the temperature to 60 °C or 80 °C significantly reduces weight and ascorbic acid levels. Also, the heating temperature unaffected the amount of phenol in each group.
